Most answers online are a quick yes. Then you open the manual that came with your air fryer, and it may say the opposite. We read what five air fryer makers actually tell their own customers about foil, and they do not agree.
Below: what each maker says, how to use foil safely, what the research says about aluminum in food, and what to use when foil is the wrong tool.
How we put this together: we read the makers' manuals and support pages, the food-safety agencies and the published studies listed at the end, plus Amazon listings and buyer review summaries checked with a US delivery address on October 4, 2026. We have not tested these products ourselves.
The short answer
- Usually yes, if your manual allows it and you follow four rules: put food on the foil so it cannot lift, never preheat with foil alone in the basket, keep it smaller than the basket floor so the holes around the edge stay open, and keep acidic or salty-marinated food off it.
- Check your manual first. Cosori and Ninja allow foil with food on top. Philips, Instant's Vortex manual and KitchenAid say keep it out of the basket.
- Tin foil, silver foil and aluminum foil are the same thing in a US kitchen today: household foil is aluminum.
- For saucy, acidic or sticky food, a reusable silicone liner does the job foil does badly. Our pick is below.

Instead of foil, every day
PINTAUR Square Silicone Air Fryer Liners, 2 pack
Reusable, shaped like a bowl so there is no loose edge for the fan to catch, and fine with sauces and marinades. Rated to 450°F by the seller. Fits most 5 to 6.5 quart baskets.

Round baskets, 4 to 5.3 qtDual-basket air fryersReynolds Heavy Duty foilWhat happens when you put foil in an air fryer?
An air fryer is a small convection oven. A heating element and a fan sit at the top, and the fan drives hot air around the basket and through the holes in the plate at the bottom. That moving air is what crisps food on every side. Foil changes it in three ways:
- It can block the air. Foil that covers the whole plate stops air coming through the holes. The underside of the food steams instead of browning, and Instant's Vortex Slim manual warns that covering the basket with foil makes the appliance overheat.
- It can fly. The fan is strong. A piece of foil with nothing on it, or a loose corner, can lift into the heating element. Philips warns it can be pulled in and start to burn.
- It can touch the element. Foil folded up high, or wrapped loosely over the top of a dish, sits closer to the heat than the food does.
None of this means foil is dangerous in itself. It means foil in an air fryer needs to stay flat, weighed down and small. Foil in a microwave is a different story: Reynolds says it does not recommend foil in a microwave at all, because it can spark.
What air fryer makers say about foil
This is the part most answers skip. Here is what each maker tells its own customers, in its manual or on its support pages:

Two makers allow foil with food on top. Three say keep it out of the basket.
Swipe the table sideways on a phone.
| Maker | Foil in the basket? | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Philips | Not recommended | Covering the basket bottom cuts airflow and cooking performance, and foil with no food on it can be pulled into the heating element and burn. (Philips support page) |
| Instant (Vortex) | No | Do not cover the basket or any part of the appliance with foil; it can overheat. Food can go straight on the tray. (Vortex Slim manual) |
| KitchenAid and Whirlpool | No, not in a countertop basket | Foil blocks airflow and cooks unevenly. In a range with an air fry mode, foil can line a sheet on a lower rack to catch drips, with space left under the basket. (KitchenAid and Whirlpool help pages) |
| Cosori | Yes, with conditions | Fine if the food sits on top so it cannot lift into the element, and it never blocks the airflow. (Cosori FAQ) |
| Ninja | Yes, in its own recipe | The AF100-series owner's guide has a baked apple recipe that puts foil on the crisper plate, under the food. (Ninja owner's guide) |
If your manual says nothing about foil, follow the strictest rules on this page: food on top, edges low, holes open. If it says no, believe it: the maker knows where its heating element and fan sit.

How to use foil in an air fryer the right way

Small, weighed down, and with open holes all the way round.
- Check the manual using the table above. If it says no, stop here and use one of the alternatives below.
- Tear a piece smaller than the crisper plate. Leave a border of open holes on every side, about a finger wide.
- Fold the edges up into a low tray. It catches drips and keeps marinade off the plate, without rising toward the element.
- Preheat first, then add the foil with the food already on it. Never run the air fryer with an empty sheet of foil inside.
- Keep it flat and low. Do not wrap foil loosely over the top of the food. If a recipe needs a cover, crimp it tightly around the dish so the fan cannot catch it.
- Let it cool before you lift it out. The foil holds hot fat. Lift it with tongs, then wipe the plate.
Thicker foil is easier here. It holds the shape of a folded tray and is less likely to tear when you shake the basket. If you buy foil for this, heavy duty is the kind to get.

If you use foil
Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil, 12 in x 130 sq ft
Heavy duty foil, sold and shipped by Amazon. Thick enough to fold into a basket-sized tray that keeps its shape. One roll lasts a long time at air fryer sizes.
Good for: potatoes, vegetables, fish without lemon, and anything that drips fat or sugar onto the plate.
The drawback: boxes sometimes arrive crushed, which makes the roll hard to unwind. Nearly half of the buyers who mention ease of use complain about it. And like any plain foil, food can stick to it, so brush it with a little oil first.
See Reynolds Heavy Duty on AmazonPrefer pieces you do not have to tear? Reynolds also sells pre-cut pop-up foil sheets, 14 by 10.25 inches each. They are bigger than most basket floors, so fold them down to size, and buyers are split on whether they are thick enough.
Can you put foil pans or trays in an air fryer?
Yes, under the same rules. A foil pan has to fit with a gap all the way round so air can move past it, sit well below the heating element, and have food in it so it stays put. A small loaf or round pan in a large basket is fine. A pan that fills the whole basket is the same problem as a sheet of foil over the whole plate.
For a ready meal in a foil tray, follow the oven directions on the package, check the tray fits with room to spare, and take off any loose foil or cardboard lid unless it is crimped on tightly.
You will also find disposable "foil air fryer liners", small bowls of foil backed with paper. We looked at the best-rated one on Amazon and did not include it: buyers repeatedly report liners folding over the food in the airflow, and some report them catching fire. A sheet of heavy duty foil folded into a tray, or a silicone liner, does the same job with less risk.
Is aluminum foil toxic? What the studies found
Foil is not toxic to touch or to cook on now and then. The real question is how much aluminum moves from the foil into your food, and the answer depends on what the food is.
- The safety limit. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) set a tolerable weekly intake of 1 mg of aluminum per kg of body weight. That is about 70 mg a week for a 154 lb (70 kg) adult.
- Most of us already get half of it. Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) says most adults and teenagers already take in about half that limit from ordinary food, before any foil.
- Acid and salt pull aluminum out. In a 2020 study, beef, chicken and fish baked in foil at 356°F for an hour picked up as much as about 40 mg of aluminum per kg of food, while the same foods baked without foil had too little to detect. Seasoning with salt, oil and lemon raised the amount, mostly in the fish and chicken. A 2019 study baked eleven foods in five brands of foil at 428°F and found that acidic, salty marinades raised the transfer sharply, up to about 45 mg per kg in marinated duck.
- In real people, the effect was small. In a 2023 study, eleven healthy adults ate meals prepared or stored in aluminum foil containers for ten days. The aluminum in their urine rose by about 8%, and it went back to normal when they stopped.
- Who should be careful. The US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry notes that some people with kidney disease build up aluminum in their bodies. If that is you, it makes sense to skip foil for cooking, and to ask your doctor about aluminum more generally.
To put the worst case in numbers (our arithmetic, not the study's): a 5 oz (150 g) piece of fish at the highest level in the 2020 study holds about 6 mg of aluminum. That is roughly a tenth of a 154 lb adult's weekly limit, on top of what normal food already provides. One portion now and then is not a problem. A salty or lemony dinner cooked on foil every night is the habit worth dropping.
None of these studies used an air fryer. The two baking studies used ovens at temperatures close to an air fryer's, which is the closest evidence there is. BfR's practical advice fits an air fryer too: do not put acidic or salty food such as tomatoes, apples or marinated fish on uncoated foil, and do not store acidic or salty leftovers in it. Even Reynolds tells its customers to avoid highly acidic foods with foil, though it puts that down to taste.

Sticky, salty glazes are where a silicone liner beats foil.
For acidic, salty or sticky food
PINTAUR Square Silicone Air Fryer Liners, 2 pack (5 to 6.5 qt)
Food-grade silicone, BPA-free, rated to 450°F and dishwasher safe, according to the seller. Number one in Amazon's deep fryer parts and accessories best sellers when we checked. Also sold in a round size for 4 to 5.3 qt baskets and a size for dual-basket air fryers.
Good for: marinated chicken, tomato or citrus sauces, glazes, cheese, and anyone who uses a liner every day.
The drawback: smell. More buyers who mention odor complain than praise it, mostly about a smell or smoke the first few times it heats up. Wash it and run it once empty in a well-ventilated kitchen before cooking. Size is the other complaint: measure the top of your basket before you order, and check the models the listing says it does not fit. Brands rarely say how their silicone was cured; we cover that question in our guide to air fryer liners.
See the PINTAUR liners on AmazonFoil, parchment or silicone: which for which food?
Each one has a job. Often the best answer is nothing at all, because the basket is built to crisp food on bare metal.
Swipe the table sideways on a phone.
| Food | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fries, wings, breaded food | Nothing. Straight on the plate | They need air underneath to crisp. A liner tends to soften the bottom. |
| Potatoes, vegetables | Foil tray or nothing | Foil catches oil and seasoning; no acid involved. |
| Fish | Parchment or foil (no lemon on foil) | Stops delicate fish sticking. Add lemon after cooking if you use foil. |
| Tomato, citrus or vinegar marinades | Silicone liner or parchment | Acid pulls aluminum out of foil and can pit it. |
| Sticky glazes, honey, cheese | Silicone liner | Peels off clean and goes in the dishwasher. |
| Reheating leftovers | Nothing, or silicone | Short and simple; no need to line. |
| Baking a small cake or bread | A metal pan that fits with a gap | Needs walls; follow the same airflow rules. |
Parchment paper is the closest swap for foil and the one people ask about most. The rules are the same: food on top, never during an empty preheat, and stay under the temperature printed on the box. Perforated air fryer paper lets more air through than a plain sheet. We cover paper liners, holes and the FDA's PFAS story in are air fryer liners safe?, and which parchment to buy in our PFAS-free parchment paper guide.

Questions people ask
Can you put foil in a Ninja air fryer?
Yes, at least for the AF100 series: Ninja's own owner's guide for it includes a recipe that puts foil on the crisper plate under the food. Keep it smaller than the plate, put food on it, and do not preheat with it. For other Ninja models, check that model's guide.
Can you put foil on the bottom of the air fryer basket?
Only a piece smaller than the plate, with food on it. Covering the whole bottom blocks the holes the hot air has to pass through, so food steams instead of crisping, and Instant warns it can overheat the appliance.
What happens if you put aluminum foil in an air fryer?
Used well, nothing bad: it catches drips and makes cleanup easier. Used badly, it blocks airflow and leaves soggy food, or a loose piece lifts into the heating element and scorches or burns.
Can I wrap chicken in foil in an air fryer?
You can, but it will steam rather than crisp, and the wrap must be crimped tight so the fan cannot catch a loose edge. If the chicken is marinated in something acidic or salty, a silicone liner is the better choice.
Is tin foil the same as aluminum foil?
In US kitchens today, yes. Real tin foil was replaced by aluminum decades ago, and the name stuck. Silver foil means the same thing.
Can I cook a ready meal in a foil tray in an air fryer?
Usually, if the tray fits with a gap all round and sits well below the heating element. Follow the package's oven directions and remove any loose lid.
Can you put foil in a toaster oven or an air fryer oven?
It depends on the model, so check its manual. The same rules apply: food on top of the foil, and nothing covering the heating elements or the vents. We compare toaster ovens in our non-toxic air fryer toaster oven guide.
Which is healthier, aluminum foil or parchment paper?
For acidic or salty food, parchment, because acid and salt pull aluminum out of foil. For plain vegetables or potatoes, either is fine for healthy adults. A silicone liner avoids both questions for everyday use.
Does aluminum foil give off toxins when heated?
Not as fumes. Aluminum melts at about 1,220°F, far above any air fryer setting, so foil does not burn or give off fumes in normal use. What changes is how much aluminum moves into the food, and acid, salt and long cooking times raise it.
What can I use instead of foil in an air fryer?
Nothing at all for most foods, a reusable silicone liner, parchment or perforated air fryer paper, or a small metal pan that fits with a gap around it.
Can I spray cooking spray on the foil?
Yes. A light coat of oil on the foil helps stop food sticking. Spray it before the foil goes into the basket.
