Non-Toxic Small Kitchen Appliances

Air fryers, coffee makers, kettles and slow cookers all put a coating, a plastic or a metal against hot food or water. These guides show which surfaces to look for, which label claims mean something, and which models we would buy.

What we check on any small appliance

Four questions that sort a safer appliance from a marketing claim.

  1. The surface that touches food

Bare stainless steel or glass has nothing to wear off. A coating (PTFE "nonstick" or ceramic) is what you are trusting.

  2. What the label actually claims

"PFOA-free", "PTFE-free" and "PFAS-free" are three different promises. Only one rules out the whole chemical family.

  3. Hot plastic and hidden parts

Water tanks, tubing, lids and sealing rings touch hot food or water too, and most reviews skip them.

  4. How you clean it

Abrasive pads and sprays shorten a coating's life. Gentle cleaning keeps the safe surface safe.
