Want a blender with no plastic touching your smoothie? A glass or stainless steel jar gets you most of the way, but the seal and lid touch your food too. Here is what each maker says, part by part.

Hamilton Beach Power Elite blender with a 40 ounce glass jar and stainless steel blades

Our quick pick

Hamilton Beach Power Elite Blender with 40 oz. Glass Jar

Glass jar, stainless steel blades, and Amazon's Best Seller badge when we checked on October 15. Hamilton Beach says the jar is thermal-shock tested.

The drawback: the gasket is fixed to the blade assembly, and the warranty “does not cover glass”.

The short answer

• Glass jar: the biggest surface your food touches is glass. The seal under the blades and the lid are usually other materials, and most makers do not say which.

• Stainless steel jar: the same seal-and-lid story, and you cannot see the blend. When we checked on October 15, 2026, we found no stainless-jar blender at an everyday price that passed our checks.

• BPA-free plastic (often Tritan): still plastic. “BPA-free” tells you one chemical was left out, not what the jar is made of.

How we chose: Amazon's best sellers and top results for glass, stainless steel and immersion blenders, checked against each maker's manual and product pages on October 15, 2026. We have not tested these blenders.

Which Parts of a Blender Touch Your Food?

Five parts touch what you blend: the jar, the blade assembly, the seal between them (a gasket or sealing ring), the lid with its filler cap, and on some models a tamper. Choosing glass or stainless steel only changes the first one. The collar that holds the blades to the jar sits next to the seal, so we list it too. Makers name the jar and blade material; few name the rest.

Part What the makers say Not stated
Jar Hamilton Beach: glass, “thermal-shock tested to withstand extreme temperature changes”. Oster: glass (Boroclass on the Pro 1200). Vitamix: stainless steel. —
Blades Hamilton Beach's listing: “stainless steel Ice Sabre blades”. Oster: “4-point stainless steel blade”. Vitamix: “Laser-cut from hardened stainless steel”. —
Seal Hamilton Beach: “The gasket is permanently affixed to the cutting blades.” Oster uses a separate sealing ring. What either seal is made of
Lid Oster, answering a question about the Pro 1200: “the jar cover for this blender is BPA-free”. Vitamix: “Tritan™ lid”. Lid material for Hamilton Beach and both Oster picks
Collar or jar base Hamilton Beach lists the collar as its own replacement part. Material, for every maker

Hamilton Beach is the only maker here whose per-model chemical list we found (October 15, 2026). Its page for California's AB 1200 law says it covers “cookware surfaces and handles”. For model 58148 it lists three entries: chromium, iron, and nickel (metallic and alloys). Nickel's entry names Proposition 65 among the lists that reference it. The page does not say which parts of the blender the list covers.

One more thing on the Hamilton Beach seal: because the gasket is part of the blade assembly, the manual says “Do not try to remove it.” Hamilton Beach lists a replacement cutter assembly rather than a separate gasket.

Glass vs Stainless Steel vs Plastic Blender Jars

Glass lets you see the blend, and it was the budget way we found to avoid a plastic jar. Stainless steel has no glass to break but hides the blend. Many blenders ship with plastic jars. Here is how the first two compare.

Glass jar Stainless steel jar

Heat Hamilton Beach: thermal-shock tested. Oster's listing: “Boroclass glass jar withstands thermal shock” Vitamix: “Blend hot, cold, acidic, and more.”
If it breaks Hamilton Beach's warranty: “This warranty does not cover glass” No glass to break

If you want glass, start with the Hamilton Beach quick pick. The two Oster picks below come with what Oster calls an all-metal drive, the part where the jar meets the motor.

Oster Classic Series 8-speed blender with a 6-cup glass jar

A second glass pick

Oster Classic Series 8-Speed Blender with 6-Cup Glass Jar

A 6-cup glass jar, a “4-point stainless steel blade” and what Oster calls a “Duralast™ all metal drive”.

Good for: a bigger glass jar than the Hamilton Beach, for family-size smoothies

The drawback: the listing says “Base Material: Plastic”, no manual is attached to it, and Oster's own site showed it out of stock on October 15 (Amazon had it).

Oster Pro 1200 blender with a 6-cup Boroclass glass jar and a smoothie cup

Our premium glass pick

Oster Pro 1200 Blender with 6-Cup Boroclass Glass Jar

Oster's Boroclass glass jar, which the listing says “withstands thermal shock”, and an “Oster 10 year Duralast all metal drive limited warranty”. Oster says the jar cover is BPA-free.

Good for: anyone who wants Oster's Boroclass jar and a 10-year drive warranty

The drawback: the 24-ounce smoothie cup in the box is plastic, and Oster's instructions say “Do not blend boiling liquids.” It also costs more than our other glass picks.

“BPA-free” is not “plastic-free”

A BPA-free label names one chemical the jar is made without, not the material itself. Vitamix's stainless container page lists a “Tritan™ lid”, and KitchenAid's hand blender comes with a “BPA-free Blending jar with lid”. For BPA itself, the FDA says “BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods” (page current as of April 20, 2023).

Read the whole listing. On October 15, the Amazon listing for one popular glass blender (not one of our picks) had “BPA Free” in its Material Type Free field and also carried a California Proposition 65 warning that reads: “This product can expose you to chemicals including styrene which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and bisphenol A (BPA) which is known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.” We draw no conclusion about that product. The listing did not say which part of the blender the warning refers to. For how the plastic codes differ, see our guide to plastic grades for food storage, and the same glass-or-plastic question for leftovers is in glass vs plastic food storage containers.

Stainless Steel Blenders: What We Could and Could Not Find

Amazon's top stainless steel blenders on October 15 were either models with little buying history or commercial blenders priced well above our glass picks. The stainless option with real buying history is a container for blenders you may already own: Vitamix's 48-ounce stainless jar. Vitamix says “The Stainless Steel Container works with all full-size Vitamix blenders.”

Vitamix 48 ounce stainless steel blender container with a clear lid

For Vitamix owners

Vitamix 48 oz. Stainless Steel Blender Container

A stainless jar with laser-cut stainless blades, a clear lid and a low-profile tamper. The listing calls it a “non-reactive stainless-steel blending container”.

Good for: swapping a plastic Vitamix jar for steel without buying a new blender

The drawback: it needs a full-size Vitamix base, and the lid is plastic. Vitamix's own page lists “Material: Stainless steel container, Tritan™ lid” in its specs but elsewhere says “The container and lid are dishwasher-safe and made of BPA-free Eastman Tritan™.” On October 15 it was sold by a third-party seller and shipped by Amazon.

Stainless steel immersion blenders

A hand blender lets you blend hot soup right in your own pot, so no blender jar is involved. The KitchenAid KHBV53 has an 8-inch blending arm with a “4-point stainless steel blade” and a pan guard.

Our immersion pick

KitchenAid Variable Speed Corded Hand Blender KHBV53

An 8-inch blending arm, variable speed and a 3-cup jar with a lid.

Good for: soups and sauces blended right in the pot

The drawback: the jar in the box is plastic (“3 cup (700 ml) BPA-free Blending jar with lid”), and the care rules disagree. The Amazon listing says “(1) Dishwasher-safe Blender Arm”, but KitchenAid's manual says “Wash Blending arm in hot, soapy water.” When they disagree, go by the manual.

Can You Blend Hot Soup in a Glass Blender?

The makers allow hot blends within limits, and the limits differ. These are their own rules.

Maker Hot-liquid rule Also
Hamilton Beach “Do not fill blender jar beyond the 3-cup (710-ml) level.” “Hot liquids may push lid off jar during blending.”
Oster “Do not blend boiling liquids.” —
Vitamix “Please use oven mitts for hot blends.” —
KitchenAid hand blender Use a tall container or small batches Comes with a pan guard

Caring for glass and stainless jars

Hamilton Beach's manual says not to use the dishwasher's SANI setting and not to store food in the jar. Oster wants the sealing ring in the bottom basket of the dishwasher, and Vitamix says “DO NOT attempt to remove the retainer nut or blade assembly from the container.” Daily and deep cleaning steps are in our guide to cleaning a blender properly.

How We Chose

We started from Amazon's best sellers and top results for glass blender, glass jar blender, stainless steel blender and stainless steel immersion blender, kept models shipped by Amazon, and read every manual attached to the listings. Two listings carried the wrong document: a hand blender we looked at linked a diaper pail warranty, and the KitchenAid listing's user manual is for the cordless model, so we used the corded KHBV53 guide. The Hamilton Beach and Oster Classic have lower star ratings than we usually ask for; we kept the Hamilton Beach because it carried Amazon's Best Seller badge in our “glass blender” search on October 15, 2026, and the Oster Classic as a second glass option. We found no personal-size glass blender that passed our checks. Two picks, the Oster Pro 1200 and the Vitamix container, cost more than the rest and are listed as premium options. For blender types, sizes and power, see our guide to choosing the right blender.

Questions People Ask

Is there a completely plastic-free blender?

Not among the best sellers we checked. Even glass and stainless jars sit on a seal, and no maker we checked names a lid that is not plastic: Vitamix's lid is Tritan, Oster says only that the Pro 1200 jar cover is BPA-free, and Hamilton Beach does not name its lid material. If plastic is your main worry, a glass or steel jar takes plastic out of the largest part your food touches.

Why doesn't Vitamix make a glass jar?

We found no explanation on the Vitamix pages we read. When we searched vitamix.com on October 15, 2026, we found no glass container. If you own a full-size Vitamix and want to avoid a plastic jar, Vitamix sells the stainless steel container.

Can a glass blender jar crack?

Two of our three glass picks carry a thermal-shock claim: Hamilton Beach calls its jar thermal-shock tested, and Oster's listing says the Pro 1200's Boroclass jar “withstands thermal shock”. We found no such claim for the Oster Classic. Glass can still chip. Hamilton Beach's manual says “Do not use a broken, chipped, or cracked blender jar.” Its warranty “does not cover glass”.

Can I buy just a glass or steel jar for my blender?

Sometimes. Hamilton Beach sells a 40-ounce glass replacement jar for the Power Elite (model 58148), and Vitamix's stainless container fits all its full-size blenders. Check the model number first: jars, blades and collars are made for specific models.

Is a glass blender better than a BPA-free plastic one?

It depends on what you want to avoid. Glass takes plastic out of the jar, the largest part your food touches, and Hamilton Beach and Oster sell the Power Elite and Pro 1200 jars as thermal-shock resistant. Neither changes the seal or the lid, which are separate parts.

Glass or stainless steel: which is better?

Glass lets you watch the blend and costs less; at an everyday price it was the only way we found, on October 15, to skip a plastic jar. Stainless steel has no glass to break, and Vitamix says its container handles hot and acidic blends, but the stainless option we picked costs more and needs a full-size Vitamix base.
