Anyone who has beaten egg whites or cookie dough by hand knows why these sell. The part of a hand mixer that touches the food is the beater, and most listings say very little about it, so we read the manuals. Below are four of Amazon's five best-selling electric hand mixers, what each maker says the beaters are made of, and where the listing and the manual disagree.

Our quick pick
Hamilton Beach 6-Speed Hand Mixer with QuickBurst and Bowl Rest
Amazon's #1 best seller in Hand Mixers on October 23, 2026, with more than 67,000 ratings. Six speeds, two beaters and a whisk that live in a snap-on case. Hamilton Beach's manual says the attachments can go in the dishwasher, top rack only.
See the Hamilton Beach mixer on AmazonThe drawback: some buyers report it failing after about a year, according to Amazon's review summary, and Hamilton Beach doesn't say what metal the beaters are.
Pick another one if: you want beaters the maker calls stainless steel (get the KitchenAid), or you need dough hooks (get the Hamilton Beach Easy Clean).
The Short Answer
Buy the Hamilton Beach 6-Speed unless the beater metal matters to you. If it does, the KitchenAid KHM512 is the stainless steel hand mixer of the group: its guide is the only one of the four that names the metal.
How we put this together: we did not mix anything with these mixers. On October 23, 2026 we read Amazon's Hand Mixers best-seller list and each pick's listing, the Use and Care guides for the Hamilton Beach, KitchenAid and OVENTE models, and the review pages that rank for this search. Where a maker says nothing, we say that too. Cupindy is not affiliated with any brand here.
Best Hand Mixer: 4 Picks at a Glance
Ratings and ranks were read on Amazon on October 23, 2026. “Beaters, per the maker” means the maker's own guide or, for the Easy Clean, which has no guide we could find, Hamilton Beach's text on its listing.

Hamilton Beach 6-Speed: The Best-Seller
This is the hand mixer Amazon shoppers buy most. It was #1 in Hand Mixers when we checked, with 10,000+ bought in the past month and more ratings than our other three picks combined. It handles whipped cream, cake batter, mashed potatoes and chocolate chip cookie dough.
The Bowl Rest lets you set the mixer on the rim of the bowl between steps, so the beaters don't drip on the counter. Hamilton Beach's guide says to switch it off first and not to rest it on small or plastic bowls. It also comes with a snap-on case, so the whisk doesn't disappear into a drawer.
The listing and the manual don't agree on power. The listing says 250 watts of peak power, while the guide's electrical rating line reads 120 V, 60 Hz, 200 W. Peak and rated power are measured differently, so both figures can be right. Just compare like with like.

The best-seller
Hamilton Beach 6-Speed Hand Mixer with QuickBurst and Bowl Rest (62682)
Six speeds plus a QuickBurst button, two traditional beaters and a whisk. Hamilton Beach's guide says to wash the attachments “in dishwasher, top-rack only” and not to use the SANI setting. It doesn't say what the beaters are made of. The guide also says not to run QuickBurst “for more than two minutes at a time.” Warranty is one year. Rated 4.5 stars by more than 67,000 Amazon buyers.
Good for: Cream, cake batter, cookie dough and mashed potatoes in a home kitchen
The drawback: Several buyers had it stop working after about a year, and opinions on speed 1 are mixed, per Amazon's review summary. There are no dough hooks in the box.

KitchenAid's Use and Care guide calls the attachment a “Stainless Steel Turbo Beater,” and the Amazon listing says the same: “Stainless Steel Turbo Beater Accessories, dishwasher-safe.” None of the other three makers names the beater metal in a manual or guide.
The guide KitchenAid hosts under KHM512AQ covers its 3-, 5- and 6-speed mixers as KHM31, KHM51 and KHM61, not KHM512 by name, and the KHM512AQ page on kitchenaid.com returned an error when we checked. The wording matches the listing, so we're comfortable with it, but that's the source.
The turbo beaters “are not designed for mixing and kneading bread dough,” the guide says, and you should always start on the lowest speed.

Stainless beaters
KitchenAid KHM512 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer, Contour Silver
Five speeds and two stainless steel turbo beaters, which KitchenAid's guide says go in the dishwasher on the top rack. Wipe the body with a damp cloth and never put it in water. KitchenAid gives a one-year warranty. Rated 4.6 stars by more than 28,000 Amazon buyers, a count shared across its colors.
Good for: Cream, egg whites, cookie dough and frosting, with a maker that names the beater metal
The drawback: Opinions on power are split. Per Amazon's review summary, some buyers found it struggles with cake batter and mashed potatoes. The Amazon spec table lists 60 W, and the maker says no bread dough.
See the KitchenAid KHM512 on AmazonCheap Hand Mixer: OVENTE 5-Speed
The OVENTE HM151 is the budget best-seller of the four. It comes with two beaters and a snap-on case, and more than 13,000 buyers have rated it.
OVENTE's manual says “do not operate it for more than five minutes at a time” and lists 150 W. That's fine for a bowl of whipped cream or a box cake. It isn't built for long sessions with stiff dough.
The Amazon listing calls them “stainless steel whisk beater attachments,” while the listing's own Material field says plastic, and OVENTE's manual names no metal. We'd treat the stainless claim as unconfirmed.

Budget pick
OVENTE 5-Speed Electric Hand Mixer HM151
Five speeds, 150 W, two beaters and a snap-on storage case. OVENTE's manual says the beaters are dishwasher safe “but will be more thoroughly cleaned if hand washed with warm, soapy water,” and that the body should only be wiped with a damp cloth. Rated 4.5 stars by more than 13,000 Amazon buyers.
Good for: Whipped cream, boxed cake mixes and small batches
The drawback: Amazon's review summary mentions units breaking after limited use, and buyers say the lowest speed is still fast. The manual caps each run at five minutes.
See the OVENTE hand mixer on AmazonMost Attachments: Hamilton Beach Easy Clean
It's the only hand mixer with dough hooks among our picks, so it can take small batches of bread dough. In the case are seven attachments: two Easy Clean beaters, two traditional beaters, two dough hooks and a whisk.
Hamilton Beach says the Easy Clean beaters' “smooth, innovative design glides through ingredients without clogging,” so less dough jams between the wires. That matters most with cookie dough.
We couldn't find this exact model (62636J) on hamiltonbeach.com, so the details here come from Hamilton Beach's own text on its Amazon listing, not a manual. That text says the attachments “are dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.” It doesn't name the metal.

Most attachments
Hamilton Beach 6-Speed Hand Mixer with Easy Clean Beaters (62636J)
Six speeds plus QuickBurst, a Bowl Rest, a 5-foot cord and seven dishwasher-safe attachments, according to Hamilton Beach's listing text, which claims “275 watts of peak mixing power.” Amazon lists the weight as 2.9 pounds. Rated 4.6 stars by more than 5,000 Amazon buyers.
Good for: Cookie dough, small bread doughs with the hooks, and cooks who want every attachment in one case
The drawback: Several buyers find the lowest speed too fast, according to Amazon's review summary. Hamilton Beach doesn't name the beater metal.
See the Hamilton Beach Easy Clean on AmazonWhat Hand Mixer Beaters Are Made Of, Maker by Maker
If you searched for a stainless steel hand mixer, the beaters are the part that matters. Most hand mixer beaters are metal wire, often stainless or chrome-plated steel, and a product photo can't tell you which. That's why we looked for the maker's own word, then checked it against the listing.

| Mixer | In the box | Beater metal, per the maker | What the listing says | Dishwasher rule | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton Beach 6-Speed | 2 beaters, whisk | Not stated | Material field: “Plastic, Stainless Steel” | Top rack only; no SANI setting | Hamilton Beach guide (62682) |
| KitchenAid KHM512 | 2 turbo beaters | Stainless steel | “Stainless Steel Turbo Beater Accessories” | Top rack | KitchenAid guide (KHM31/51/61) and listing |
| OVENTE HM151 | 2 beaters | Not stated | “Stainless steel whisk beater attachments”; Material field: plastic | Dishwasher safe; hand washing cleans better | OVENTE HM151 manual |
| Hamilton Beach Easy Clean | 2 Easy Clean beaters, 2 traditional beaters, 2 dough hooks, whisk | Not stated | Material field: plastic | Dishwasher safe | Hamilton Beach text on the listing |
Only KitchenAid's guide commits to stainless. The Material field on Amazon isn't much help either: it says “Plastic” on the OVENTE and Easy Clean listings and “Plastic, Stainless Steel” on the Hamilton Beach 6-Speed, which doesn't tell you which part it describes.
Some newer mixers add a silicone edge to the beaters so they scrape the bowl as they turn; KitchenAid sells Flex Edge beaters for some of its hand mixers. That's one more material in contact with food, so check what the maker says about it before you buy.

What a Hand Mixer Is Good For
A hand mixer for baking is at its best on light, airy jobs and medium-thick batters. It struggles with anything that needs long kneading.
| Job | Use | Which picks have it |
|---|---|---|
| Whipped cream | Whisk, or beaters on high | All four |
| Egg whites and meringue | Whisk, or beaters on high | Whisk on both Hamilton Beach picks; KitchenAid's guide uses its turbo beaters |
| Cake batter and brownies | Beaters, medium speed | All four |
| Cookie dough | Beaters, low then medium | All four; Hamilton Beach says its Easy Clean beaters clog less |
| Mashed potatoes | Beaters, start low then medium-high | All four |
| Small bread doughs | Dough hooks | Easy Clean only; KitchenAid says its beaters aren't for bread dough |
Any of the four works as a hand mixer for whipped cream. A cold bowl and cold cream speed things up a lot. Start on a low speed until the cream thickens, then go up. Stop when it holds soft peaks. Keep going much longer and it heads toward butter.
For cookie dough, cream the butter and sugar first, then mix the flour in on the lowest speed so it doesn't fly out of the bowl. That's where a too-fast first speed shows up. Finish by folding with a good spatula, which also gets the last of the dough off the beaters.

Baking by weight makes all of this more predictable; our guide on how to choose a kitchen scale covers that. For quick breads and pound cake, see our pick for the best loaf pan, and once it's baked, here's how to keep bread fresh.
Watts, Speeds, Weight and Noise: What the Numbers Mean
Watts
Wattage figures are hard to compare across brands. As noted above, Hamilton Beach's 250 W peak figure sits on a mixer its guide rates at 200 W. The Easy Clean listing claims 275 watts peak, and KitchenAid's Amazon listing shows just 60 W. So the most powerful hand mixer on paper isn't necessarily the strongest in the bowl.
Speeds
Five or six speeds is plenty. What matters more is how slow the slowest one is, because that's the speed you use to add flour without a cloud. Buyers say the lowest speed runs fast on both the OVENTE and the Easy Clean.
Weight and size
You hold a hand mixer the whole time it runs, so a lightweight, compact model matters on long jobs. None of the makers' guides we read gives a weight, so check the Item Weight on the listing before you buy if your wrists tire easily.
Noise and heavy-duty claims
None of the guides or maker text we read gives a noise figure, so any “quietest hand mixer” claim is a reviewer's ear, not a spec. The same goes for “heavy duty.” The manuals point the other way. Hamilton Beach limits QuickBurst to two minutes at a time, and OVENTE limits each run to five.
Cordless or Corded?
A cordless hand mixer runs on a rechargeable battery, so you can mix at the stove or on the far side of the kitchen island without hunting for an outlet. Both big names in this guide make one.
KitchenAid's is the Go cordless hand mixer (KHMR762). When we checked, it had 4.6 stars but fewer than 1,000 Amazon ratings, and it cost more than any of our picks. Hamilton Beach's cordless hand mixer with infinite speed control showed 3.9 stars from fewer than 200 ratings on its Amazon comparison chart. The cheaper cordless models we found had fewer ratings or lower scores, so none made our list.
For most people, a corded hand mixer is still the better buy. It never runs flat halfway through a batch of frosting, and a 5-foot cord like the Easy Clean's reaches most counters. Go cordless only if your outlets are in awkward places or you mix in short bursts all over the kitchen.
Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer?
A hand mixer is the right tool for cream, eggs, cake batter, cookies and mashed potatoes. It fits in a drawer and works in any bowl, even a pot.
A stand mixer earns its counter space if you bake bread every week, make double batches, or want to walk away while it mixes. KitchenAid's own guide says its hand mixer beaters aren't for bread dough, which is a good dividing line.
Cleaning and Storing a Hand Mixer

- Unplug the mixer before you eject the beaters or wipe it down.
- Wash beaters, whisks and hooks in the dishwasher, on the top rack for the Hamilton Beach 6-Speed and the KitchenAid. Hamilton Beach says not to use the SANI setting.
- Hand wash if you can. OVENTE says its beaters get cleaner with warm, soapy water than in the dishwasher.
- Wipe the body with a soft, damp cloth. Never put it, the cord or the plug in water.
- Dry the beaters fully before they go back in the case, so nothing sits damp in a closed box.
A hand mixer with a case keeps the beaters with the mixer. Both Hamilton Beach picks and the OVENTE come with a snap-on one. If you're sorting out the rest of your baking gear, our bakeware buying guide covers what to keep and what to skip.
Questions People Ask
Is Hamilton Beach or KitchenAid better for a hand mixer?
Hamilton Beach, for most people: it's the bigger seller and comes with six speeds and a whisk. Choose KitchenAid if you want beaters the maker calls stainless steel. Both have a one-year warranty. Neither comes with dough hooks, and KitchenAid says its beaters aren't for bread dough.
What is the highest-rated hand mixer?
Among Amazon's best sellers on October 23, 2026, the KitchenAid KHM512 and the Hamilton Beach Easy Clean both held 4.6 stars. The Hamilton Beach 6-Speed had 4.5 stars but far more ratings, more than 67,000, which makes its score the most settled.
How many watts should a good hand mixer have?
There's no reliable cut-off, because brands measure differently. Hamilton Beach advertises 250 watts peak on a mixer its guide rates at 200 W, and KitchenAid's Amazon listing shows 60 W. Compare the slowest speed, the attachments and the run-time limits in the manual instead.
What hand mixer do Consumer Reports and Wirecutter recommend?
We don't list their winners, because we didn't repeat their tests and Consumer Reports keeps its ratings behind a paywall. Both publish their own hand mixer tests, and rankings shift with each round. CNN Underscored, for example, put a Breville first and a Hamilton Beach as its budget pick.
Are hand mixer attachments universal?
No. Beaters are shaped to fit one brand's sockets, and sometimes only one model line, a point CNN Underscored makes too. Buy replacements by your mixer's model number, which is on the label on the body, and check the maker's parts page before buying a generic set.
What is a hand mixer used for?
A hand mixer is for whipping cream and egg whites, mixing cake batter and brownies, creaming butter and sugar for cookies, and mashing potatoes. With dough hooks, some models can handle small bread doughs, but it's mainly a tool for short, light-to-medium jobs.
Is a hand mixer the same as an electric whisk?
Often, yes. In the UK, “electric whisk” is the everyday name for a hand mixer. In US listings it can also mean a small single-whisk gadget for eggs or milk, which has no beaters or dough hooks and won't handle cookie dough.
