Best Non-Toxic Coffee Maker: 5 Picks, 3 to Skip, and the Part of the Machine Nobody Checks

Every guide I read ranked these machines on the carafe. The carafe is the part you can see, and it is the part that matters least.

I spent about a week inside manufacturer spec pages, support articles and California chemical filings, trying to answer one question: which coffee makers will actually tell you what the hot water touches on its way to your cup?

Most of them won't. A few will, and the answers are not what the popular roundups say they are. One brand publishes a chemical disclosure it isn't legally required to file, and not a single “non-toxic” guide I found has read it. Another one openly states there's aluminium in its brew path while a widely shared article describes the same machine as glass and steel.

So here's what I found, starting with the answer.

The short answer

If you want an automatic machine and you want the water path documented part by part, buy the SimplyGoodCoffee Brewer, plastic-free model. It is the only one that publishes a component list with a steel grade attached.

How I verified this. Every material statement attributed to a manufacturer below is quoted from that company’s own website, product page, spec table, FAQ or support article, checked on 27 August 2026. Where a company doesn’t state something, I write “not stated” rather than filling the gap from a review site. Regulatory figures come from EFSA, the US FDA, California OEHHA, the California Attorney General and EU legislation, all listed at the end.

I have not laboratory-tested anything on this page, and neither has anyone else writing about this category. Nobody has published migration testing on a home drip coffee maker. Where the evidence stops, I say so.

What actually matters, and it isn’t the carafe

Water sits in a tank. It gets pulled through tubing, past a heating element or a boiler, out through a shower head, into a filter basket, and only then does it become coffee that lands in a carafe.

That's five components before the one everybody photographs. Heat and dwell time drive migration from any material into any liquid, which means the tank and the boiler are doing far more work than the glass jug sitting on the warming plate.

So that's what I went looking for, brand by brand: tank, tubing, boiler, shower head, basket. Not marketing copy. Published specifications.

The results reordered the category. Machines that top the popular lists turned out to have acrylic reservoirs or aluminium heating elements their fans never mention, and one machine nobody ranks highly publishes more hard information than all of them.

Each one gets a drawback named, because every product has one and a guide that pretends otherwise isn’t a guide.

Top pick

SimplyGoodCoffee, The Brewer (plastic-free)

The only brand that publishes a component list with a number attached to the steel.

Their own words, and I'm quoting because the specificity is the point: a removable reservoir of “lab-grade borosilicate glass. No plastic lining, no BPA.” A stainless steel boiler. A “precision-milled stainless showerhead.” A “304 stainless steel” filter basket. Borosilicate carafe. Medical-grade silicone seals. And a stated brew path that is “100% plastic-free — no plastic or aluminum contacts water or coffee.”

Nobody else in this category writes at that resolution. Most give you three words and a BPA sticker.

Three drawbacks. The tubing is described more than one way across their pages, and I'll just quote them: a landing page says “No plastic tubing, no silicone hoses — just pure stainless steel channels,” the same page mentions “medical-grade silicone connectors,” and the product page lists “Seals: Medical-grade silicone.” Tubing isn't itemised anywhere I could find. Weigh that yourself; I'd want one clear answer first.

Second, “surgical-grade stainless steel” is a phrase, not a number. The 304 figure attaches to the basket, not the boiler. Third, there's no PFAS, PTFE or BPS statement at all. The BPA claim is the whole claim.

One more thing I noticed and couldn't resolve: the carafe is described as having a mixing tube, which brewed coffee runs across on its way into the jug. I could find no material stated for it anywhere. Probably stainless, given everything else. But “probably” is what this whole article exists to avoid, so I'm listing it as not stated rather than assuming.

Buy the right one. Their FAQ describes a heating element made “primarily of food-grade aluminum.” That answer covers the older line, not the plastic-free model. Order the wrong variant and you get the aluminium element. Check the listing carefully.

Most honest brand

Ratio Eight, Series 2

Names its polymers. Volunteers the thing everyone else buries.

Ratio is the only company here that tells you which plastic, by name. A single internal component is polysulfone, which they describe as FDA certified and NSF compliant. The tank is Tritan. The water lines are hand-blown borosilicate glass. The shower head is stainless. The filter basket is double-wall stainless. The carafe is hand-blown borosilicate.

Then they do something almost nobody does, which is print the awkward part themselves.

On Ratio's own product page, the Eight has “a stainless steel, aluminum, and glass brew path once brewing begins.” Aluminium, stated plainly, by the manufacturer.

Here is where it gets interesting, and I'm going to quote both sides. The Amazon listing for this same machine says: “Plastic-Free Brew Path — Heated water travels through stainless steel and glass instead of plastic.” That is not false. There genuinely is no plastic in the path, and the sentence is answering a question about plastic. It simply doesn't mention the aluminium, because it never claimed to be aluminium-free.

But if you are shopping on the phrase “plastic-free brew path” and you also care about aluminium, the retail listing alone will not tell you, and the manufacturer's own site will. That gap, in miniature, is the reason this article exists.

No PFAS, PTFE, BPS or phthalate claim anywhere, and no steel grade stated for any part.

Don't reach for the cheaper Ratio to save money. The Ratio Four is roughly a third of the price, and Ratio's own page lists an “aluminum internal heating system,” “silicone water lines” and a “polypropylene brew basket.” That last one puts plastic directly in the path your coffee runs through. If you are buying a Ratio for the materials, it has to be the Eight.

Best coffee

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select

Buy it. Just not for the reasons you've been given.

It's a superb brewer, handmade in the Netherlands, ECBC certified and SCA approved. The boiling element is copper, which is unusual and is the reason it holds temperature the way it does. Technivorm states all its plastics are free of BPA, BPS, BPF and phthalates.

There's also a design point in its favour that nobody frames this way. Technivorm describes it as a pump-free brewer, and for a water-path question that matters: no pump means one fewer wetted component between the tank and your cup. Fewer parts, fewer materials to ask about.

Now the corrections, and there are two worth knowing before you spend this much.

The reservoir is acrylic. Technivorm says so plainly and every roundup I read left it out. And when asked directly about the No. 7 recycling code on its plastics, the company answers that the code “is a catch-all for a mixture of different plastics that do not have their own specific recycling symbols, which is the case for some of the plastics we use.” That identifies a recycling category, not a polymer, which leaves a buyer nothing to look up.

Technivorm also makes no PFAS or PTFE claim anywhere. So when a major guide describes this machine as built from “stainless steel, BPA-free, and PFAS-free materials,” that third one came from the writer, not the manufacturer.

One claim of theirs does hold up better than it sounds: that Dutch food-contact rules are considerably stricter than the American equivalent. Given what the EU did to BPA in 2025, which I get into further down, that's a substantive point rather than a boast.

A last observation, and it applies to how you shop rather than to the machine. Everything I've just told you about this brewer's materials came from Technivorm's own website. Its retail listing mentions brew temperature, brew time, the volume selector, the auto shut-off and the warranty — and not one material, not even BPA-free. If you buy from the product page alone, you learn nothing about what your water touches. That is true of almost every machine in this category.

Best value

Chemex Classic

No tank. No tubing. No pump. No boiler. Nothing to disclose.

A Chemex removes more hot-water-through-plastic from your kitchen than anything else on this page, for a fraction of the outlay. Its material disclosure is close to complete by construction, because the product is glass and paper and that's the entire list.

If your budget is the real constraint here, this is the honest recommendation, and I'd rather say that than push you toward something expensive.

Two drawbacks, and the first one catches people. You haven't removed the water path, you've moved it. Whatever kettle you boil in is now the component in question, and a plastic-lined kettle quietly undoes the whole exercise.

Second, every drop of your coffee goes through a paper filter. Chemex says its white filters get “an oxygen cleansing bath followed by a series of hot water baths,” the brown ones hot water only, and that “we don't use any bleach or chemicals in our filter paper.” Oxygen whitening genuinely is better than chlorine bleaching. It's still a process, and Chemex publishes no PFAS testing on the paper. Neither does anyone else — which is strange, given a pour-over shows up on four of the five biggest guides in this category.

Filters are not included, and the type matters. Chemex sells both white and natural filters. Buy the natural, unbleached ones — check the listing says unbleached or natural rather than classic or white. It is the single component 100% of your coffee passes through, and it costs almost nothing to get right.

No electronics

Bialetti Venus

18/10 stainless, and one of only three products here where a brand puts a number on the steel.

No pump, no plastic tank, no coating, no electronics. The handle is thermoplastic and never touches the brew. For a certain kind of buyer that simplicity is the entire appeal, and I understand it.

The drawbacks. Bialetti doesn't state the gasket material anywhere I looked — not the product page, not the care instructions — and the gasket sits directly in the steam path and ages faster than anything else on the pot. The funnel and filter plate aren't separately specified either.

I went as far as the official replacement pack to try to settle it, since that is the one product whose entire job is to be a gasket. Its material field reads “Metal,” which describes the filter plate in the box rather than the three rubber rings beside it. So the answer is still: not stated. On the one component most likely to degrade, on the one product that is nothing but that component.

And be honest with yourself about what this is. Moka coffee isn't drip coffee. If you wanted a machine that has a pot ready when you walk into the kitchen, this isn't it.

Venus, not the Moka Express. The classic Moka Express is listed by Bialetti as “Body material: aluminum,” with no alloy, no anodising status and no coating statement. If aluminium is your concern, the model name matters.

Two small things when you order. The Venus comes in a plain stainless finish and a copper-toned one; the finish is on the outside and doesn't touch your coffee, but if you are buying this pot precisely because it is one uncoated material, the plain stainless version is the cleaner expression of that — and it is usually the cheaper one. And note the size, because gaskets are sized to the pot. A 4-cup gasket will not seal a 6-cup Venus.

Which one is right for you

The gap I won't paper over

There is no automatic drip machine at a modest price with a properly documented water path. The well-documented automatics sit at the premium end, and below them the honest answers are manual. A Chemex or a Venus buys you more verified transparency than a mid-priced automatic will. Every guide in this category has the same hole; none of them admit it.

Three things to skip

1. Buying on a “BPA-free” label alone

Not a product. A habit, and it's the one doing the most damage.

“BPA-free” is a negative claim about one molecule in a family. It says nothing about BPS or BPF, nothing about PFAS, nothing about which component is plastic, and nothing about whether that component sits in the hot path or the outer shell. Three of the five leading guides rest their whole recommendation on it. One of them warns in its own text that even BPA-free plastic degrades under repeated heating, then recommends two machines specifically because their plastic is BPA-free.

2. Any machine chosen for its “brass” boiler

I cover this in the metals section below. Short version: brass in wetted parts is a regulated lead question, not a premium-material story. Buy a lever machine because you want a lever machine. Don't buy one because a guide told you brass was the non-toxic choice.

3. Pod and capsule machines, if this is genuinely your concern

The biggest category of hot-water-through-plastic on the market, and not one of the five leading guides gives it a verdict. They just omit it.

You deserve the direct answer. A pod machine drives pressurised hot water through a plastic or plastic-lined capsule at brew temperature, and no manufacturer in this space publishes migration data on that. That isn't proof of harm. It's the absence of exactly the evidence you came looking for, in the product category where you'd most want it. Why “BPA-free” stopped meaning much in 2025

Every guide in this category sells you BPA-free as the finish line. Two things happened that make the label far less informative than it was, and I couldn't find either one mentioned anywhere.

Europe banned it. Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 came into force on 20 January 2025 and prohibits bisphenol A, its salts and other hazardous bisphenols in food contact materials across the EU. Plastics, coatings, varnishes, adhesives, rubbers, printing inks, silicones, ion-exchange resins. Transition periods run out to 2029 for some categories, with narrow exemptions where no safe alternative exists.

The United States didn't. The FDA's published position is still that “BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods.” That rests on a review of more than 300 studies completed in 2014. The FDA did end BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups in 2012 and infant formula coatings in 2013, and said plainly that an amendment made on abandonment grounds “is not based on safety.” A petition asking the agency to revisit BPA in food contact materials has been pending since 2022, past its decision deadline, and the position hasn't moved.

Between the two, EFSA re-evaluated the chemical and on 19 April 2023 set a new tolerable daily intake of 0.2 nanograms per kilogram of body weight per day, replacing its previous temporary figure of 4 micrograms per kilogram. That's a 20,000-fold reduction. The driver was immune-system effects, specifically increases in T helper white blood cells linked to allergic lung inflammation. EFSA concluded that consumers at average and high exposure, in every age group, exceed the new value.

I'm not going to tell you who's right. EFSA's conclusion is genuinely contested — the European Medicines Agency published a formal divergent opinion, and Germany's BfR disagreed too, both mainly on methodology. What I will tell you is that two competent regulators looked at the same molecule and landed orders of magnitude apart, and a sticker on a box is not a summary of that argument.

Olive is the United States: 2014, the review that still underpins its position. Amber is Europe: 2023, EFSA cuts the tolerable daily intake 20,000-fold; 2025, the prohibition takes effect; 2029, the last transition periods close.

The one practical thing this gives you

A machine sold into the European market now has to meet the BPA prohibition in its food-contact parts. A machine sold only in the US doesn't. That's not a guarantee about any specific model, and it says nothing about the substitutes. But if a brand manufactures for both markets and says so, that's a harder fact than a marketing label.

The substitution problem is worth naming too. Swapping BPA for BPS or BPF changes the letter; the published concern about hormonal activity travels with the chemical family, not the acronym. What a Prop 65 warning does and doesn't tell you

One competing guide builds a per-product table with rows reading “No Proposition 65 warning required,” presented as evidence of safety. It isn't, and the reason is specific.

BPA was listed under Prop 65 for developmental toxicity in April 2013, delisted during litigation, re-listed for female reproductive toxicity on 11 May 2015, with the developmental endpoint reinstated on 18 December 2020. OEHHA has set a Maximum Allowable Dose Level for BPA of 3 micrograms per day, for dermal exposure from solid materials.

Dermal. From solid materials. That's the safe-harbour level for touching a thing, not for drinking out of it. There is no oral MADL for BPA at all. So the absence of a Prop 65 warning on a coffee maker carries no information whatsoever about what ends up in your cup.

Two more things the category gets wrong. Prop 65 is a warning and disclosure statute; it isn't a safety standard and it isn't a ban. And a warning that is present often attaches to the power cord, the internal wiring or the packaging rather than anything the water ever touches.

The disclosure law that doesn’t cover coffee makers

California's AB 1200 requires cookware manufacturers to publish the intentionally added chemicals in their products that appear on a state designated list. Website disclosure took effect 1 January 2023, label disclosure 1 January 2024, under Health and Safety Code sections 109010 and following. The duty bites where a listed chemical is intentionally included in the handle, or in any surface that contacts food or beverages.

We leaned on this law heavily in our non-toxic slow cooker guide, where it works beautifully. For coffee makers it mostly doesn't, and that turned out to be the finding.

Breville publishes an AB 1200 page covering microwaves, deep fryers, grills, rice cookers, pressure cookers, pizza ovens, ovens and bread makers. No coffee or espresso machines. De'Longhi — one of the largest coffee machine manufacturers on earth — publishes one covering grills, skillets, slow cookers, baking moulds, air fryers, deep fryers, bowls, grids and jugs, and discloses tetrafluoroethylene and PFAS in several of those. Its coffee machines aren't on it.

Both read the statute's cookware definition — pots, pans, skillets, grills, baking sheets, moulds, trays, bowls, cooking utensils — as excluding a coffee maker while including other countertop appliances. You can disagree with that reading. The practical result isn't in dispute: for most of this category, there's nothing to look up.

One brand went the other way, and it deserves credit for it.

OXO published a disclosure for its coffee makers when it didn't have to. As published on OXO's required material disclosures page and checked on 27 August 2026, an “Electrics” section lists the OXO Brew 8 Cup Coffee Maker, the 9 Cup, the cold brew maker and the conical burr grinder. For the 8 Cup and 9 Cup the page lists nine substances: aluminum, chromium compounds, chromium (total), copper, iron, manganese and manganese compounds, nickel and nickel compounds, nickel (metallic and alloys), and zinc.

Separately, OXO's customer FAQ states of the same machine: “All parts that contact coffee or water are BPA free.”

What that list means, and what it doesn't. This is a legal compliance filing and it needs reading properly. AB 1200 asks manufacturers to name intentionally added chemicals from a state list. It doesn't say which component contains them. It doesn't establish that any of them reach the water, or in what quantity. And most of the entries are simply what metal appliances are made of — iron, chromium and nickel are the constituents of stainless steel; copper and aluminium are ordinary heating and wiring materials. Nothing on that page indicates the machine is unsafe, and I'm not suggesting it is. A filing is a sign of a company disclosing, not a warning.

My point is about the guides, not the appliance. The one coffee maker in this category with a published chemical disclosure is also the one whose disclosure appears in none of the “non-toxic” roundups, while its single-sentence BPA claim is quoted in several. When a brand publishes more than the reviewers read, the reviewing is the problem.

Aluminium, brass and nickel

Aluminium lives in the heating element, not the pot

Competing guides warn about aluminium in the abstract, then recommend machines whose heating elements are aluminium, because they never asked.

Ratio is the honourable exception, as I said above. That's more than at least one widely shared roundup reports, which describes the same machine's hot water pathway as glass and stainless steel and doesn't mention aluminium at all.

For scale: EFSA set a tolerable weekly intake for aluminium of 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight in 2008, and concluded intakes may exceed it for a significant part of the European population. EFSA also noted that food contact materials like pots, pans and foil contribute, but that the available studies couldn't determine how much comes from cookware specifically. Nobody has isolated what a coffee machine heating element adds. Anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.

You'll also see aluminium linked to Alzheimer's in this category, sometimes with a citation attached that doesn't support the sentence. That hypothesis has been examined for decades and current consensus doesn't establish a causal link. I'm not going to sell you a coffee maker on it.

Brass, and the lead question in lever espresso machines

This is the sharpest miss I found. At least one guide recommends a high-end lever espresso machine specifically for its brass brew tank, presented as a virtue.

Before anything else: this is about a class of material, not about any particular machine or manufacturer. I haven't tested any espresso machine, I'm not aware of any current model failing an applicable lead standard, and nothing here should be read as a claim that a specific product is non-compliant or unsafe.

Lead is added to brass because it makes the alloy easier to machine, and brass turns up in brew groups, valves, boilers and fittings, all of them wetted parts. The espresso trade has discussed this openly for years. Historical lead content in machining brass fell from roughly 6% to 3% to about 1.5% over time. US federal and California rules cap lead at a weighted average of 0.25% across the wetted surfaces of drinking-water components; the EU comes at the same problem from the other end, capping lead at the tap at 5 micrograms per litre and authorising drinking-water brasses at 0.2% or lower on its positive list. Manufacturers responded by moving to lead-free brass and bronze, or nickel-plating the wetted surfaces.

None of which makes a particular machine unsafe. It does mean “brass” isn't a non-toxicity selling point, and a guide presenting it as one hasn't looked at the component. If a machine has been sitting unused, run and tip the first draw rather than drinking it.

Nickel, and the one drawback of an all-stainless machine

Every guide in this category treats stainless steel as the safe answer, full stop, no caveat. There is a caveat, and it belongs to a specific group of readers who are never told.

Austenitic stainless of the 304 and 18-8 family contains roughly 8 to 10.5% nickel, which is what makes it corrosion-resistant in the first place. EFSA's 2020 update set a tolerable daily intake for nickel of 13 micrograms per kilogram of body weight, based on post-implantation loss in rats. For acute exposure it identified systemic contact dermatitis in nickel-sensitised people as the critical effect. It did not set an acute reference dose — the data were judged insufficient — and instead used a lowest-observed-adverse-effect level of 4.3 micrograms of nickel per kilogram of body weight with a margin-of-exposure approach, treating an MOE of 30 or higher as low concern. Its conclusion was that acute dietary exposure raises a concern for nickel-sensitised individuals, and that chronic exposure exceeds the TDI mainly in toddlers and young children at the high end.

Watch the wording, because it gets mangled elsewhere: 4.3 micrograms per kilogram is a LOAEL used as a reference point, not an acute reference dose. Anyone citing it as an ARfD has copied it from someone who didn't read the opinion.

What this means practically. For most people it's no reason to avoid stainless at all. But if you are nickel-sensitised, an all-stainless water path is the one recommendation every “non-toxic” guide makes that is arguably worse for you than glass, and not one of them says so. What the microplastics research actually says

Microplastics get invoked constantly in this category and cited almost never. Here's the current picture, stated accurately.

A University of Birmingham team published in Science of the Total Environment in 2025, measuring 155 samples across 31 beverage products bought from UK shops and cafes. Hot coffee averaged about 43 microplastic particles per litre. Hot tea about 60, iced coffee 37, iced tea 31, fruit juice 30, energy drinks 25, soft drinks lowest at 17. Sizes ran mostly between 10 and 157 micrometres, and the polymers were polypropylene, polystyrene, PET and polyethylene. Hot drinks carried more than cold, consistent with heat driving migration from packaging.

Now the part that matters for your purchase. That study measured drinks bought in shops and cafes. It did not test home brewing equipment. The finding is about takeaway cups, sachets and capsules — the packaging — not about your machine. No published study has measured microplastic release from a home drip coffee maker.

So the honest position is this. Heat plus plastic plus liquid produces migration; that much is established. Whether your specific machine contributes meaningfully has not been measured by anyone, me included. What the evidence does support cleanly is that the to-go cup is a larger and much better documented exposure than the brewer on your counter, which means a reusable vessel might do more for you than a new machine. Every guide in this category answers “what should I buy.” Most people reading this aren't going to replace a working appliance, and there's real ground to gain without spending anything.

Don't let water sit hot in the reservoir. Migration is driven by temperature and contact time. A tank kept warm all morning is the worst case; filling it for the brew you're about to make is the best.

Tip out the first brew after a long gap. A holiday, a house move, a machine straight out of the box. Standard practice for wetted brass, and it costs you one pot.

Descale on schedule, with their product or plain white vinegar. Scale insulates the element and pushes it to run hotter; harsh descalers age gaskets. See our espresso machine cleaning guide.

Look at your water before you look at your machine. Everything in the cup arrived through the tap. Municipal supply and household plumbing are a bigger and better-characterised exposure route than a countertop appliance, and not one competing guide mentions it. Questions people actually ask

Is there a genuinely 100% plastic-free automatic coffee maker?
One brand claims a 100% plastic-free brew path and backs it with a component list. Even there, silicone seals are present, and silicone is a synthetic polymer — just not the polymer people mean. Machines with zero polymer anywhere in the water path don't exist in the consumer market, because seals have to seal.

Does a Prop 65 warning mean the coffee maker is unsafe?
No. It's a disclosure statute, not a safety standard. The warning frequently attaches to a power cord or packaging rather than any wetted part, and BPA's safe-harbour level is set for dermal exposure from solid materials, not for drinking.

Is stainless steel always the safest choice?
For most people it's a good default. For nickel-sensitised readers it's the one material worth a second thought, because austenitic stainless contains nickel and EFSA identified systemic contact dermatitis in nickel-sensitised people as the critical acute effect. Glass is the alternative.

Should I look up my coffee maker's AB 1200 disclosure?
Search the brand name plus “AB 1200.” For most coffee brands you'll find nothing, because manufacturers generally read the cookware definition as excluding brewers. OXO is the exception worth checking. An absent page isn't evidence of non-compliance; it usually means the brand doesn't classify a brewer as cookware.

Does “food-grade” or “medical-grade” plastic mean it's safe at brew temperature?
Those phrases describe a compliance category, not a test result at your operating temperature. The useful question is which specific polymer, in which specific part. Only one brand in this whole research set answered it by name.

Freshness note: bisphenol regulation is moving. The EU prohibition has transition periods running to 2029, and the FDA has been asked to reconsider its position.
