A glass stove top looks great for about one dinner. Then a pot boils over, the sauce bakes into a brown ring, hard water leaves a cloudy haze, and a bread bag that brushed a warm burner turns into a shiny blob. The good news: almost all of it comes off, as long as you use the right tool in the right order and skip the few things that scratch the glass for good.
It works for glass-ceramic electric (smooth-top) cooktops and induction cooktops, and it is built from what Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Bosch, Haier and Maytag tell their own owners.
How we put this together: we read the cooktop care pages of seven stove makers, the labels and safety data sheets of the cleaners below, and their Amazon listings, checked with a US delivery address on October 6, 2026. We have not tested these cleaners ourselves. The photos show typical marks; they are not test results.
The short answer
- Every day: once the glass is cool, wipe it with a damp soft cloth and a little cooktop cleaner, then buff dry.
- Burnt-on food: rub in a cooktop cleaning cream, then lift what is left with a razor scraper held low against the glass. Polish off the haze.
- Melted sugar or plastic: the one exception. Stove makers say to remove it while the glass is still hot, wearing an oven mitt, or it can pit the surface.
- Never: steel wool, scouring powder, chlorine bleach, ammonia or window cleaner.
What you need: a ceramic cooktop cleaning cream, a non-scratch pad or microfiber cloth, a razor scraper, and baking soda for burnt spots.

Our quick pick
Weiman Glass & Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner Kit
A 10 oz heavy-duty cooktop cream, three non-scratch pads and a razor scraper: every step on this page in one box. Weiman is one of the two brands GE and Samsung name, and this kit was the top seller in Amazon's cooktop cleaner category when we checked. Wear glasses with the cream: its safety data sheet warns about eye damage.
See the Weiman kit on AmazonFind your problem first
Glass cooktop marks fall into a handful of types, and each has its own fix. Find what you see, try the gentle fix first, and only reach for the button if that is not enough.
Swipe the table sideways on a phone.
| What you see | What it is | Gentlest fix | If that is not enough |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smudges, fingerprints, light grease | Everyday cooking splatter | Damp microfiber cloth with a cooktop spray, then buff dry | Daily spray |
| Brown or black crust on a burner | Food or sauce that boiled over and baked on | Cooktop cream, then a razor scraper held low | Heavy-duty cream |
| Brown rings around a burner | Repeated small spills and pan-bottom grease | Cream and a non-scratch pad; scraper for the edges | Cleaner kit |
| Cloudy white haze or rings | Minerals left when water boils over and dries | Cooktop cream; Samsung also suggests baking soda and vinegar | Cleaner kit |
| Silver-grey streaks that look like scratches | Metal marks from sliding pans, or minerals | Cooktop cream, then buff. Real scratches do not wipe off | Cerama Bryte kit |
| Melted plastic or burnt sugar | A bag, spatula or syrup touched the hot glass | Scrape it off while the glass is still hot, with an oven mitt on | Razor scraper |
| White marks on induction glass | Starchy water that boiled over | Cleaner on, wait 10 minutes, then a low-angle scraper (LG) | BKF cooktop cleaner |
| Fine lines that you can feel | Scratches from grit, rough pan bases or abrasive pads | Bosch says they cannot be removed. Prevent new ones | No product fixes this |
Before you start: what every stove maker agrees on
- Controls off first. Whirlpool's instructions open with that line.
- A cream made for glass cooktops. GE recommends an approved cleaner such as Weiman or Cerama Bryte, Samsung names the same two brands, and Haier lists Cerama Bryte products.
- No steel wool, scouring powder, bleach or ammonia. The full list is further down.
- Sugar and melted plastic cannot wait. GE says they can pit the glass unless removed while still hot, and that damage is not covered by its warranty.
They disagree on two details, so check your own manual:
- Warm or cold? Whirlpool says the scraper works best while the cooktop is still warm but not hot, and recommends an oven mitt. Bosch says to wait until the glass is completely cool.
- Scraper angle. Whirlpool, GE, LG and Maytag say about 45 degrees. Bosch says a low angle such as 20 or 30 degrees, and warns that a higher angle may scratch the glass. If your manual does not say, start low.
How to clean a glass stove top every day, without streaks
Two minutes after cooking keeps the glass from needing the heavy steps below. Haier says that using cleaning cream after each use keeps the cooktop looking new and easy to clean.
Step 1: Let it cool and switch everything off
Wait until the glass is cool. Bosch says to let it cool completely; on induction the glass still takes heat from the pan.
Step 2: Wipe off crumbs and loose bits
Use a dry paper towel or a soft cloth. Grit left on the glass is what scratches it when you start rubbing.
Step 3: Clean with a cooktop spray or a little cream
Spray a cooktop cleaner or use a few drops of cream, and wipe with a damp microfiber cloth or non-scratch sponge. Whirlpool's blog also allows a nonabrasive sponge with diluted dish soap for light messes; LG says general kitchen detergent can damage its glass.
Step 4: Buff dry
Polish with a clean, dry cloth. Whirlpool's method is to let the cleaner dry to a white haze and then buff it away, which leaves the glass streak-free.

For the 2-minute daily wipe
Weiman Daily Cooktop Cleaner & Degreaser, 2 pack with microfiber cloth
Two spray bottles and a microfiber cloth. The listing says this degreaser is made for glass, ceramic and induction cooktops and needs no rinsing. It has the mildest safety data sheet on this page: no hazard classification.
Good for: daily wipes, fingerprints and light grease on glass and induction tops.
The drawback: it will not lift burnt-on crust or brown rings. The listing says it contains sodium hydroxide, so it is strongly alkaline: do not mix it with the acidic creams in the same wipe.
See the daily spray on AmazonHow to clean a burnt glass stove top

Work from gentle to strong and stop as soon as the glass is clean.
- 1. Soften it. Whirlpool's blog mixes half a cup of baking soda with three to four tablespoons of water into a paste and leaves it on the burnt area for 20 minutes. Maytag also puts a baking soda paste on burnt-on residue before scraping.
- 2. Cream on. Wipe off the paste and work a cooktop cleaning cream into what is left with a non-scratch pad.
- 3. Scrape. GE says to keep a small amount of cream on the residue while you scrape. Push the scraper forward in short strokes with a fresh blade: Samsung asks for a sharp blade with even edges, Haier says never a dull or nicked one.
- 4. Polish. Wipe away the loosened crust, let the cream dry to a haze, and buff it off with a dry cloth. Repeat on stubborn spots.
Is a razor blade safe on glass? Yes, if your maker allows it; all seven makers we read describe scraping the glass. Maytag says a 45-degree angle can help prevent scratching. The risk is a dull blade, a steep angle or grit under the blade.

For burnt-on crust
DIYSELF razor blade scraper with 15 extra blades
A rubber-handled scraper for single-edge razor blades, with 15 spares, so you always have the fresh edge Samsung and Haier ask for. The listing names glass top stoves among its uses.
Good for: lifting baked-on spills, burnt sugar and melted plastic.
The drawback: it is a general utility scraper sold for paint and glass, not a cooktop-branded tool, and the blade is sharp: keep the cover on and store it away from children.
See the scraper on AmazonThe cream for burnt-on food
Weiman Heavy Duty Glass & Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner, 10 oz with 3 scrubbing pads
Weiman's heavy-duty ceramic cooktop cleaning cream with three scrubbing pads. Its ingredient list shows fine mineral and plastic abrasives, citric acid and a silicone (dimethicone) for the shine. The listing says it also removes watermarks.
Good for: brown crust, burnt rings and haze that a damp cloth will not move.
The drawback: its safety data sheet carries the signal word Danger because it can cause serious eye damage. Wear glasses and rinse your hands. It also needs buffing, or it leaves a white haze.
See the heavy-duty cream on AmazonHow to get burn marks and rings off a glass top stove

Brown rings around a burner are usually lots of small boil-overs and grease from pan bottoms, baked on one layer at a time. Treat them like burnt-on food: cream, a non-scratch pad in circles that follow the ring, then the scraper for the hard edge. Buff and repeat.
If the rings come back every week, check your pans. A greasy or burnt outside bottom leaves a fresh ring every time you cook. Our guide to cleaning stainless steel pans shows how to clean the outside bottom.

The all-in-one pick
Weiman Glass & Ceramic Cooktop, Stove Top & Oven Cleaner Kit
The listing says this glass stove top cleaner kit holds Weiman's 10 oz heavy-duty cream, three non-scratch pads and a razor scraper (blade stored flipped for safety), for induction, glass, ceramic and smooth-top ranges.
Good for: brown rings, burnt crust and white haze, in one purchase.
The drawback: the listing calls the cream non-abrasive, but Weiman's own ingredient list includes fine mineral and plastic abrasives and quartz, and its safety data sheet warns of serious eye damage. Use light pressure and wear glasses. If you own a scraper, the cream and pads alone cost less.
See the Weiman kit on AmazonMelted plastic or sugar: the one time you clean it hot

Everything else waits until the glass cools. Melted sugar and plastic do not. GE says sugary spills such as jelly, fudge, candy and syrup, and melted plastics, can pit the cooktop surface unless removed while still hot. Samsung says to remove melted sugar or chocolate immediately, even while the cooktop is still hot.
- Turn the burner off.
- Put on an oven mitt. GE's method is to push the hot spill to a cool part of the cooktop with a single-edge razor scraper, then pick it up with paper towels.
- Let the glass cool, then clean what is left with cooktop cream and the scraper.
If the plastic has already hardened: GE warns that plastic that melts and hardens onto the glass usually cannot be removed because it bonds to the surface. Try a fresh blade, held low, with cream under it. If it will not move, stop before you scratch the glass, and ask the maker's service line.
How to remove cloudiness, white haze and water rings

A cloudy white film, faint rings where pots stood, or a silvery sheen are mostly minerals. GE says areas with a metallic sheen are caused by mineral deposits from evaporated water and food. LG adds that moisture in the air can leave water stains on the glass.
- Cooktop cream first. GE and Samsung point owners to Weiman or Cerama Bryte, and the Weiman listing says its cream removes watermarks. Let it dry to a haze and buff.
- White vinegar. Samsung says mineral bubbles are easier to remove with a baking soda and vinegar solution. For tough messes, Maytag combines equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle with a few drops of dish soap. Wipe with plain water and dry.
- Prevent it: dry the bottom of pots before you put them on the glass, and wipe boil-overs once the glass is cool, before they bake on again.
Can you remove scratches from a glass stove top?
Not real ones. Bosch is blunt: it is not possible to remove scratches once they have happened. What looks like a scratch is often a metal mark: GE says sliding pots and pans across the cooktop leaves metal markings on the surface. Try cooktop cream and a buff before you decide.
A simple check: run a fingernail across the line. If it catches, it is probably a scratch; if it glides over a silvery streak, clean it first.
- Lift, do not slide pots and pans.
- Watch rough pan bases. Bosch tells owners to avoid cookware with rough bases like cast iron pans on its glass.
- Clear the grit. LG says oil, sugar or salt on the bottom of cookware, or seasonings left on the cooktop, can scratch it.

The kit for metal marks
Cerama Bryte Cooktop Cleaning Kit (10 oz cream, scraper, tool and pad)
The other brand GE and Samsung name, and the one Haier lists. The listing says the kit has a 10 oz cleaner, a grip pad tool, a scraper and a pad, and that the cream has no phosphates, dimethicone or silicone.
Good for: metal marks, haze and light burnt-on food, plus a first scraper if you do not own one.
The drawback: the only safety data sheet we found is from 2011. It lists quartz and citric acid at pH 2 to 3, and says contact with aluminum, zinc or tin may release hydrogen, so keep it off aluminum trim.
See the Cerama Bryte kit on AmazonHow to clean an induction cooktop
An induction cooktop has the same kind of glass top, so the steps above all apply. A few things are specific to induction:
- Use the control lock if your cooktop has one, so a wet cloth on the touch panel does not switch a zone on, and keep the control area dry.
- White marks after a boil-over: LG says to apply cleaner, let it soak for 10 minutes, then tilt the scraper blade to 40 degrees and scrape. Finish with a damp cloth, then a dry one.
- No abrasive scrubbers: LG says not to use a highly abrasive sponge, abrasive cleaner, nylon or iron scrubber, or a corrosive cleaner on its induction glass.
- Cool it anyway. A hot pan heats the glass; Bosch says to wait until it is completely cool.

A liquid cream made for induction too
Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner 13 oz + Cookware Cleanser 12 oz
A bundle of Bar Keepers Friend's liquid cooktop cleaner and its cookware powder. The brand says the cooktop formula is made for radiant and induction glass-ceramic cooktops; its listed acid is citric acid, not oxalic acid.
Good for: induction glass, white boil-over marks and grease.
The drawback: the cooktop label says to rinse it off within one minute and never to mix it with bleach or ammonia. The second item in the bundle is the oxalic acid cookware powder, which is for pans, not the glass (see our stainless pan guide).
See Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop on AmazonElectric coil or gas stove?
Coil burners: Whirlpool's advice is to let them cool, unplug the coils following the manufacturer's instructions, and clean them with a damp cloth and dish soap, avoiding submerging or soaking the coils. Wash the drip pans in soapy water or the dishwasher; an old toothbrush helps in tight spots.
Gas grates and burner caps: let them cool and lift them off. Whirlpool says to immerse the grates and burner caps in hot, soapy water for at least 20 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch brush or pad, and to skip soaking if your grates are uncoated cast iron. Check your manual before you use anything stronger. Our gas vs electric vs induction guide compares how much cleaning each type needs.
Are cooktop cleaners safe? What the labels say
Cooktop creams are fine abrasives in an acidic or alkaline base, made to be wiped off a cooking surface. Here is what each safety data sheet (SDS) says.
Swipe the table sideways on a phone.
| Cleaner | Hazard on its SDS | Main ingredients | pH | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weiman Heavy Duty cream (in the Weiman kits) | Danger: causes skin irritation and serious eye damage (SDS, 2019) | Water, mineral and plastic abrasives, surfactants, citric acid, dimethicone, quartz, preservatives | 4.5 | Glasses and gloves; rinse your hands |
| Cerama Bryte cream | Caution: may cause skin and eye irritation (SDS, 2011) | Quartz 7 to 10%, citric acid, a glycol ether solvent | 2 to 3 | Gloves; keep off aluminum trim |
| Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop | Warning: mild skin irritation, eye irritation (SDS, 2015) | Mineral micro-abrasive, citric acid 3 to 4%, surfactant, glycerin | 2.8 to 2.9 | Rinse within one minute; never with bleach or ammonia |
| Weiman Daily spray | Not classified (SDS, 2022) | 2-butoxyethanol 1 to 5% | 11.5 to 12.5 | Mildest label; still gloves for long use |
- Wipe with a damp cloth after the cream and before you cook.
- Do not mix cleaners. Bar Keepers Friend says never to mix its cleaner with bleach or ammonia. Do not stack an acidic cream and an alkaline spray in the same wipe either.
- The gentlest option is free: a damp cloth, then baking soda paste. Use the cream when those are not enough.

| Product | Type | Best for | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weiman Glass & Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner Kit (cream, 3 pads, scraper) | Kit | Most people: rings, crust and haze | Eye-damage warning on the cream | Check on Amazon |
| Weiman Heavy Duty Cooktop Cleaner (10 oz + 3 pads) | Cream + pads | Burnt-on food, if you own a scraper | Same warning; no scraper | Check on Amazon |
| Cerama Bryte Cooktop Cleaning Kit | Kit with scraper | Metal marks and haze; first scraper | Oldest SDS of the set; acidic | Check on Amazon |
| Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner (13 oz, with cookware powder) | Liquid cream | Induction glass and grease | Rinse within a minute; bundle | Check on Amazon |
| Weiman Daily Cooktop Cleaner (2 pack) | Spray | Daily wipes and smudges | Will not lift burnt-on food | Check on Amazon |
| DIYSELF razor scraper + 15 blades | Scraper | Burnt crust, sugar, plastic | Sharp; a utility tool | Check on Amazon |
| Scotch-Brite Zero Scratch sponge (6 pack) | Non-scratch sponge | Working cream in without scratching | Slow on thick crust | Check on Amazon |
What we left out: a second Bar Keepers Friend pack that comes with a scraper had fewer than 1,000 ratings; Scotch-Brite's glass cooktop pads were rated below 4.5 stars; and one Weiman cream had no seller in stock when we checked.
For working the cream in
Scotch-Brite Zero Scratch Scrub Sponge, 6 pack
A sponge with a non-scratch scrub side, the soft kind the makers point to instead of rough scrubbers.
Good for: rubbing cream into rings and haze, and the daily wipe.
The drawback: slow on thick crust, and a sponge that picked up grit in the sink can scratch. Keep one just for the cooktop.
See the sponges on AmazonWhat the stove makers say
If your cooktop is one of these brands, its own advice comes first. This is what each maker's care page says, in short.
Swipe the table sideways on a phone.
| Maker | Cleaner it names | Scraper | Warm or cool? | Do not use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | affresh cooktop cleaner | About 45 degrees | Scrape warm, not hot, with an oven mitt | Steel wool, abrasive powder, chlorine bleach, rust remover, ammonia |
| GE | Weiman or CeramaBryte | About 45 degrees, with cream under it | Cool, except sugar and plastic: remove while hot | Sponges or cleaners other than those recommended |
| Samsung | Cerama Bryte and Weiman | A fresh, sharp blade | Sugar or chocolate: remove even while hot | Not covered on the page we read |
| LG | Range cleaner certified by Schott | About 45 degrees (40 on induction) | Cooled completely | General kitchen detergent, rough scrubbers or sponges |
| Bosch (induction and electric) | Bosch Glass Cooktop Cleaner | Low: 20 to 30 degrees | Completely cool | Window cleaner (ammonia); metal sponges |
| Haier | CeramaBryte products | No dull or nicked blades | Not covered on the page we read | Not covered on the page we read |
| Maytag | A nonabrasive cooktop cleaner | About 45 degrees | Let it cool | Abrasive cleaners, bleach, rust remover, ammonia, steel wool, abrasive cloths or paper towels |
What never to use on a glass stove top
- Steel wool and abrasive scouring powder. On Whirlpool's do-not-use list, and Bosch says a metal sponge is one way scratches start.
- Chlorine bleach, ammonia and rust remover. On both Whirlpool's and Maytag's lists.
- Window cleaner. Bosch says its ammonia can damage the cooktop and produce toxic fumes when heated.
- Rough sponges and scrubbers. LG says they may damage the glass surface.
- A dull or chipped razor blade. Haier and Samsung both say to use a fresh one.
- Magic Eraser, with care. Mr. Clean itself says the eraser is not recommended for high-gloss, polished or dark surfaces, which describes most glass cooktops. If you try it, test a small corner with light pressure.
Questions people ask
How do you clean a black glass stove top?
Let it cool, wipe off crumbs, clean with a cooktop cleaner and a damp microfiber cloth, then buff dry. Black glass shows every streak, so the dry buff matters most.
How do you clean burn rings off a glass top stove?
Rub cooktop cream into the ring with a non-scratch pad, lift the hard edge with a razor scraper held low, then buff. Repeat if needed.
Can I use Dawn on my glass top stove?
Whirlpool's blog allows diluted dish soap on a nonabrasive sponge for light messes, and Maytag adds a few drops to a vinegar spray. LG says general kitchen detergent can damage its glass, so check your manual.
What should you not use on a glass top stove?
Steel wool, scouring powder, chlorine bleach, ammonia, rust remover, window cleaner, rough sponges and dull razor blades.
What is the best cleaner for a glass stove top?
A cream made for glass-ceramic cooktops. GE and Samsung both name Weiman and Cerama Bryte. Our quick pick is the Weiman kit; the Cerama Bryte kit is the alternative.
What are the downsides of a glass top stove?
The glass shows every spill and streak, it scratches if grit or rough pans are dragged across it, and melted sugar or plastic can pit it if it cools on the surface.
How can I make my glass top stove look new?
Cream the whole surface, scrape burnt spots with a fresh blade held low, and buff dry. Haier says cream after each use keeps the cooktop looking new. Real scratches will not come out.
What happens when you mix vinegar and Dawn dish soap?
You get a soapy, mildly acidic spray for grease and mineral film. Maytag's version for tough messes is equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle with a few drops of dish soap. Wipe with plain water and dry the glass.
What is a good homemade glass stove top cleaner?
A baking soda paste (Whirlpool: half a cup of baking soda with three to four tablespoons of water) for burnt spots, and Maytag's vinegar, water and dish soap spray for grease and haze. A cooktop cream still does the polishing.
How do you remove cloudiness from a glass top stove?
Cloudiness is usually dried minerals. GE says a metallic sheen comes from mineral deposits. Use cooktop cream, or Samsung's baking soda and vinegar, then buff dry.
How do you get burn marks off an electric stove top?
On glass, use cooktop cream and a razor scraper held low, then buff. On a coil stove, Whirlpool says to wipe the cooled coils with a damp cloth and dish soap, never soak them, and wash the drip pans in soapy water.
Can I use Clorox wipes on a glass, electric or induction stove top?
Clorox says its disinfecting wipes are bleach-free and for non-food-contact surfaces, and no stove maker we read lists them for the cooktop. Use a cooktop cleaner instead.
Is it safe to use a razor blade on a glass stove top?
Yes, if your maker allows it; all seven makers we read describe scraping the glass. Use a fresh blade, keep it low, and put a little cream under it.
How do you get melted plastic off a glass stove top?
Turn the burner off, put on an oven mitt and push the hot plastic to a cool area with a razor scraper, as GE describes. Plastic that has already hardened may not come off, because GE says it bonds to the glass.
Can you use a Magic Eraser on a glass stove top?
Mr. Clean says the eraser is not recommended on high-gloss, polished or dark surfaces, and most cooktops are all three. If you try it, test a corner with light pressure.
Can scratches on a glass cooktop be removed?
No. Bosch says scratches cannot be removed once they have happened. Silvery metal marks from sliding pans are different: try cooktop cream first.
What not to use to clean an induction cooktop?
LG says no highly abrasive sponge, abrasive cleaner, nylon or iron scrubber, or corrosive cleaner. Bosch adds window cleaner because of its ammonia.
What is the best thing to clean an induction cooktop with?
A cleaner made for glass-ceramic cooktops, a soft cloth, and a scraper for stuck-on marks. Bar Keepers Friend says its cooktop cleaner is made for induction glass-ceramic too.
Can you use baking soda and vinegar on a glass stove top?
Yes. Samsung says mineral stains are easier to remove with baking soda and vinegar, and Whirlpool's blog uses baking soda paste on burnt spills and white vinegar on light marks.
