Gloved hand spreading baking soda paste across the floor of an open oven with a red silicone spatula

Most of us put off cleaning the oven because of the smell. The classic sprays sting your eyes and send you round the house opening windows. You do have gentler options, and for most ovens the gentlest one is also the cheapest.

How we put this together: we read the labels and product pages of Easy-Off, Zep, Carbona, Bar Keepers Friend and Arm & Hammer, Zep's safety data sheet, Whirlpool and GE Appliances' oven-cleaning advice, and the National Library of Medicine's page on lye. Every quote was checked twice, word for word. We have not tested these products, and the photos show typical kitchen scenes, not test results.

The short answer

  • Gentlest: baking soda paste, left 20 minutes to overnight, wiped off with a vinegar spray.
  • Faster, no lye: a fume-free spray such as Easy-Off Fume Free, if your oven is not a convection model.
  • Heaviest grime: lye (caustic) cleaners, labeled corrosive. Gloves, ventilation, never in a self-cleaning oven.
  • Self-clean cycle: no chemicals, but hours of very high heat, smoke and odors. Ventilate, and move pet birds out.

Which oven cleaning method fits your oven?

If you have your oven's manual, start there: its rules beat any general advice, including ours. Then choose by grime and how much smell you can stand.

How to clean an oven with baking soda and vinegar

This is the slow, low-smell route both Whirlpool and Arm & Hammer describe. You need baking soda, water, white vinegar in a spray bottle, a spatula, a plastic scraper and old towels.

Hand spraying vinegar onto dried baking soda paste on an oven wall, small bubbles forming

1. Empty the oven

Let the oven cool, take out the racks, and lay towels under the door for drips.

2. Make the paste

Whirlpool mixes ½ cup baking soda with 3 tablespoons of water. For a very dirty oven, Arm & Hammer makes it as thick as cake icing.

3. Coat the oven

Spread it over the floor, sides and door. Arm & Hammer adds: “Avoid the heating elements.”

4. Wait

Whirlpool says: “Let it rest anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight depending on the dirtiness of your oven.”

5. Scrape and wipe

Lift the paste with a plastic scraper or non-scratch sponge. GE warns that “Abrasive sponges or scrubbers can scratch the oven interior.”

6. Spray with vinegar and wipe again

Mist the white film with vinegar (“If you use vinegar, baking soda will bubble,” Arm & Hammer notes) and wipe with a damp cloth until no paste is left.

For burnt-on spills on the oven floor

For stubborn spots, Whirlpool leaves a fresh layer of paste on them for 12 to 24 hours, then uses the plastic scraper.

Seven pound bag of Arm and Hammer baking soda

For the baking soda method

ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, 7 lb bag

Plain baking soda, the ingredient in Whirlpool's and Arm & Hammer's oven guides. A big bag covers a deep clean with plenty left over.

Good for: skipping spray cleaners altogether, and ovens whose manual rules out oven cleaners

The drawback: it is the slowest route: heavy grime means an overnight wait and real elbow work.

Fume-free oven cleaners: what “fume free” means on the can

On Easy-Off's own pages, “fume free” means no lye. The 24-ounce can cleans “with no lye or caustic fumes”, and both sizes say “No protective gloves required.”

It does not mean nothing needs care. The label still reads “CAUTION: EYE IRRITANT.” and “Contains Ethanolamine and Dipropylene Glycol Propyl Ether.” The ingredient list has potassium carbonate but no sodium hydroxide.

How to use it, per the label: spray a cold oven from 9 to 12 inches away. Wipe spots after 30 seconds; for a deep clean, close the door, wait two hours, then wipe with a wet sponge.

Check your oven first. The label says: “Do not use on microwave, convection, or continuous-cleaning ovens.” Keep it off the pilot light, heating elements, thermostats, aluminum and painted surfaces too. Not sure what kind of oven you have? Our guide to stove and oven types explains the differences.

Self-cleaning ovens: the brands disagree. Easy-Off says its fume-free formula “Can be used on self-cleaning ovens provided that the self-cleaning cycle is not used in combination with EASY-OFF® FUME FREE Oven Cleaner.” Whirlpool says “It is not advisable to use commercial oven cleaners or chemicals on self-cleaning ovens.” Your manual is the tie-breaker. If it says no cleaners, use baking soda.

Two cans of Easy-Off Fume Free oven cleaner

Our pick for a faster clean

Easy-Off Fume Free Oven Cleaner, 24 oz, 2-pack

Easy-Off's no-lye formula in the larger can. Two cans cover a deep clean and the spot cleaning after it.

Good for: regular, non-convection ovens and oven doors, when you want speed without lye

The drawback: the label rules out convection, microwave and continuous-cleaning ovens, it is still an eye irritant, and a deep clean means a two-hour wait.

Lye oven cleaners: what the labels and safety sheets say

The National Library of Medicine explains the word: “Sodium hydroxide is a very strong chemical. It is also known as lye and caustic soda.” Oven cleaners are on its list of products that contain it.

Easy-Off Heavy Duty is the classic example. Its label reads “DANGER: CORROSIVE.” and “CONTAINS SODIUM HYDROXIDE (LYE).”, then “WILL BURN EYES AND SKIN.” It tells you to “Use only with adequate ventilation.” and to “Wear long rubber gloves when using.”

Zep's heavy-duty foam uses a close cousin. Its 2018 safety data sheet lists potassium hydroxide, uses the signal word “Danger”, and carries the hazard line “H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.” Zep's product page adds: “Do not use in self-cleaning or continuous-cleaning ovens.”

When does lye make sense? For years of baked-on grease in a standard, non-self-cleaning oven, with windows open, gloves and eye protection on, and kids and pets away. Otherwise, try the fume-free spray or baking soda first. A vent fan helps; our range hood guide covers what a good one moves.

Two cans of Zep heavy-duty oven and grill cleaner

If you choose a heavy-duty cleaner

Zep Heavy-Duty Oven and Grill Cleaner, 19 oz, 2-pack

A thick foam that clings to oven walls. Zep says it is safe on stainless steel, porcelain and ceramic.

Good for: neglected standard ovens, used with full protection

The drawback: it is a caustic that the safety sheet says causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Gloves and eye protection, and never in a self-cleaning oven or on aluminum, chrome or painted surfaces.

The self-clean cycle: heat, smoke and fumes

A self-cleaning oven burns grime to ash. GE describes a cycle at temperatures “usually between 800–900°F” that “takes several hours to complete and leaves behind ash that you simply wipe away.” GE's view on safety: “Yes, self-cleaning functions are safe”, if your oven is designed for it.

Before you start, Whirlpool lists:

  • “Remove the oven racks, broiler pan, grid, cookware, and bakeware from the oven.” GE adds that some racks can stay in, so check your manual.
  • “Remove any foil from the oven.”
  • Wipe out loose grime first. Heavy soil means a longer cycle and more smoke.
  • “Do not let water, cleaner, or any other liquid enter slots on the door frame.”

Ventilation: Whirlpool says to “Keep the kitchen well-ventilated during the Self-Cleaning cycle to help eliminate heat, odors, and smoke.” GE says opening windows or running the hood helps with odors, “but it's not a requirement.” We would open a window anyway.

If you keep birds: Whirlpool warns that “The health of some birds is extremely sensitive to the fumes given off during the Self-Cleaning cycle. Exposure to the fumes may result in the death of certain birds.” Its advice: “Always move birds to another closed and well-ventilated room.”

Steam clean vs self-clean

Many newer ovens also have steam clean, which GE says “usually takes under an hour.” Whirlpool keeps self-clean for heavy, baked-on residue and says: “Choose steam clean for lighter spills and more frequent touch-ups, since it uses lower heat and a shorter cycle.”

How to clean oven racks

Two chrome oven racks soaking in soapy water in a bathtub on an old towel, with a scrub brush on the edge

Racks are easiest outside the oven. Whirlpool lines the bathtub with old towels so it does not scratch, covers the racks with hot water and ½ cup of dish soap, and lets them soak. “Soak for at least two hours or overnight, depending on the dirtiness of the racks.” Scrub with a stiff brush, rinse, and dry them well.

Gliding racks: GE says “Watch out for racks with ball bearings” and keep water and cleaner out of the sliding mechanisms.

No tub, or no patience for scrubbing? A bag kit soaks the racks for you. Carbona's says it “Cleans without harsh fumes or added fragrance” and is “Made with Baking Soda”. You seal up to two cold racks in the bag with the gel and leave them a few hours, out of reach of children and pets.

For racks

Carbona Oven Rack & Grill Cleaner Kit (bag and gloves)

Gel, a large bag and gloves in one box, and the kit says no scrubbing is required.

Good for: stainless steel or enamel oven racks and grill grates

The drawback: it takes two racks per bag and a few hours of waiting, and Carbona says not to use it on aluminum, plastic or damaged surfaces.

How to clean oven door glass

Hand wiping baking soda paste off the inside glass of an open oven door with a microfiber cloth

The inside of the door collects a brown film. Let it cool, then pick one:

  • Baking soda paste: Whirlpool spreads a baking soda and water paste on the glass and lets it sit for 20 minutes or longer. Then: “Any residual grease can be gently scraped away with a plastic scraper.”
  • Bar Keepers Friend: its maker spreads a powder-and-water paste on wet glass, leaves it one minute and wipes it off, using a scouring pad for tougher stains. “We also recommend wearing gloves.”

What about the grime between the two panes? Leave it, unless your manual shows how. Whirlpool says getting there usually means taking the door apart, “which is generally not recommended,” and Bar Keepers Friend warns that “disassembling your oven door could invalidate the warranty on your appliance.”

Two cans of Bar Keepers Friend powder cleanser

For the door glass

Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser, 12 oz, 2-pack

The powder from its maker's own oven-door glass guide, mixed into a paste.

Good for: the inside of the oven door, between deep cleans

The drawback: it is hands-on, one minute at a time, and the maker recommends gloves. We list it for door glass only, the use its oven guide covers.

Questions people ask

How often should you clean your oven?

GE says once or twice a year will do for most families, and four to five times a year if you cook daily.

Can you use oven cleaner on a self-cleaning oven?

Lye cleaners, no: Easy-Off Heavy Duty and Zep both say so. Easy-Off allows its fume-free formula if you do not run the cycle with it; Whirlpool advises against cleaners. Your manual decides.

Is oven cleaner toxic?

Lye cleaners are labeled corrosive and can burn eyes and skin. Fume-free sprays are labeled as eye irritants. If someone swallows oven cleaner or gets it in their eyes, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 in an emergency.

How do you clean an oven without scrubbing?

Let time do it: baking soda paste overnight, or a fume-free spray left two hours in a closed oven. For racks, a sealed bag kit.

Will Dawn and vinegar clean an oven?

In Whirlpool's guide, dish soap is for soaking the racks. Inside the oven it uses baking soda paste, then vinegar to wipe it off.

Is it safe to stay in the house during a self-clean cycle?

GE calls self-cleaning safe in ovens designed for it. Whirlpool says to keep the kitchen well-ventilated, and to move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room.

Can you use Easy-Off on a glass stove top?

Easy-Off's fume-free pages list ovens, oven doors, broilers, grills and stainless steel, not glass cooktops. For a glass top, see our glass stove top cleaning guide.

How do you clean a gas oven?

The same methods work. The Easy-Off label adds: do not spray the pilot light, electrical connections, heating elements or thermostats.
