Pair of tan KitchenAid ribbed silicone oven mitts

Our quick pick

KitchenAid Ribbed Soft Silicone Oven Mitts

Silicone outside, a polyester lining and a cotton cuff, rated to 500°F (260°C) by the maker. In Prudent Reviews' test a KitchenAid ribbed mitt held a 440°F (227°C) handle for the full 30 seconds and kept steam out. Prudent didn't name the color, and we couldn't open its link to confirm it is this listing.

See the KitchenAid silicone mitts on Amazon

The drawback: the listing says wipe clean only and gives no warranty. Prudent also found the ribs trap crumbs.

For machine-washable silicone, see the HOMWE mitts. For a flat pad, see the KitchenAid pot holders.

The short answer

Get a silicone mitt with a long cuff, and keep it dry. Mitts with a full silicone shell held a hot handle longer than cotton ones at America's Test Kitchen and Prudent Reviews, and kept water and steam out at Prudent. The heat number on the label told us little, and a damp mitt of any kind can scald. An oven mitt is an insulated cover for your hand and wrist, sold as a mitten, a five-finger glove, a pincer or a short mini mitt.

We did not test these mitts. Every number below names its source.

Cotton or silicone: what the tests found

America's Test Kitchen (ATK) heated a cast-iron skillet in a 400°F (204°C) oven for an hour, bringing the handle to about 320°F (160°C), and timed how long testers could hold it. ATK's silicone picks held for 18 to 23 seconds. Its cotton and synthetic ones held for 5 to 13.5.

Prudent Reviews used a handle near 440°F (227°C), then held each mitt under a tap and over steam. Its silicone mitts kept water out and wiped clean. An all-cotton mitt leaked when dunked. Prudent's silicone shells held 25 to 30 seconds and its all-cotton mitt 19. The exception was its top pick, the MagMitt, a cotton canvas mitt with a silicone palm, which held the full 30 and sells from the maker's own site. The UK group Which? draws the same line in its buying advice, calling silicone waterproof and cotton and aramid gloves poor with hot liquid.

Material What the tests found What to watch
Silicone outside, cotton or polyester inside Held longer than cotton at ATK. Kept water and steam out at Prudent. Some are wipe-clean only. Thick ones are stiff.
Cotton and cotton blends Shorter hold times at ATK. Let liquid through at Prudent. Which? warns cotton is poor with hot liquid. Can scald when damp.
Aramid gloves (Kevlar, Nomex) Mixed at ATK. Steam got through at 15 to 20 seconds at Prudent. Not waterproof. Keep them dry.

Gray ARCLIBER quilted fabric oven mitts

Fabric pick

ARCLIBER Quilted Oven Mitts

Good for: dry jobs like cookie sheets and cake pans.

Why we picked it: quilted cloth mitts the listing describes as a cotton blend, 13 in (33 cm) long, rated to 450°F (232°C) by the seller.

What to know: the seller says they resist flames for 10 seconds. That is its claim, not a test.

The drawback: spot clean only, because washing weakens the flame retardant coating, which the listing never names.

See the ARCLIBER fabric mitts on Amazon

Heat ratings vs real hold time

In Prudent Reviews' test, the maker's heat rating predicted little. Mitts rated 600°F (316°C) and 932°F (500°C) gave out at 20 seconds on a 440°F (227°C) handle. Three rated 450 to 500°F (232 to 260°C) held the full 30.

Mitt (8 of the 10 Prudent tested) Maker's rating Held at 440°F (227°C)
MagMitt (cotton, silicone palm) 500°F (260°C) 30 seconds (full test)
HOMWE (silicone) 450°F (232°C) 30 seconds (full test)
KitchenAid Ribbed (silicone) 500°F (260°C) 30 seconds (full test)
Ove Glove (aramid glove) 540°F (282°C) 20 seconds
KitchenAid Gourmet (cotton, silicone grid) 600°F (316°C) 20 seconds
Grill Armor (aramid glove) 932°F (500°C) 20 seconds
Caraway (all cotton) Not given 19 seconds
Our Place (cotton, silicone grip) 550°F (288°C) 18 seconds

Don't compare seconds across outlets. ATK's handle was about 320°F (160°C), Prudent's about 440°F (227°C). Which? measured heat inside the glove over a 302°F (150°C) tray instead of timing a hold. ATK and Prudent link each mitt to a store page, but neither says which color or version it tested, so treat results as a guide to the type.

We found no standard written for kitchen mitts sold in the US. EN 407 (Europe) and ASTM F1060 (North America) are heat tests for work gloves. OXO's EU paperwork for its mitts lists EN 407, and no other listing here names a standard.

Black Gorilla Grip silicone oven mitts

Highest heat claim

Gorilla Grip Silicone Oven Mitts

Good for: a full silicone shell if you don't mind hand washing.

Why it's here: it has the highest heat claim of the nine, 550°F (288°C), on a silicone shell with a cotton fill. Bon Appétit's mitt roundup names it, but we could not open that page, and no test we could read included it.

What to know: the listing says older packaging may show 484°F (251°C) and that new testing supports the higher number. It names no lab.

The drawback: hand wash only, and Gorilla Grip's own page says wash the outside only.

See the Gorilla Grip mitts on Amazon

Cast iron and Dutch ovens

ATK and Prudent both tested on a cast-iron handle, so their results fit this job best. Use a silicone mitt with a long cuff and set the pan down within a few seconds. Never leave a mitt or pad on a hot pan. ATK says silicone starts to break down after 30 seconds above 500°F (260°C). See our cast iron guide and Dutch oven picks.

OXO Good Grips silicone oven mitt in oat

Long, tapered cuff

OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt

Good for: reaching into a deep oven.

Why we picked it: ATK's favorite mitt was OXO's silicone mitt (model 11219700), which held a 320°F (160°C) handle for 22 seconds. ATK's buy link goes to this Oat listing, but it names a teal model, so we can't confirm the color tested.

What to know: 13 in (33 cm), tapered up the forearm. The listing gives no temperature and says machine washable.

The drawback: sold as one mitt, not a pair, and Prudent found its OXO mitt still damp a day after washing.

Wet mitts and steam burns

Never lift a hot pan with a damp mitt, pot holder or towel. Sentara Health's burn advice is to use dry mitts, because damp ones can heat up and scald.

In lab simulations, Oklahoma State University researchers found that finger pressure on the stitching let more heat through, with spots inside reaching 155°F (68°C), near the 160°F (71°C) at which they say second-degree burns can occur. The university's article adds that a wet mitt near a 350 to 400°F (177 to 204°C) oven could cause a third-degree burn in as little as a second, depending on the material.

Prudent also held each mitt over boiling water for up to 30 seconds. Its silicone mitts passed. The Ove Glove and Grill Armor gloves got hot at 15 to 20 seconds, and an all-cotton mitt at 15.

HOMWE long silicone oven mitts with a quilted cotton lining

Pick for steam and wet jobs

HOMWE Silicone Oven Mitts

Good for: draining pasta and lifting a roasting pan with juices.

Why we picked it: the seller calls the silicone shell waterproof and steam resistant, rated to 500°F (260°C), with a quilted cotton lining and machine washing. A HOMWE mitt passed Prudent's steam test.

What to know: Prudent's HOMWE was rated 450°F (232°C) and measured 14.75 in (37 cm), while this listing says 500°F (260°C) and 13.7 in (35 cm), so Prudent likely tested a different version.

The drawback: Prudent found the thick silicone limits how well you can move your hand.

Mitten, glove, pincer or mini: which style

  • Mitten. Fingers together. Most cover, least finger control.
  • Five-finger glove. Better grip on thin handles, but the aramid gloves tested let steam through sooner.
  • Pincer. A thumb flap that clamps a handle. We found no test data on these.
  • Mini mitt. Fingers and palm only, for quick grabs.
  • Double mitt. Two mitts joined by a strip. ATK found no benefit.

Two Ove Glove five-finger oven gloves

Five-finger glove

The Ove Glove

Good for: small handles, oven racks and grill grates, kept dry.

Why we picked it: a pair of five-finger gloves rated 540°F (282°C) in the brand text, which lists Kevlar and Nomex outside and a cotton inner layer.

What to know: one bullet says 100% cotton instead. The care sheet we found mentions aramid fibers, says machine wash warm, and warns that flammable buildup can reduce heat resistance.

The drawback: the care sheet says it is not waterproof and must not be used wet, and steam got through in 15 to 20 seconds at Prudent. Prudent tested a single glove, and we link a pair.

Two short KitchenAid mini oven mitts in tan and beige

Mini mitt

KitchenAid Beacon Mini Oven Mitts

Good for: quick grabs where you don't need wrist cover.

Why we picked it: two short mitts, 5.5 x 8 in (14 x 20 cm), rated to 500°F (260°C) and machine washable.

What to know: the listing calls it 100% cotton in one place and polyester in another.

The drawback: no wrist cover, and the listing says no warranty.

Pot holders: when a pad beats a mitt

A pot holder is a flat pad. It's quick for a lid or a casserole dish, but your wrist is bare. ATK's favorite pad was OXO's silicone pot holder, which held its hot skillet handle for 23 seconds. Our pot holder pick below has no outside test, so weigh it against ATK's OXO pad.

A pot holder is not a trivet. Our trivet guide compares silicone, cork, wood and metal ones.

Two tan KitchenAid silicone pot holders

Pot holder pick

KitchenAid Ribbed Soft Silicone Pot Holders

Good for: lids, pan handles and casserole dishes.

Why we picked it: silicone on one side and 100% cotton on the other, rated to 500°F (260°C).

What to know: the cotton side is still fabric, so keep it dry.

The drawback: wipe clean only, and the pad is small.

See the KitchenAid pot holders on Amazon

If you'd rather buy one box, the KEGOUU 6-piece set has two mitts, two pot holders and two towels. Its silicone is printed onto cotton, so treat it like fabric around water.

What is in a mitt, and is it safe?

We found no PFAS statement from any of the nine makers, on their Amazon listings or the maker pages we could reach. We also found no US rule that names oven mitts. OXO's own EU paperwork files its mitt silicone as non-food-contact.

A mitt has a shell (silicone or fabric), a lining (cotton, polyester or quilted fill) and stitching, where Oklahoma State's simulations found more heat came through.

The quilted lining inside a silicone mitt.

PFAS. Since January 2025, Minnesota has barred the sale of cookware and textile furnishings such as towels with intentionally added PFAS. The law does not name oven mitts, and its examples are not a full list. A 2022 Toxic-Free Future study found PFAS in 34 of 47 stain- or water-resistant products, none of them mitts.

Food grade and BPA-free. Gorilla Grip's Amazon listing says third-party tests found its mitts BPA-free and food safe. Its own site says food grade but names no lab and skips BPA. HOMWE puts BPA-free in its title. The FDA rule for rubber that touches food repeatedly (21 CFR 177.2600) does not mention mitts, and no listing here shows a test report, so food grade on these mitts is the seller's word.

Coatings and fillers. ARCLIBER mentions a coating but does not name it. You may read that white streaks when you pinch silicone mean fillers. We found no lab or regulator that backs that test. For silicone that does touch food, read is silicone safe for cooking?

What we could not verify

  • We could not confirm that any outlet tested the exact listing we link.
  • We found no PFAS statement from any of the nine makers.
  • We could not confirm who publishes the Ove Glove care sheet we quote.
  • No food-grade or BPA-free claim here names a lab. Neither does Gorilla Grip's jump from 484°F (251°C) to 550°F (288°C).
  • We could not read the Bon Appétit, Wirecutter or Good Housekeeping mitt articles.

How we chose

On November 3, 2026 we checked each Amazon listing's materials, care rules, seller and stock. The KitchenAid ribbed mitts lead because a KitchenAid ribbed mitt (color not stated) passed Prudent's heat and steam tests, and this listing is sold by Amazon.com with clear material details. No brand saw this page before it went up.

For the pans these mitts will lift, see our cookie sheet picks, Bundt pans and pizza stones and steels. For the tools, see non-toxic cooking utensils.

Questions people ask

Are silicone oven mitts better than cotton?

Yes for heat and water. Silicone mitts held a hot handle longer at America's Test Kitchen and kept water and steam out at Prudent Reviews. Which? also calls silicone waterproof. Cotton is fine for dry jobs, but it soaks up liquid, and a damp mitt can scald.

How hot can oven mitts get?

Our picks are rated by their makers from 450°F (232°C) to 550°F (288°C), and OXO's listing gives no number. Ratings did not predict hold time in Prudent's test, and ATK says silicone starts to break down after 30 seconds above 500°F (260°C). Set hot pans down quickly.

Why do some cooks use a towel instead of a mitt?

In Which?'s lab test a tea towel let through more heat than almost every glove. A damp one is worse. Sentara Health warns that hot cookware can heat the moisture in a potholder and cause a scald, and a towel holds water too.

Which is better, oven mitts or oven gloves?

Silicone mitts cover more and kept heat and steam out longer than the two aramid gloves in Prudent's test. Five-finger gloves grip thin handles and racks more easily, but the aramid gloves Prudent tested let steam through at 15 to 20 seconds. Choose gloves for dry, fiddly jobs.

Can you put silicone oven mitts in the washing machine?

Check the care line on each listing, because the makers disagree. HOMWE, OXO and the KEGOUU set say machine wash. The KitchenAid ribbed mitts and pot holders say wipe clean only, and Gorilla Grip says hand wash. Let any washed mitt dry fully before you use it.

When should you replace oven mitts?

None of the outlets we checked set a replacement schedule. Oklahoma State's simulations found more heat got through where fingers press on stitching, so check the thumb and finger seams. The Ove Glove care sheet warns that flammable buildup can lower heat resistance. Retire one that lets heat through sooner.

What oven mitts are best for small hands?

None of the tests we found measured fit for small hands, so go by the listings. The KitchenAid Beacon minis are 8 in (20 cm) long and leave the wrist bare. The OXO mitt is 13 in (33 cm), tapered up the forearm, per its listing.

Can you use an oven mitt or pot holder as a trivet?

No. ATK warns that silicone starts to break down after 30 seconds above 500°F (260°C), and a pad is meant for your hand, not the counter. Set hot pans on a trivet made for the job, such as the ones in our trivet guide.

Is silicone safe to use in the oven?

On a mitt, watch two numbers: the maker's heat rating, and ATK's warning that silicone starts to break down after 30 seconds above 500°F (260°C). OXO's EU paperwork treats mitt silicone as non-food-contact. For silicone bakeware and utensils that touch food, see our silicone safety article.
