Most toasters look alike in a product photo, and most of them will make an ordinary slice of sandwich bread brown. The differences show up a week later: the bagel that will not go in, the sourdough slice that pokes out of the top and stays pale, the 4-slice model that eats half your counter, the crumb tray you cannot reach. Below are the 7 things we check before recommending a toaster, with slot sizes, dimensions and wattages taken from the makers' own listings in September 2026, plus what a Prop 65 label on a toaster really tells you.
Quick answer
- 1 or 2 people: a 2-slice toaster with 1.5 in wide slots covers sandwich bread, bagels and thick slices.
- Families or back-to-back breakfasts: a 4-slice toaster. Side-by-side models give you two separate controls; long-slot models fit sourdough and take less depth.
- Check the bread you actually buy: slot width for bagels and thick slices, slot length for artisan loaves, slot depth for tall sandwich bread.
- Worth paying for: even browning, a removable crumb tray, a cancel button, and bagel and defrost settings if you use them. Not worth paying extra for: a long list of presets you will never press.
- Before you buy: read the listing's material field, not just the title, and look for a UL, ETL or CSA safety mark.

If you want one toaster that fits most kitchens
Keenstone 2-Slice Retro Toaster
1.5 in wide slots for bagels and thick bread, 6 browning levels, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel, and a removable crumb tray. The listing says the parts that touch your bread are 18/8 stainless steel, and when we checked in September 2026 it was one of the best-reviewed 2-slice toasters on Amazon.
The 7 things to check before you buy a toaster
Work down this list in order. The first three decide which toasters are even candidates for your kitchen; the last four separate a good one from a frustrating one. Each point has its own section further down.
| What to check | What to look for | A pick that fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Slices and layout | 2-slice for 1 or 2 people. 4-slice for families. Long slots if you want 4 slices in a narrow strip of counter. | Mecity 4-Slice |
| 2. Slot width, length, depth | About 1.5 in wide for bagels and thick slices. 10 in long slots for sourdough. Enough depth for tall sandwich loaves. | BUYDEEM DT620 |
| 3. Size and footprint | Most 2-slice models are about 11 to 12 in wide and 7 in deep. Measure the spot, including room to pull it away from wall cabinets. | Keenstone 2-Slice |
| 4. Even browning and wattage | About 800 to 925 watts is normal for 2 slices, 1,300 to 1,650 for 4. Evenness across back-to-back batches matters more than the number. | See the wattage section |
| 5. Features that earn their place | Cancel, removable crumb tray, high-lift lever. Bagel, defrost and reheat if you use them. A countdown timer if you like to see time left. | Mecity 2-Slice Touch |
| 6. Materials and safety | The listing's material field, a UL, ETL or CSA mark, auto shut-off, and what a Prop 65 warning does and does not tell you. | See the materials section |
| 7. Warranty and lifespan | An average toaster lasts about 6 to 8 years. Many carry a 1-year limited warranty, so check the length before you pay more for one. | See the FAQ |

Types of toasters
"Toaster" covers more shapes than it used to. Choosing the type first narrows a list of hundreds to a handful. The main types compare like this, with the one thing to watch for on each.
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 2-slice, standard slots | Sandwich bread, 1 or 2 people, the smallest budget | Narrower slots on the cheapest models; bagel halves may not fit |
|
2-slice, extra-wide slots Example: BUYDEEM DT620 |
Bagels, English muffins, thick or homemade slices | "Wide" is not a standard size; check the listed width in inches |
|
4-slice, side by side Example: Mecity 4-Slice |
Families; two people who like different shades (two control panels) | Deeper footprint, about 10 in front to back |
|
4-slice, long slots Example: Elite Gourmet long slot |
Sourdough and artisan loaves, or 4 regular slices on a shallow counter | The widest footprint; toasts most evenly with two slices per slot |
| 2-slice, one long slot (slim) | Narrow counters, long bread, one person | Two short slices share one slot, so they sit end to end |
|
Touchscreen or countdown ("smart") Example: Mecity 2-Slice Touch |
Seeing time left; presets for bagels, waffles or gluten-free bread | More electronics than a lever and dial; presets you may not use |
|
Retro or design-led Example: Keenstone 2-Slice |
A toaster that lives on show, matching a kettle or a kitchen style | Paying for the look; check slot width and features the same way |
|
Toaster oven Compare the two |
Open-face toast, reheating, small bakes | Slower toast, a bigger footprint, more cleaning |
You will also see conveyor toasters, which feed bread through on a moving belt. They are built for cafes and hotel breakfast bars, not home kitchens, so we leave them out here.
2-slice vs 4-slice: which fits your household
This is the decision that changes the most about living with a toaster, because it sets both how fast breakfast comes out and how much counter the toaster takes.
| Option | Choose it if | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| 2-slice | You are 1 or 2 people, your kitchen is small, or you toast a few times a week. Smallest footprint, easy to store. | Slow for a family: 4 slices means two rounds. |
| 4-slice, side by side | You toast for a family, or two people like different shades. Two independent sides, so you can run just one. | Deep and heavy, and it draws the most power. |
| 4-slice, long slots | You toast for a family and also buy long or artisan loaves. Fits long slices a side-by-side model cannot. | The widest shape, with one control for everything. |
Who should choose a 2-slice toaster
If you live alone or with one other person, or toast a few times a week, a 2-slice toaster is enough. You keep more counter free, and a 2-slice model is light enough to put away in a cupboard if you prefer a clear counter.
Who should choose a 4-slice toaster
If three or more people eat breakfast at the same time, or you regularly run two rounds back to back, a 4-slice toaster pays for its space. Then choose the shape. Side-by-side models are two 2-slice toasters in one body, usually with a control panel for each side, so one person can have light toast and another dark. Long-slot models have two long slots that each take two regular slices end to end, or one long slice of sourdough.
If you want 4 slices with two separate sides
Mecity 4-Slice Touch Screen Toaster (T-88A)
Four wide slots with two control panels, so each pair of slots has its own shade and setting, and you can run one side alone on a quiet morning. The listing gives 6 browning levels, a defrost mode and bread-type presets, in a stainless steel body 11.2 in wide, 10.4 in deep and 7.1 in tall.
Worth knowing: at 1,650 watts it draws the most power of our picks, so running it at the same time as a kettle or microwave on the same circuit can trip the breaker. It has far fewer customer reviews than our other picks, so it has a shorter track record, and it costs the most of the five. The touchscreens add electronics a lever-and-dial toaster does not have.

If you want 4 slices and room for long bread
Elite Gourmet 4-Slice Long Slot Toaster (ECT-3100)
Two long slots, each listed at 10 in by 1.5 in, that take a full sourdough slice, two bagel halves or two regular slices each. It has 6 browning settings plus reheat, defrost and cancel, and it measures 14.7 in wide but only 7.1 in deep, so it suits a shallow counter. It was one of the best-selling toasters on Amazon when we checked in September 2026.
Worth knowing: its customer rating sits a little below the bar we normally set for our picks. We include it because no other long-slot 4-slice toaster we found has anywhere near its track record. The listing itself says to toast two slices per slot, facing each other, for even heat, so a single slice toasts less evenly. It is the widest of our picks.
See the Elite Gourmet on AmazonAs an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
When bigger is not better: a 4-slice toaster you fill twice a week is a 2-slice toaster that takes twice the counter. If the extra capacity is for guests a few times a year, two rounds in a 2-slice model is the cheaper trade.
Slot width, length and depth: will your bread fit?
Slice count gets the attention, but bread fit decides whether you like the toaster every morning. A slot has three measurements, and each one matters for a different kind of bread.
Width (seen from above)
1.25 in (Elite Gourmet ECT1027B)
1.5 in (Keenstone, BUYDEEM, Mecity)
1.6 in (Mueller UltraToast)
Matters for bagels, English muffins, Texas toast and hand-cut slices.
Length (seen from above)
Standard slot: one sandwich slice
Long slot: 10 in (Elite Gourmet ECT-3100)
Matters for sourdough, bakery loaves and oval artisan slices.
Depth (seen from the side)
4.3 in deep (BUYDEEM DT620). The part of a slice above the slot stays pale.
Matters for tall sandwich loaves and large bakery slices.
Slot sizes are the makers' own figures from their Amazon listings, checked September 2026.
Match the slot to the bread you buy
| If you mostly toast | Check this first | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged sandwich bread | Depth, if your loaf is tall | Almost any 2-slice toaster |
| Bagels | Width | About 1.5 in slots and a bagel setting that heats the cut side |
| Thick-cut, Texas toast, homemade | Width | A slot clearly wider than your thickest slice |
| Sourdough and artisan loaves | Length, then width | Long slots, or a 4-slice long-slot model |
| Frozen waffles and English muffins | Width | Wide slots plus a defrost setting |
| Small gluten-free slices | Browning control and lift | Fine shade settings and a high-lift lever to reach short slices |
The quickest check is a ruler. Measure the thickest slice you buy and the longest one, then compare them with the slot width and length on the listing. If the slice is about as thick as the slot, it will be squeezed against the heating elements and can jam or scorch.
If your bread is thick, tall or both
BUYDEEM DT620 2-Slice Toaster
One of the few listings that gives all the slot numbers: 1.5 in wide and 4.3 in deep, which BUYDEEM says fits thick bread, bagels, English muffins and sourdough. It has 7 shade settings, separate bagel, muffin, defrost and reheat functions, a front crumb tray and cord storage underneath, in a stainless steel body 11.2 in wide. When we checked in September 2026 it was among the best-reviewed 2-slice toasters on Amazon.
Worth knowing: BUYDEEM is a smaller brand than the names at the top of the best-seller list, it is less widely sold than our lead pick, and the spec table does not state a warranty length, so check that before you buy.

Toaster sizes and dimensions
There is no official standard size, but current models fall into clear groups. These are the makers' listed dimensions for our picks, checked in September 2026, so you can compare them with the space you have.
| Model | Type | Width x depth x height |
|---|---|---|
| Keenstone WT-330 | 2-slice | 11.6 x 7.1 x 7.5 in |
| BUYDEEM DT620 | 2-slice | 11.2 x 7.3 x 7.6 in |
| Mecity T-68A | 2-slice, narrow and deep | 6.1 x 10.2 x 7.1 in |
| Mecity T-88A | 4-slice, side by side | 11.2 x 10.4 x 7.1 in |
| Elite Gourmet ECT-3100 | 4-slice, long slots | 14.7 x 7.1 x 7.7 in |
How big is a toaster, in plain terms
A typical 2-slice toaster is about 11 to 12 in wide, 7 in deep and 7.5 in tall, roughly the size of a large shoebox. A 4-slice toaster either grows deeper (side-by-side, about 10 in) or wider (long slots, about 15 in). Almost all of them stand 7 to 8 in tall, so height only matters if the toaster has to slide under a wall cabinet to be stored.
Small kitchens and limited counter space
Measure the spot before you shop, and leave room around it. Dualit's safety advice, which applies to any pop-up toaster, is to keep a toaster in a ventilated spot and pull it forward, away from cupboards, while it runs. If your counter is shallow, a long-slot model is kinder than a side-by-side 4-slice. If it is narrow, a slim model with slots front to back, like the Mecity T-68A at 6.1 in wide, takes the least width. Check where the outlet is too, because a short cord decides where the toaster can live.
Even browning and wattage
Wattage is the number buyers ask about most and the one that tells you least. It shows how much power the elements draw, which affects how fast the toaster heats up, but evenness comes from how the elements are spaced and how well the bread sits between them.
For a sense of the range, here is what the current best-sellers list: Ovente 2-slice 700 W, Keenstone and Mecity 2-slice 825 W, GE 2-slice 850 W, Amazon Basics and BUYDEEM 2-slice 900 W, Elite Gourmet long-slot 4-slice 1,300 W, and Mecity 4-slice 1,650 W. So a realistic range is about 800 to 925 watts for 2 slices and 1,300 to 1,650 watts for 4. A 2-slice model well under 800 watts may be slower; well over 1,000 is unusual and does not guarantee better toast.
A toaster is still quick whatever its wattage. Consumer Reports says toasters take about 1 to 4 minutes, compared with 2.5 to 9 minutes in a toaster oven, and that toasters generally brown more evenly. When Consumer Reports tests toasters, it also checks whether the second and third batches come out like the first, because a toaster that runs hotter on each round will burn the last slices. That is worth looking for in reviews if you toast several rounds in a row.
Practical takeaway: do not choose on wattage. Choose on bread fit and capacity, then read reviews for comments about even browning and about the second batch.
Toaster features that actually matter (and the ones that don't)
Browning control
The one control you use every day. 6 or 7 levels is plenty; more steps do not make toast more even.
Removable crumb tray
Crumbs that build up can burn. A tray that slides out from the front is easier to empty than one underneath.
Cancel button
Stops a cycle at once when toast is darker than you want, without unplugging.
High-lift lever
Raises short items like English muffins high enough to grab, so no one reaches in with a knife.
Bagel, defrost and reheat
Bagel heats the cut side more than the crust. Defrost adds time for frozen bread. Reheat warms without browning further. Useful only if you eat these.
Countdown timer
Shows how long is left. Nice rather than necessary, and the main reason people pick a touchscreen model.
Features that matter less than they look
- Long lists of bread presets. A browning dial and a bagel button cover most mornings. Presets for six bread types help only if you really toast six bread types.
- Design over fit. A toaster on show should look good, but a beautiful toaster with narrow slots is still a toaster with narrow slots.
- Extra wattage. Covered above: it does not buy evenness.
If you want to see exactly how long is left
Mecity 2-Slice Touch Screen Toaster (T-68A)
A 4.4 in touchscreen shows a countdown and lets you pick 6 browning levels plus bread types, with 1.5 in wide slots, defrost and reheat, and a removable crumb tray. It is 6.1 in wide, the narrowest of our picks. It was one of the most popular touchscreen toasters on Amazon when we checked in September 2026.
Worth knowing: the touchscreen adds electronics that a simple lever-and-dial toaster does not have. The listing's material field names ABS plastic as well as stainless steel. It is deeper (10.2 in) than it is wide, so measure your counter depth.
See the Mecity 2-Slice on AmazonAs an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Materials and safety: what to check on the listing
A toaster is a box of hot wires with bread in the middle, so two questions are worth a minute of your time: what the toaster is made of, and whether it has been safety-tested.
Read the material field, not just the title
"Stainless steel" in a product title usually describes the outside of the toaster. The material field in the listing's details tells you more. The Keenstone listing, for example, says 18/8 food-grade steel is used "on every surface that touches your bread", while its material field also names ABS plastic. The Mecity T-68A lists ABS plastic and stainless steel. That is normal for toasters, since plastic is used for end panels, buttons and bases. If you want as little plastic as possible near the heat, choose a model whose material field lists only metal, and look for how the maker describes the parts around the slots.
New toasters often smell hot on their first few uses. Elite Gourmet's listing advises running one empty cycle before first use to clear manufacturing residue. Do that with a window open, before any bread goes in.
What a Prop 65 warning on a toaster means
Some toasters sold in the US carry a California Proposition 65 warning. According to California's official Prop 65 site, a business that gives this warning "is aware of or believes that it is exposing individuals to one or more listed chemicals", and the warning "does not mean that a product or place violates safety or health standards." So a warning tells you the seller decided to warn; it does not tell you how much of which chemical is involved. A listing with no warning is not a lab result either. If this matters to you, ask the seller which chemical the warning refers to and which part of the toaster it comes from. We compared how much our toaster picks' listings disclose in our roundup of the toasters we would buy this year.
Safety marks and features
- A certification mark. The US safety standard for household toasters is UL 1026, which covers electric household cooking appliances. Look for a UL, ETL or CSA mark on the toaster or in the listing, which shows a recognised lab has tested it to that kind of standard.
- Auto shut-off. On models that have it, the toaster switches off if the bread or the carriage gets stuck.
- Cool-touch outside. Worth having if children are around the counter.
- Recalls. If you are buying an older or second-hand model, search the model number on cpsc.gov first.
Everyday toaster safety
Dualit's advice, which applies to any pop-up toaster:
- Stay nearby while it runs, and unplug it when it is not in use.
- Empty the crumb tray regularly, because built-up crumbs are a fire risk.
- Never put a knife or any metal into the slots.
- Sugary or jam-filled pastries can catch fire.
- Keep towels and curtains away, and pull the toaster out from under wall cabinets while you use it.
- Unplug it and let it cool before cleaning. Never put it in water.
Toaster or toaster oven?
If you mostly want toast and bagels, a toaster does that faster and more evenly in less space. A toaster oven earns its space if you also want to reheat leftovers, melt cheese on open-face toast or bake small batches. Our guide to reheating leftovers has toaster oven times for pizza and more.
| If you mostly need | Toaster | Toaster oven |
|---|---|---|
| Fast toast | About 1 to 4 minutes | About 2.5 to 9 minutes |
| Even browning | Usually better | Can leave stripes |
| Small footprint | Yes | Usually larger |
| Reheating, melting, small bakes | No | Yes |
| Typical lifespan | About 6 to 8 years | Up to about 5 years |
Times from Consumer Reports; lifespans from American Home Shield.

Common mistakes when buying a toaster
- Trusting the word "wide". It is not a standard size. Look for the width in inches.
- Forgetting slot length and depth. Width solves bagels; it does not solve a long sourdough slice or a tall sandwich loaf.
- Buying 4 slices for occasional guests. You live with the footprint every day.
- Choosing on wattage. It says little about evenness.
- Paying for presets you will not use. Cancel, a crumb tray and good browning control matter more.
- Skipping the material field and the safety mark. Both take a minute to check on the listing.
Toaster buying checklist
- How many people toast at the same time most mornings?
- What is the thickest and the longest slice you buy, in inches?
- Does the listed slot width, length and depth fit those slices?
- Will the listed width and depth fit your spot, with room to pull it out from under cabinets?
- Does it have cancel, a removable crumb tray and a high-lift lever?
- Do you need bagel, defrost or reheat, or are you paying for them unused?
- What does the material field say, and is there a UL, ETL or CSA mark?
- How long is the warranty?
The bottom line
Start with how many people you toast for, then measure your bread and your counter. Those three answers rule out most of the toasters on sale. Among what is left, choose even browning, a crumb tray you can reach and a cancel button over extra presets and extra watts, and take a minute to read the material field and look for a safety mark. For most kitchens of one to three people, a 2-slice toaster with 1.5 in slots is the right answer, and the Keenstone 2-Slice is where we would start. If you want to compare a few specific models side by side, see the toasters we picked for 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What should I look for when buying a toaster?
Seven things, in this order: number of slices and layout, slot width, length and depth, size against your counter, even browning, the everyday features (cancel, crumb tray, high-lift lever), materials and a safety mark, and the warranty.
Is a 2-slice or 4-slice toaster better?
A 2-slice toaster suits one or two people and small kitchens. A 4-slice toaster suits families or anyone who toasts several rounds at once. Side-by-side 4-slice models let two people choose different shades; long-slot models fit sourdough and take less depth.
Are wide-slot toasters worth it?
Yes, if you toast bagels, English muffins or thick slices. Many current models list 1.5 in slots, which covers most of those. If you only toast packaged sandwich bread, slot width matters less than depth.
How many watts should a toaster have?
About 800 to 925 watts is typical for a 2-slice toaster and 1,300 to 1,650 watts for a 4-slice, based on current best-selling models. Higher wattage heats faster but does not make browning more even.
How long should a toaster last?
American Home Shield puts the average toaster lifespan at six to eight years. Emptying the crumb tray, unplugging after use and never using metal in the slots all help it last. Many toasters carry a 1-year limited warranty, so check the warranty length when comparing models.
How much should I spend on a toaster?
Price does not track toast quality closely. The top-rated models we found for this guide were not the most expensive ones, and several premium designer toasters rated lower. Spending more usually buys looks, materials, a touchscreen or a longer warranty. Decide which of those you want, and check current prices on the listings.
Are there toasters not made in China?
A few. Dualit, for example, says its Classic toasters are hand built in the UK. For any model, check the country of origin in the listing's product details or ask the seller before you buy.
When should I buy a toaster oven instead?
When you want to reheat, melt, crisp or bake as well as toast, and you have the counter space. If you mainly want fast toast and bagels, a toaster is quicker, more even and smaller.
