OXO Good Grips 11-Inch Balloon Whisk
Polished stainless wires and a size that suits most bowls. It has more Amazon ratings than any other whisk we looked at.
See the OXO balloon whisk on AmazonThe drawback: the wires are bare steel. OXO's own comparison chart on the listing does not mark this one safe for nonstick pans.
Whisking in a nonstick pan? OXO 11-inch silicone balloon whisk. Bread dough? King Arthur dough whisk.
The short answer
One 11-inch (28 cm) stainless steel balloon whisk covers eggs, cream, batters and dressings in a bowl. If you also whisk sauces inside nonstick or coated pans, get a silicone-coated whisk for that job. Pan makers disagree here: T-fal tells owners to keep whisks off its nonstick, while Calphalon and Le Creuset allow metal whisks on some of their lines. The manual for your own pan is the rule that counts.
We read the Amazon listings for the best-selling whisks and the use and care pages of five cookware and utensil makers, then kept seven whisks. For each one we noted what the wires are made of, whether the maker says it is safe on nonstick, and how it should be washed. We have not tested these whisks ourselves, so every claim below comes from the maker or the listing.

Which whisk for which job: balloon, French, flat, ball and dough
Most kitchens need one good balloon whisk. Buy other shapes only for jobs you do often.
| Type | What it looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Balloon | Wide, rounded head of thin, flexible wires. | Whipping cream and egg whites, beating eggs, mixing batter in a bowl. |
| French | Narrower and longer, with stiffer wires set closer together. | Sauces, custards and gravy in a saucepan, where a wide head won't fit. |
| Flat (roux) | A few flat loops that lie against the pan. | Roux, pan gravy and sauces in a skillet. It reaches into the edge of the pan. |
| Ball | Separate straight wires, each with a small ball on the end. | Quick mixing in jars and deep cups. No loops to trap batter. |
| Dough | One thick wire bent into loops, on a wooden handle. | Stiff bread, pizza and sourdough dough that would clog a balloon whisk. |
| Mini | A small balloon or French whisk, 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm). | One egg, a cup of dressing, a mug of cocoa. |

Left to right: balloon, French, flat and Danish dough whisk.
Balloon whisk: the one to own first
A balloon whisk does most of what home cooks ask of a whisk. Its wide head pulls air into cream and egg whites, and it mixes pancake batter or a vinaigrette. An 11-inch (28 cm) whisk suits a standard mixing bowl, and a smaller one is easier in a narrow bowl.

Our quick pick: stainless balloon
OXO Good Grips 11-inch balloon whisk
Good for: eggs, whipped cream, batter and dressings in a bowl.
Why it is here: it has the most ratings of any whisk we found, about 23,000 at 4.8 stars, and Amazon marks it as Amazon's Choice. The listing describes polished stainless steel wires and a soft, non-slip handle shaped to sit in your palm. OXO's comparison chart on the same listing ticks it as dishwasher safe.
What to know: the listing doesn't give a steel grade.
The drawback: OXO's own chart leaves the nonstick column blank for this whisk and ticks it only for the silicone and nylon ones. Use it in bowls, or in stainless or bare cast iron pans. For enameled cast iron, Le Creuset recommends silicone or wood.
See the OXO balloon whisk on AmazonFlat whisk: for gravy and roux in a skillet
A balloon whisk doesn't reach well into the corner where the base of a pan meets the side, and that is where flour lumps hide. A flat whisk lies against the base and gets into that edge. If you make gravy or white sauce often, it is worth having.

Best flat whisk
OXO Good Grips sauce and gravy whisk
Good for: pan gravy, roux and sauces in a skillet or saute pan.
Why it is here: OXO describes an angled head and a long handle that reach into the edges of pans, with stainless wires and a flat coiled design. It is dishwasher safe, and Amazon itself is the seller.
What to know: at 9.7 inches (25 cm) long, it is built for pans, not for whipping in a bowl.
The drawback: the wires are bare stainless and the listing makes no nonstick claim, so treat it like any metal whisk in a coated pan.
See the OXO flat whisk on AmazonShort on drawer space
A full-size balloon whisk won't lie flat in a shallow drawer. A folding whisk does, and this one doubles as a flat whisk.

Best for a small drawer
Joseph Joseph Twist 2-in-1 whisk
Good for: small kitchens, and anyone who wants one whisk for bowls and nonstick pans.
Why it is here: a twist of the handle turns it from a balloon whisk into a flat one, and it folds flat to store. The listing says the wires are silicone-coated steel, heat-resistant to 392°F (200°C), suitable for nonstick cookware and dishwasher safe. Amazon is the seller.
What to know: a folding whisk has moving parts, so it is not as rigid as a fixed balloon whisk.
The drawback: the heat limit is lower than a bare steel whisk, so don't leave it resting in a hot pan.

You also need a sturdy bowl. Stainless bowls are light, don't chip and resist stains. If you bake often, a hand mixer saves your arm on meringue and cream; see our hand mixer guide. For scraping the bowl clean, the spatula picks are matched to each pan type.

Pairs well: stainless mixing bowls
Cuisinart 3-piece stainless mixing bowl set with lids
Good for: whisking eggs and cream, mixing batter, and storing leftovers in the fridge.
Why it is here: three stainless bowls of 1.5, 3 and 5 quarts (about 1.4, 2.8 and 4.7 liters) with lids, sold by Amazon and backed by a lifetime warranty, according to the listing.
What to know: Cuisinart says to skip the microwave with these bowls. The listing also disagrees with itself on washing: the bullets say dishwasher safe, the details table says hand wash. Hand washing is the safe bet.
The drawback: the listing is not consistent on whether all three bowls come with lids. Check the photos before you buy.
See the Cuisinart bowl set on AmazonCan you use a metal whisk in a nonstick pan? What pan makers say
Pan makers set their own rules, and some name whisks. The rules also change from one product line to the next.
| Maker | What its own care pages say about whisks |
|---|---|
| T-fal (Tefal) | Its US use and care leaflet says even its metal-safe nonstick lines take most metal utensils "with the exception of whisks, knives" and other sharp tools. Tefal's Australian care page says not to use knives and whisks on nonstick pans. |
| Calphalon | Depends on the line. Calphalon says its Premier ceramic nonstick can "withstand metal whisk, spoon and spatula use." For its Classic nonstick it says not to use metal utensils. |
| Le Creuset | On its toughened nonstick, metal tools and balloon whisks "may be used with care" but not scraped hard. For enameled cast iron it recommends silicone, wooden or other heat-resistant tools. |
| GreenPan | Its US care page says softer tools like silicone and wood are gentler on the pan and help the coating last longer. It does not mention whisks. |
| OXO (whisk maker) | Says its silicone whisks are safe for nonstick, ceramic and metal cookware. It makes no such claim for its bare stainless whisks. |
Check your pan's manual. If it says no whisks, or no metal at all, use a silicone-coated whisk. Calphalon, Le Creuset and GreenPan all name silicone as the gentler choice on their coatings; T-fal's leaflet names wood or plastic for most of its nonstick.
Or whisk in a bowl and pour it in. If you are still choosing a pan, our nonstick pan guide lists what each maker says about its coating.

Best for nonstick pans
OXO Good Grips 11-inch silicone balloon whisk
Good for: pan sauces, scrambled eggs and gravy in nonstick or ceramic-coated pans.
Why it is here: OXO's listing says it is safe for nonstick cookware, and its description says nonstick, ceramic and metal cookware. It is the same shape and size as our quick pick, with the same soft handle, and it is dishwasher safe.
What to know: OXO says the silicone head is high-heat resistant but gives no temperature on the listing. Want two sizes? OXO also sells a 9- and 11-inch (23 and 28 cm) silicone whisk set.
The drawback: silicone-coated wires are thicker than bare steel, and thicker wires usually whip cream and egg whites more slowly.
See the OXO silicone whisk on AmazonSilicone or stainless steel: which whisk is better?
Steel whips faster, since thin wires cut through cream and egg whites with less drag. In coated pans, use silicone: Calphalon, Le Creuset and GreenPan point owners to silicone or wood. If you own nonstick pans, you will probably want one of each.
Most silicone whisks are silicone over a wire frame, which keeps the loops springy. Joseph Joseph says so for the Twist; OXO's listing doesn't say what is under the silicone. For the safety question, see is silicone safe for cooking. If a coating starts to tear and show the wire, the whisk is no longer doing its job on a nonstick pan, so replace it.
Best dough whisk for bread and pizza
A Danish dough whisk is one thick wire bent into loops on a wooden handle. It mixes stiff flour-and-water dough without the dough balling up inside the wires, which is what happens with a balloon whisk. Bakers use it to mix sourdough and no-knead dough before folding.

A dough whisk pulls through sticky dough that would clog a balloon whisk.

Best for bread dough
King Arthur Baker's Dough Whisk
Good for: sourdough, pizza and no-knead bread; thick cookie dough.
Why it is here: King Arthur names the steel, 18/8 stainless. The listing says the single loop will not bend during heavy mixing and the beechwood handle is sealed to keep moisture out. It measures about 13 inches (33 cm).
What to know: hand wash only. For what 18/8 means next to other grades, see our guide to stainless steel grades.
The drawback: it has far fewer ratings than the budget pick, about 150, and the Amazon seller is a reseller rather than King Arthur.

Budget dough whisk
ORBLUE Danish dough whisk
Good for: anyone who wants to try a dough whisk before spending more.
Why it is here: it is one of the top-selling dough whisks, with about 6,000 ratings at 4.8 stars, and the brand sells it directly.
What to know: the listing says the wire is 201 stainless steel, a lower-nickel grade than the 18/8 King Arthur uses. It says to wash it in warm soapy water and dry it, and gives no dishwasher guidance.
The drawback: the listing calls the handle oak in one place and rubberwood in another, so we can't tell you which it is.
See the ORBLUE dough whisk on AmazonWhat size whisk do you need?
Match the whisk to the bowl. A whisk should reach the bottom of the bowl with its handle still above the rim. As a rough guide: 8 inches (20 cm) for a single egg or a mug, 10 to 11 inches (25 to 28 cm) for a standard mixing bowl, and 12 inches (30 cm) for a big batch of batter or a stockpot of gravy.

Best value set
NileHome 3-piece stainless whisk set
Good for: covering three bowl sizes at once, or a first kitchen.
Why it is here: on November 2, 2026 it was the number one seller in Amazon's whisk category. You get 8, 10 and 12-inch (20, 25 and 30 cm) whisks with stainless wires and stainless handles, and the brand says they can go in the dishwasher.
What to know: NileHome describes the steel as food grade but doesn't give a grade.
The drawback: the handles are bare metal with no soft grip, and like any bare steel whisk it isn't one for coated pans.
See the NileHome set on AmazonHow to clean a whisk and keep it from rusting
- Rinse it straight away. Batter and egg dry hard inside the loops. Swishing the whisk in warm soapy water before food sets does most of the work.
- Follow the label for the dishwasher. The OXO, Joseph Joseph and NileHome listings say dishwasher safe. The King Arthur dough whisk is hand wash only.
- Dry it head down. The weak spot on any whisk is where the wires go into the handle. Hang it or stand it handle up so water runs off the wires instead of into that joint.
- Check coated wires. If the silicone on a coated whisk splits and shows the wire, stop using it in nonstick pans.
- Oil wooden handles now and then. A dough whisk handle that looks pale and dry takes a little food-grade mineral oil.

Hang whisks head down so water runs off the wires, not into the handle.
What we left out and why
- Unbranded silicone whisks whose listings say nothing about the wire core or a heat limit.
- Rotary and semi-automatic push whisks. They are a different tool, and the best sellers had lower ratings than the whisks above.
- Bamboo matcha whisks. They are made only for whisking matcha tea, which is a separate buying decision.
- Electric whisks. If you want power, a hand mixer does more; see our hand mixer guide.
- Premium chef's whisks sold mainly through their own sites, which we couldn't check against a current Amazon listing.
Questions people ask
What is the best all-purpose whisk?
For most kitchens, an 11-inch (28 cm) stainless steel balloon whisk. It handles eggs, cream, batter and dressings in a standard bowl. Our pick is the OXO Good Grips 11-inch balloon whisk.
Is a silicone whisk better than stainless steel?
Only in coated pans. Stainless whips faster. In nonstick and ceramic-coated pans, silicone is the safer choice; Calphalon, Le Creuset and GreenPan name silicone or wood as the gentler tools.
Can I use a metal whisk in a nonstick pan?
Only if your pan's maker allows it. T-fal says no whisks on its nonstick, even on its metal-safe lines. Calphalon allows metal whisks on its Premier ceramic nonstick, and Le Creuset allows them with care on its toughened nonstick. When in doubt, use silicone.
What is a French whisk used for?
Sauces, custards and gravy in a saucepan. It is narrower than a balloon whisk, with stiffer wires, so it fits into a pot and mixes thoroughly without whipping in much air.
What is the difference between a whisk and a whip?
In a home kitchen they mean the same thing. Restaurant supply catalogs often say whip, as in piano whip or French whip, for what most cooks call a whisk.
Can I use a hand mixer in a nonstick pan?
Le Creuset says hand-held electric or battery beaters should not be used on its toughened nonstick surface. Mix in a bowl and pour into the pan instead.
Do you need a mini whisk?
Only if you often whisk small amounts. A 6 to 8 inch (15 to 20 cm) whisk fits a mug, a jar of dressing or a single egg in a small bowl, where a full-size whisk splashes.
Can I use a metal whisk in an enameled Dutch oven?
Le Creuset, the best-known maker of enameled cast iron, recommends silicone, wooden or other heat-resistant tools on its enamel and says never to use sharp metal utensils that may mark it. A silicone-coated whisk is the safer choice there.
What size whisk is best?
10 to 11 inches (25 to 28 cm) for a standard mixing bowl. Go smaller for a single egg or a mug, and larger for big batches.
What whisk is best for whipped cream?
A balloon whisk with thin stainless wires. Its wide head moves the most air through the cream with each stroke.
How we put this together
On November 2, 2026 we pulled the best-selling whisks from Amazon's US product data and checked each one's material, size, seller, stock and category. We then read the care pages and use and care leaflets of T-fal, Tefal, Calphalon, Le Creuset and GreenPan for their rules on whisks and metal utensils, and OXO's pages for its silicone whisks. The OXO 11-inch balloon whisk is our quick pick because it has the most ratings of the whisks we checked and fits most bowls. We did not test any whisk ourselves, and no brand saw this page before it went up.
