Editorial note. This is a buying guide, not a medical or legal document. It explains how to check a specific container before you pay for it, using information manufacturers are already required to publish. It does not diagnose anything, it does not tell you your current containers are harming you, and it does not claim any product is risk-free.
We do not run a laboratory. Everything below comes from regulations, agency guidance, published research, and manufacturers’ own disclosures — all named at the end so you can read them yourself.
The 30-second answer
If you only do one thing before buying, do this: search the brand name plus “AB 1200” and read what comes up.
California law requires cookware manufacturers to publish, on their own websites, every chemical from a state list that they intentionally added to the product. The law’s own definition of cookware includes items used to store food. So for most brands sold in the US, that page either exists, or its absence tells you something.
Then check the container in parts, not as one object. The body, the lid, the gasket, the steam vent and the locking clips are frequently four or five different materials. “Glass container” almost always means a glass body with a plastic lid, and the lid is the part your hot food breathes into.

What this guide covers
First, the uncomfortable part: “non-toxic” is a marketing word
There is no legal definition of “non-toxic” for food containers in the United States. No agency issues a non-toxic certificate. A brand can print it on the box tomorrow without testing anything.
What does exist is far more boring and far more useful. The FDA clears specific materials for food contact and writes the rules down in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations — polypropylene and polyethylene under the olefin polymers section, silicone rubber under the repeated-use rubber articles section, and so on. A container made from a cleared material at a compliant grade is legal for food contact. That is the actual claim behind most “food grade” language.
“Food grade” and “non-toxic” are not the same promise. The first is a real regulatory status. The second is a mood.
The check that does most of the work: brand name + “AB 1200”
California’s AB 1200 took effect in stages. Since 1 January 2023 manufacturers have had to post the required chemical information on their websites. Since 1 January 2024 it has also had to appear on the product label, with a link and a QR code pointing back to the online listing.
Here is the part almost nobody quotes. The statute (added to the Health and Safety Code as Chapter 15, starting at Section 109000) defines cookware as:
“Durable houseware items that are used in homes and restaurants to prepare, dispense, or store food, foodstuffs, or beverages.”
Store. The word is right there in the definition. Food storage containers are durable houseware items used to store food. Most guides to “non-toxic containers” never mention this law at all, and the ones that do treat it as a cookware-only rule.

The chemicals that must be disclosed come from the state’s designated list — the Department of Toxic Substances Control’s candidate chemicals — when they are intentionally added, meaning added for a functional or technical purpose. There is also a specific rule against marketing: a manufacturer cannot claim its product is free of a named chemical if another chemical from the same class or group was intentionally added. That single provision is why you should treat “PFOA-free” with suspicion. PFOA is one compound in a class of thousands.
In October 2023, the California Attorney General issued an enforcement advisory to manufacturers reminding them of these duties and noting that non-compliance can be pursued under the Unfair Competition Law, with civil penalties and injunctive relief available. So these pages are not optional goodwill. They are a legal obligation with a regulator behind it.
What a good disclosure page looks like, and what a lazy one looks like
This is where the buying signal lives, and it is the reason we teach this check rather than a brand list. Filing quality varies enormously, and you can read it in about a minute.

Check the parts, not the product
A container is not one material. Pick one up and count: body, lid, gasket, vent, clips. Each is made separately, often by a different supplier, and the marketing name only ever describes the body.
Five parts, four materials. The product name only ever describes the first one.
This matters most in the direction people never think about. A glass container is sold as the safe choice, and the body genuinely is inert. But the lid on almost every set is polypropylene — recycling code 5 — usually with a silicone gasket pressed into a channel. When you put hot food in and close the lid, steam condenses on plastic and drips back down. If your reason for buying glass was avoiding hot-food contact with plastic, the lid is where that reasoning quietly fails.
This is not a reason to avoid glass. It is a reason to stop closing the lid on food that is still steaming, and to buy sets where you can replace a warped or cracked lid instead of the whole container. We compared the two materials properly, lid included, in glass vs plastic storage containers.

Five traps in this category
1. “BPA-free” tells you what is missing, never what is there
BPA is one compound. Removing it says nothing about what replaced it, and the common replacements — BPS, BPF and others in the same family — are less studied, not better studied. The AB 1200 rule about class-wide claims exists precisely because swapping one member of a chemical family for another is such an easy story to tell.
Treat “BPA-free” as the floor of the conversation, not the end of it. A full material name — “polypropylene, recycling code 5” — is worth more than three absence claims. Our explainer on plastic grades for food storage covers what each number actually means.
2. Bamboo-fibre containers are plastic containers
A “bamboo fibre” or “eco bamboo” food container is normally melamine-formaldehyde resin with ground bamboo used as a filler. The bamboo is the filler. The plastic is the product.
Cut one open and the "bamboo" turns out to be filler in a melamine-formaldehyde resin.
The European Union has been unambiguous about this. Under Regulation (EU) 10/2011, every substance used in a plastic food-contact article must be assessed and authorised first, and bamboo powder has never been authorised. In the EU’s coordinated enforcement action — officially named “Bamboo-zling,” which tells you how they felt about it — 21 member states plus Norway identified 748 cases, with 644 products found on the market and 104 rejected at the border. Testing on bamboo-fibre coffee cups found formaldehyde migrating at 25 times the permitted limit and melamine at 3.5 times. Products were withdrawn, recalled or destroyed. The action closed in April 2022; monitoring continues.
The United States has not taken the same step, so these products are still widely sold here. That is a difference in regulation, not a difference in the material.
3. Melamine dishes have one specific rule, and it is about heat
The FDA’s position on melamine tableware is more nuanced than either side of the internet argument suggests. It found migration in testing only into acidic foods under exaggerated conditions — food held in the tableware at 160°F for two hours — and even then at levels it describes as roughly 250 times lower than the amount it considers acceptable in food.
But it also says this plainly: “Foods and drinks should not be heated on melamine-based dinnerware in microwave ovens,” and that highly acidic food heated to 160°F or above increases how much melamine migrates. So melamine is not a crisis. It is a material with a temperature rule, and reheating tomato sauce is the exact situation the rule is written for.
4. A Proposition 65 warning is not a verdict
Stainless steel lunch boxes and bento tins often carry a Prop 65 warning, and shoppers read it as an accusation. OEHHA, the California agency that runs the programme, says a warning means a business is aware or believes a listed chemical is present — not that the product is unsafe or violates any standard.
On stainless specifically, the specialty steel industry association points out that OEHHA has explicitly recognised the nickel-compounds cancer listing does not include nickel alloys such as stainless steel, that only hexavalent chromium is listed and it is not present in stainless in measurable quantities, and that Prop 65’s own regulations treat nickel as presenting no significant cancer risk by ingestion. Read that as context, not as an all-clear: some brands warn because of a genuine component, and many warn defensively because a lawsuit is cheaper to avoid than to win.
What actually deserves your attention on a stainless container is not the warning label. It is whether the body is a named grade — 304, also written 18/8 — whether the interior is bare metal rather than coated or painted, and how the seams are joined. A rolled or welded seam is a different proposition from a soldered one. We go further into grades in our guide to stainless steel food containers.
5. The silicone “pinch test” does not do what people think
The advice circulating everywhere is to twist or pinch silicone and reject it if white shows through, on the theory that white means cheap filler. It is a poor test. Pigment behaviour, thickness and the specific compound all affect whether a piece blanches under stress, and plenty of well-made food-grade silicone will show some whitening. It cannot distinguish a filler from a colourant, and no home test can.
What is worth asking about is post-curing — a secondary bake after moulding that drives off residual volatile compounds. Manufacturers who do it usually say so, because it costs them money. Silicone rubber articles intended for repeated food contact are covered by the FDA’s rubber-articles regulation, which sets extractives limits under defined test conditions, so a supplier claiming compliance is claiming something specific and checkable. One habit worth more than any purchase
Do not reheat food in plastic. Move it to glass or ceramic first.
A 2023 study in Environmental Science & Technology, led by Kazi Albab Hussain at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, heated FDA-cleared polypropylene containers and a polyethylene pouch at full power for three minutes in a 1,000-watt microwave, filled with deionised water or 3% acetic acid. It measured release of up to 4 million microplastic and 2 billion nanoplastic particles per square centimetre of container surface. Simulated six-month refrigerated and room-temperature storage also released particles, at far lower rates.

Read that carefully, because it is routinely overstated. It is a laboratory study using water and dilute acid, not a study of what ends up in your body, and the health significance is genuinely unsettled. What it does establish is that the microwave step is where release concentrates. Which means the fix costs nothing: store in whatever you like, then decant before heating. What we would buy, and what is wrong with each
Three picks, one per situation. Each one has a drawback written into it, because a recommendation without a drawback is an advertisement.
We also ran the AB 1200 search on all three ourselves, the same search we asked you to run, and we report what came back — including the two where it came back empty. It would be a strange guide that taught a check and then quietly skipped it on its own recommendations.
Best all-rounder for the fridge
Pyrex FreshLock Glass Storage Set
Why it earns the spot: a glass body that will not stain, hold odour or take on the smell of last week’s curry, with locking lids that Pyrex states are airtight and leakproof across four tabs. Top-rack dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe, and this line is manufactured in the USA. The reason it beats the cheaper sets sitting next to it is duller and more important: Pyrex sells the lids on their own. Most brands do not. That turns a cracked lid into a small purchase instead of a dead container, and it is the single biggest factor in how long a glass set actually lasts you.
AB 1200 check: passes. Pyrex publishes a product disclosure list carrying a month and year, which puts it in the better tier of filings in this category.
The drawback: the lids are plastic, and the listing says only “BPA-free” without ever naming the polymer — the exact detail this guide tells you to look for. Amazon’s own material field says nothing more useful than “glass, plastic.” The locking tabs are also the first thing to fail; they crack long before the glass ever does. We kept the set in because the replacement lids exist, not because the lids are good.

Best when nothing plastic should touch the food

Why it earns the spot: the listing does something we almost never see and says it in one line — “18/8 stainless steel is all that touches your food,” including on the versions with coloured covers. That is the check in this whole guide, answered by the manufacturer without being asked. There is no coating to wear through, no gasket to grow mould in, no vent, and nothing to replace. Two sections, one piece of steel.
AB 1200 check: we could not find a disclosure page for LunchBots. Weigh that against the fact that the product is one named alloy with nothing on it — there is far less to disclose here than on a coated pan — but we would rather tell you the search came back empty than skip it.
The drawback: dry food only, and there is a contradiction on the page you should know about. Amazon’s attribute panel tags this “leak resistant.” LunchBots’ own bullet says “the lids and dividers aren’t watertight — be sure to pack only dry foods.” Believe the manufacturer, not the panel. This is a transport box for sandwiches, fruit and dry snacks. It is not a container for soup, dressing or anything you would tip on its side.

Best single material — no lid, no gasket, no valve
Zip Top Reusable Containers, 8-Piece Set
Why it earns the spot: go back to the parts table at the top of this guide and count how many rows this product removes. There is no lid, because it zips shut. So there is no gasket, no vent and no second plastic hiding in the seal. It is 100% platinum silicone, one piece, made in the USA, and it stands up on its own so you are not holding it open with one hand. If the thing that bothers you is not knowing what is in the lid, this is the honest answer to that worry.
AB 1200 check: no disclosure page found.
The drawback: the zip is not an airtight seal — tip one over with liquid in it and it will leak. Tomato, oil and anything strongly pigmented will stain the silicone, and strong smells take repeated washing to shift, sometimes more than one attempt with bicarbonate. They do not stack, so a full set eats more fridge space than the same capacity in rigid boxes. And it is among the priciest silicone storage you can buy. One more thing, since this guide told you to ask: Zip Top’s own silicone page states the material and nothing else — no mention of post-curing, and no third-party testing named. That is the question we would put to them before buying the largest set.

The 60-second check, before you pay
- Search brand name + “AB 1200”. Note whether the filing is per product or one blanket sentence.
- Find the body material named in full — “304 stainless,” “polypropylene,” “tempered glass” — not implied by the product name.
- Find the lid material. If the listing does not say, that is your answer about how much they disclose.
- Check whether the gasket is removable and whether replacement lids are sold.
- Ignore “BPA-free” and “PFOA-free” as decision inputs. Look for what is there.
- If it says bamboo fibre, put it back.

Questions people actually ask
Is there such a thing as a certified non-toxic container?
No. No US agency certifies the phrase “non-toxic” for food containers. What you can verify is that a material is cleared for food contact under FDA regulations, and what a manufacturer has disclosed under California AB 1200. Those are real, checkable things. “Certified non-toxic” is not.
Do I need to throw out my current plastic containers?
Nothing in the research supports a panic replacement, and we are not going to manufacture one. Change the highest-exposure habit first: stop microwaving in them, and retire any container that is cracked, deeply scratched, cloudy or permanently stained, because damaged surfaces shed more and clean less well. Replace the rest as they wear out.
Is a glass container with a plastic lid still a good choice?
Yes, for most households. The food sits against glass, and the lid only matters when steam condenses on it. Let food cool before sealing, do not microwave with the lid clamped shut, and choose a set that sells replacement lids.
Is 18/8 the same as 304 stainless?
In practice, yes — 18/8 describes roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which is the composition family of 304. Treat either marking as the minimum you want on a food-contact stainless container, and be more interested in whether the interior is bare and how the seam is made.
Should a Prop 65 warning stop me buying?
Not on its own. OEHHA is explicit that a warning does not mean the product is unsafe or violates a standard. Use it as a prompt to find out which chemical and which component, not as a verdict.
Are bamboo-fibre containers really a problem?
They are melamine-formaldehyde plastic with bamboo filler, and the bamboo filler has never been authorised for food contact in the EU. EU testing found formaldehyde migrating at 25 times the permitted level from bamboo-fibre cups. They remain legal to sell in the US. We would not choose them for food storage.
What about silicone bags and lids?
Silicone’s real advantage is that it is one material, so there is no separate gasket or valve hiding a second plastic. Ask whether the maker post-cures, ignore the pinch test, and accept that it will keep the smell of anything strongly spiced.
The bottom line
Buying a “non-toxic” container is not really a shopping decision. It is a disclosure decision. The container worth your money is the one whose maker will tell you, in writing, what is in the body, what is in the lid, and what is in the seal — and California has already made most of them write it down somewhere.
Find that page, read the parts separately, skip anything sold on absence claims, and stop reheating in plastic. That covers more real-world exposure than any upgrade you can buy.

How we put this together
We did not test containers in a laboratory, and we do not claim to have. What we did was read the primary documents: the text of the California statute rather than a summary of it, the Attorney General’s enforcement advisory, the manufacturers’ own published disclosures, the FDA’s guidance pages, the European Commission’s enforcement report, and the 2023 study in full context including its limitations.
Where a claim is contested, we said so. Where a number is from a laboratory rather than a kitchen, we said so. Product recommendations are based on the manufacturers’ own published materials disclosures and the wording of the current listings, cross-read against independent hands-on reviews for the failure modes that only show up after months of use. Every pick carries a named drawback, and we ran our own AB 1200 search on each of the three and published the result, including where it found nothing.
We have not photographed these products in our own kitchen, and we do not use stock images pretending otherwise.
