A toaster and a toaster oven both make toast, and that is where the overlap ends. One is a fast, narrow tool that lives in a small corner of the counter. The other is a small oven that also toasts, and it asks for more room, more cleaning and more patience in the morning. This guide uses real numbers: toast times from Consumer Reports, energy figures from a US utility, lifespans, and sizes and wattages from the makers' own listings, checked in September 2026. We compared sources and listings; we did not test these appliances ourselves.
Quick answer
- Buy a toaster if you mostly make toast, bagels and frozen waffles. It is faster (about 1 to 4 minutes against 2.5 to 9), browns more evenly and takes far less counter space.
- Buy a toaster oven if you also reheat pizza, melt cheese, roast vegetables or bake small portions, and you have the counter space for it.
- Buy an air fryer toaster oven if you want toast plus crisp fries and wings from one appliance instead of two.
- Still torn? A 2-in-1 unit puts a toaster slot on top of a small oven.
What is a toaster oven? A small countertop oven with heating elements above and below the rack. It toasts, bakes, broils and reheats, and many newer ones add a fan for convection or air frying.

If you mostly make toast and bagels
Get a toaster. It is the faster tool for bread, it browns more evenly than most toaster ovens, and a 2-slice model fits in a space about the size of a large shoebox. You also get the simplest cleaning of the three: slide out the crumb tray and empty it. If your breakfasts are sliced bread, bagels, English muffins and frozen waffles, a toaster oven adds counter bulk, cleaning and waiting time for things you are not cooking.
Our toaster pick
Keenstone 2-Slice Retro Toaster (WT-330)
1.5 in wide slots for bagels and thick slices, 6 browning levels, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel buttons, and a removable crumb tray, in a body 11.6 in wide, 7.1 in deep and 7.5 in tall. The listing says the surfaces that touch your bread are 18/8 stainless steel. When we checked in September 2026 it was one of the best-reviewed 2-slice toasters on Amazon.
Worth knowing: the listing's material field also names ABS plastic, so the body is not all metal. At 825 watts it sits at the low end for a 2-slice toaster, and the warranty is 1 year.

If you reheat, melt and bake small portions
Get a toaster oven. It reheats pizza with a crisp base instead of a soft one, melts cheese on open-face toast, warms pastries and bakes a small tray of cookies or vegetables without heating a full-size oven. It still toasts, just more slowly. If you do not need air frying, a plain toaster oven is simpler to use and has one less part to clean. Our guide to reheating leftovers has toaster oven times for pizza and more.
Our plain toaster oven pick
Hamilton Beach Easy Reach 6-Slice Toaster Oven (31127)
Bake, broil and toast with simple dials, 150 to 450°F, a 30-minute timer with auto shutoff, and room for 6 slices of toast, a 12 in pizza or a 9 by 11 in pan, according to the listing. The roll-top door slides up and out of the way, and Hamilton Beach says that keeps spills and drips off it while you cook. It was one of the best-reviewed toaster ovens on Amazon when we checked in September 2026.
Worth knowing: no convection fan and no air fry setting. Because the door rolls over the top, you cannot keep anything on top of it. It is wide, listed at 18.7 in, so measure first.

If you want toast, air frying and a small footprint
Five of the ten best-sellers in Amazon's toaster oven category had an air fry setting when we checked in September 2026. The appeal is plain: one appliance does the job of a toaster oven and a basket air fryer. The catch is size, since these are usually the biggest of the three. Our pick deals with that by flipping up against the wall when you are not using it.
Our air fryer toaster oven pick
Ninja SP101 Digital Air Fry Countertop Oven
Air fry, air roast, broil, bake, toast, bagel, dehydrate and keep warm in one 1,800-watt unit. The listing says it fits up to 9 slices of toast or a 13 in pizza, preheats in about 60 seconds, and takes up 50% less space when you flip it up to stand against the backsplash between uses. It comes with an air fry basket, a sheet pan, a wire rack and a removable crumb tray, and the back panel opens for deeper cleaning. It was one of the best-selling toaster ovens on Amazon when we checked in September 2026.
Worth knowing: it is the most expensive of our four picks. For two slices of toast it is still slower than a pop-up toaster. At 1,800 watts, avoid running it on the same circuit as a kettle or microwave. Before you rely on flip-up storage, measure the gap under your wall cabinets against the oven's front-to-back size, which becomes its height when it stands up. The listing does not say what the inside walls are made of or coated with.

If you cannot decide: a toaster and toaster oven in one
A 2-in-1 puts a real toaster slot on top of a small oven. You get pop-up style toast in the morning and an oven for reheating later, in one footprint and with one plug.
Our combo pick
Hamilton Beach 2-in-1 Toaster Oven and Long Slot Toaster (31156)
A long toast slot on top takes 2 regular slices or 1 long one, with 5 shade settings. Below it is a 16.5 L oven that bakes, broils, toasts and keeps warm, fits a 9 in pizza, and has a 60-minute timer and auto shutoff. It comes with a bake pan, a rack and a slide-out crumb tray.
Worth knowing: its customer rating sits a little below the bar we normally set for our picks. We include it because no other toaster-and-oven combo we found has anywhere near its track record. The oven has no convection or air fry, the slot takes only 2 slices, and at about 12 in tall it is taller than either appliance on its own, so check the space under your cabinets.

Can a toaster oven replace a toaster?
Yes, for most households. A toaster oven makes good toast, handles thick slices and bagels without a slot limit, and lets you toast bread with toppings already on. What you give up is speed and evenness. Consumer Reports found toasters take about 1 to 4 minutes on a medium setting, while toaster ovens take about 2.5 to 9, and that toasters brown more evenly and consistently. If you toast every morning in a hurry, that gap is real. If you toast a few times a week, you will barely notice it.
So do you need a toaster if you have a toaster oven? Only if speed or evenness matters to you every day, or if the toaster oven is busy with something else at breakfast time.
How to make toast in a toaster oven
- Put the rack in the middle position and lay the bread flat on the rack, not on a pan.
- Choose the toast setting and a shade. On older dial models, set the temperature dial to its highest setting, as Oster and Sunbeam's toaster oven FAQ says.
- Watch the first few batches. Toaster ovens vary more than toasters, and the first round from a cold oven browns differently from the second.
- Turn the bread over halfway if the top browns faster than the bottom.
Toast vs bake on a toaster oven
Toast: the top and bottom elements run together at full heat to brown both sides quickly.
Bake: both elements cycle to hold the temperature you set. On Oster and Sunbeam models the top element runs at about half power.
Broil: the top element only, at the highest heat, for melting and browning tops.
Is a toaster oven worth it? Pros and cons
Worth it because
- It does toast plus reheating, melting, broiling and small bakes.
- It uses about 50 to 70% less energy than a standard oven for the same small job, according to Southern California Edison.
- It heats up faster than a full-size oven and does not warm the whole kitchen in summer.
- Leftovers come out crisp instead of soft.
Not worth it if
- You mostly want toast: it is slower and browns less evenly.
- Your counter is tight: most are wider than a toaster and about twice as deep.
- You dislike cleaning: there is a rack, a pan, a crumb tray and inside walls.
- You want it to last: American Home Shield puts toaster ovens at up to about 5 years, against 6 to 8 for toasters.
Our rule of thumb: a toaster oven is worth it if you will use it for something other than toast at least three or four times a week. Below that, the toaster is the better buy.
What about an air fryer toaster oven?
An air fryer toaster oven is a toaster oven with a stronger fan and a mesh basket. The fan moves hot air fast enough to crisp the outside of fries, wings and vegetables with little oil. A basket air fryer does the same job in a smaller space: Home Depot's guide notes that an air fryer has its fan and heating element at the top, while a convection oven has its fan at the back and at least two elements, top and bottom. So a basket air fryer crisps fast but fits one or two servings, while an air fryer toaster oven holds more and still makes toast.
Toaster oven or air fryer: which do you need?
- You want crisp food for one or two and already have a toaster: a basket air fryer is smaller. See our air fryer guide for what it does well.
- You want toast, reheating and crisp food from one appliance: an air fryer toaster oven, such as the Ninja SP101.
- You never want fried-style food: a plain toaster oven is simpler and has one less part to clean.
Can an air fryer make toast?
A basket air fryer can toast a slice or two laid flat, but most have no toast setting, so you set the time and temperature yourself and check the bread as it goes. An air fryer toaster oven is easier: models like the Ninja SP101 list dedicated toast and bagel settings with a shade control.
Toaster oven vs regular oven
A toaster oven is not the same as a regular oven, but for small amounts of food it can stand in for one. It works on the same idea, heating elements above and below the food, in a box a fraction of the size.
| Toaster oven | Regular oven | |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | One small tray; a 9 to 13 in pizza depending on the model | Full sheet pans, roasts, several racks at once |
| Heat-up time | Short; some list a preheat of about a minute | Longer, because there is far more space to heat |
| Energy for a small job | About 50 to 70% less | Baseline |
| Evenness | Food sits close to the elements, so edges can brown first | More room around the food, more even for large bakes |
| Best for | Meals for one or two, reheating, sides | Family meals, holiday cooking, batch baking |
Can a toaster oven replace an oven? For a one- or two-person household that cooks small portions, often yes. For a roast chicken for six, two trays of cookies or a sheet cake, no. Also check your counter depth: Consumer Reports says a toaster oven needs a counter at least 12 in deep if you want to cook frozen pizza in it.
Toaster oven vs convection oven
These terms overlap, which is why the question comes up so often. A convection oven is any oven with a fan that moves the hot air around the food, so it cooks faster and browns more evenly. A toaster oven can be convection or not. A convection toaster oven is a toaster oven with that fan. An air fryer toaster oven pushes the idea further with a stronger fan and a basket.
| Type | Fan | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Basic toaster oven | None | Toast, bake, broil with still heat |
| Convection toaster oven | Yes | Faster, more even roasting and baking |
| Air fryer toaster oven | Yes, stronger | Crisp, fried-style results in a basket |
| Full-size convection oven | Yes, at the back | Convection at family-meal capacity |
If you already have a convection setting on your main oven, a basic toaster oven covers the small jobs. If you do not, a convection or air fryer toaster oven gives you that fan for small portions.
Toaster oven vs microwave
They do different jobs. A microwave heats food fast from the inside and is best for soups, drinks, steaming and defrosting, but it cannot brown or crisp. A toaster oven is slower but browns, crisps and toasts, which is why reheated pizza and fries come out better in it. Many kitchens keep both. If you are replacing a microwave for other reasons, our microwave guide covers what to look for inside the cavity.
Small kitchens: space, clearance and safety
In a small kitchen the toaster usually wins by default. A 2-slice model is about 11 to 12 in wide and 7 in deep, and it is light enough to put away in a cupboard. Most toaster ovens are 13 to 20 in wide and 10 to 15 in deep, and they are heavy enough that they stay out. A toaster oven still makes sense in a small kitchen if it saves you from turning on the big oven several times a week, or if it can be stored upright like the Ninja SP101.
- Measure the spot, including depth, and check where the outlet is.
- Leave clearance. Toaster oven outsides get hot. Follow the clearance in your manual and keep the top and back clear of cabinets, curtains, paper towels and anything plastic.
- Pull a toaster forward from under wall cabinets while it runs, as Dualit's safety advice recommends for any pop-up toaster.
- Empty the crumb tray regularly in either appliance. Built-up crumbs can burn.
- Stay nearby while either one is on, and unplug it and let it cool before cleaning.
- Look for a UL, ETL or CSA mark on the appliance or in the listing, which shows a recognised lab has tested it.
What touches your food: interiors and coatings
"Stainless steel" in a toaster oven title usually describes the outside. The inside walls, trays and baskets are often coated, and listings do not always say with what. Breville's own listings for its Mini and Compact Smart Ovens, for example, say the inside walls have a nonstick coating for easy cleaning. The Ninja SP101 and Hamilton Beach listings we read do not say what their inside walls are made of or coated with. On the toaster side, the Keenstone listing says the parts that touch your bread are 18/8 stainless steel, while its material field also names ABS plastic in the body.
If coatings are the thing you care about most, we compared toaster ovens on exactly that in our guide to the air fryer toaster ovens we would choose on materials.
Energy use and running cost
For toast alone, a toaster is the lean choice: about 800 to 925 watts for a 2-slice model, running for a few minutes. A toaster oven draws more, about 1,300 to 1,800 watts in current listings, and runs longer to toast. Where a toaster oven saves energy is against the full-size oven: Southern California Edison says toaster ovens use about 50 to 70% less energy than a standard oven, and that most air fryers draw about 1,500 watts, about half the energy of a conventional oven. So the saving comes from what you stop doing in the big oven, not from toast.
For more ways to cut kitchen power use, see our tips for reducing electricity use.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying for the cooking you might do. A toaster oven you use only for toast is a slower, bigger toaster.
- Measuring only the width. Toaster ovens are deep and need clearance on top and behind.
- Forgetting the circuit. An 1,800-watt oven and a kettle on one circuit can trip the breaker.
- Ignoring the inside. Read what the listing says about the cavity, trays and basket, not just the outside finish.
- Expecting toaster-quality toast from any toaster oven. It varies by model, so check reviews for comments on even toasting.
Final verdict
If your mornings are about bread, buy a toaster. It is faster, more even, smaller, easier to clean and it lasts longer. The Keenstone 2-Slice is where we would start. If you also reheat, melt and cook small portions several times a week, buy a toaster oven, and if you would otherwise buy an air fryer too, make it an air fryer toaster oven like the Ninja SP101. For more toaster options, see the toasters we picked for 2026 and how to choose a toaster.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a toaster and a toaster oven?
A toaster holds bread upright in slots between heating elements and only toasts. A toaster oven is a small countertop oven with a door, a rack and elements above and below, so it toasts, bakes, broils and reheats. Toasters are faster and more even for bread; toaster ovens do more.
Can you make toast in a toaster oven?
Yes. Lay the bread on the middle rack and use the toast setting. Consumer Reports found it takes about 2.5 to 9 minutes, against 1 to 4 in a toaster, and browning is usually less even.
Is a toaster oven the same as an oven?
It works the same way on a smaller scale. It suits small portions and reheating, uses less energy for those jobs, and cannot fit full sheet pans, roasts or several trays at once.
Is it better to get a toaster or a toaster oven?
A toaster is better if you mostly make toast and have little counter space. A toaster oven is better if you will also reheat, melt or bake small portions several times a week.
What are the disadvantages of a toaster oven?
Slower and less even toast, a bigger footprint, more parts to clean, hot outside surfaces that need clearance, and a shorter typical lifespan than a toaster.
How long do toaster ovens last?
American Home Shield puts toaster ovens at up to about 5 years and toasters at about 6 to 8. Emptying the crumb tray and cleaning spills before they bake on both help.
Does a toaster oven use less electricity than an oven?
Yes, for small jobs. Southern California Edison says toaster ovens use about 50 to 70% less energy than a standard oven. For toast alone, a toaster uses less than either.
Can an air fryer toast bread?
A basket air fryer can toast a slice or two laid flat, but most have no toast setting, so you set the time yourself and check it. An air fryer toaster oven usually has a proper toast setting and fits more slices.
