A glass top stove wants pans with flat, smooth bottoms that you lift instead of slide. Past that, the stove makers disagree, most of all about cast iron. We read what GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, Frigidaire and Bosch tell their own owners, then picked four pieces that fit those rules.

Our quick pick
Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Frying Pan Set, 8.25" and 10"
Uncoated stainless with a thick aluminum-core base, the kind of bottom GE singles out for its glass cooktops.

The short answer
- Best match: medium or heavy stainless steel with a flat, clad base. GE: “Stainless Steel is highly recommended.”
- Always: lift, never slide, and keep the pan bottom clean and dry.
- Cast iron: the makers split. GE, Frigidaire and Bosch warn against it; Whirlpool and Maytag allow it with care; Samsung's page says both.
- Skip: glass and stoneware pans, heat diffusers, and anything with a warped or rough bottom.
| Pick | Why it fits a glass top | Link |
|---|---|---|
| Farberware Classic stainless set | Flat aluminum-core base under stainless | Amazon |

How we put this together: on October 11-12, 2026 we read the stove makers' support pages and manuals and the cookware makers' own pages. We have not tested these products.
What the Stove Makers Say
Every maker agrees on flat, clean bottoms and no sliding. Whirlpool's range guide: “To avoid scratches, do not slide cookware or bakeware across the cooktop.” Cast iron is where they part ways.
| Maker | Cast iron on glass | Also says |
|---|---|---|
| GE | “Cast Iron cookware is not recommended.” | Stainless highly recommended, sandwich-clad bottom especially good; no diffusers |
| Whirlpool | Yes, with care | “Rough edges or burrs may scratch the cooktop.” |
| Maytag | Yes, with care | Use flat-bottom cast iron and heat it gradually |
| Samsung | Its page says both (see below) | “Never slide a pot across an electric or induction cooktop.” |
| Frigidaire (Canadian owner FAQ) | “Not recommended for use on ceramic/glass cooktops.” | Glass cookware may scratch the glass |
| Bosch (induction scratch tips) | Avoid rough bases | “Unfortunately, it's not possible to remove scratches once they've occurred.” |
GE explains why it likes clad stainless: “A sandwich-clad bottom is especially good because it combines the durability and stability of stainless steel with the heat conduction and distribution of aluminum or copper.” Whirlpool agrees: “A core or base of aluminum or copper on stainless steel provides even heating.”
Whirlpool's warranty also excludes “Cosmetic damage (e.g., scratches, dents, chips, and other damage to appliance finishes)” unless it comes from a defect reported within 30 days of delivery. We read only Whirlpool's warranty; check the one that came with your stove.

Our pick for most glass tops
Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Frying Pan Set, 8.25" and 10"
Uncoated stainless pans whose base is a thick aluminum core wrapped in stainless, the build GE and Whirlpool both describe. Farberware's California chemical disclosure lists this line with its stainless steels, not with its nonstick coatings.
Good for: everyday frying and searing on radiant glass or coil
The drawback: Farberware lists phenolic handles and an oven-safe limit of only 350°F, so these are not for finishing a steak in a hot oven.

It depends on your stove. Whirlpool and Maytag say yes with care, and Lodge agrees. GE and Frigidaire say it is not recommended, Bosch tells owners to avoid rough bases like cast iron, and Samsung's page says both. Your manual is the answer that counts.
Whirlpool: “Cast iron cookware can be used on a ceramic glass-top stove without causing damage to the surface or pan itself.” GE: “If the cookware has a burr or rough spot, it will scratch the glass surface.” GE adds that cast iron holds so much heat the element can shut itself off. Under electric glass cooktops, Samsung notes: “Glass and cast iron cookware are not recommended.” Its cast iron entry on the same page says: “It's fine to use on a ceramic cooktop, and it's compatible with induction, too.”

How to protect a glass top from cast iron
- Check the bottom. Run a hand over it; a burr or rough spot can scratch the glass, per GE and Whirlpool.
- Clean and dry the base before it goes on the glass, as Whirlpool advises.
- Lift, don't slide. Lodge: “We recommend gently picking up and setting down your cookware, rather than sliding it from one burner to another.”
- Heat it gradually to protect the pan. Maytag: “You can prevent thermal shock to your cast iron pan by gradually heating it either in a preheating oven or on the stove top on low heat.”
- Move it off when you finish. Whirlpool: “When you are done cooking, promptly remove the cast iron from the glass surface and place it on a cooling rack or trivet to avoid scorch marks.”

If your maker allows cast iron
Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 10.25"
A bare cast iron skillet, pre-seasoned at the factory. Lodge on glass tops: “With careful use, this shouldn't be a problem.”
Good for: searing and slow, steady heat
The drawback: GE and Frigidaire don't recommend cast iron on their glass tops, and Bosch counts cast iron among rough-based pans. It is heavy, so lift it every time.
See the Lodge skillet on AmazonPans to Avoid on a Glass Top, Material by Material
Whirlpool's guide sums up what goes wrong: “Cookware with rounded, warped, ribbed, or dented bottoms could cause uneven heating and poor cooking results.” GE is blunter: “Non-flat pans may crack the glass.”
| Material | What the makers say | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Clad stainless | GE: highly recommended; even heat with an aluminum or copper core | Good |
| Aluminum, hard-anodized | GE prefers heavy-weight; can leave marks that look like scratches, so clean them off right away (GE, Frigidaire) | Good, wipe marks |
| Copper bottom | GE: “Never let a copper-bottom pan boil dry.” | Careful |
| Enameled cast iron | GE: okay if fully covered in smooth enamel | Careful |
| Carbon steel | GE: okay if the bottom is flat and smooth | Careful |
| Glass, stoneware | GE: “Stoneware is not recommended.” Glass pans may scratch | Avoid |
The verdict column is a summary of the makers' wording, not a test. For carbon steel, see our carbon steel pan picks; for enamel, our enameled cast iron guide.
GE also says “Glass or Ceramic cookware is not recommended.” A ceramic nonstick pan is different: a metal pan with a coating. GreenLife says its pans are made from recycled aluminum; GE prefers heavy-weight aluminum, so check the weight of any nonstick pan. More on the coating in our ceramic cookware guide.

If you want nonstick
GreenLife Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan Set, 8" and 10"
Two ceramic-coated aluminum pans. GreenLife: “PTFE is a PFAS, and we do not use any PFAS including PTFE or PFOA in our coatings.”
Good for: eggs, fish and pancakes on low to medium heat
The drawback: the coating wears out. GreenLife: “Every nonstick coating is susceptible to wear and tear”, and spray oils “contain a propellant that damages nonstick coatings”.

The same picks work on electric coils, which are more forgiving: there is no glass to scratch or crack. A flat base still matters: a warped pan touches the coil in spots and heats in patches. Whirlpool's guide gives coils the same rule as glass, with no more than 1/2 inch of pan past the element. The cast iron warnings above are written for glass tops, and a flat clad base helps on coils too. Still choosing a range? See our guide to stove types.
Canning on a Glass Top Stove
Whirlpool allows it: “Canning can be performed on a glass smooth top cooking surface or traditional coil element cooktop.” Its rules: “On ceramic glass models, use only flat-bottomed canners to avoid damage to the cooktop and elements.” “On electric cooktops, canners should not extend more than 1/2" (1.3 cm) beyond the surface cooking area or element.” “Do not place canner on 2 surface cooking areas or elements at the same time.”
Not every maker agrees. Penn State Extension, citing the National Center for Home Food Preservation: “Some manufacturers do not recommend canning on their smooth-top stoves.” It also warns that “Many canners do not have flat enough bottoms to be in complete contact with the burner on a smooth cooktop.”

For canning on glass
Prep-N-Cook by McSunley 21.5 qt Stainless Steel Water Bath Canner
A stainless water bath canner with a jar rack and a flat encapsulated base that McSunley says is designed for glass top ranges.
Good for: water bath canning when your stove maker allows it
The drawback: it is about 14 inches across, and Whirlpool allows only 1/2 inch beyond the element. Measure your largest burner first.
See the McSunley canner on AmazonQuestions People Ask
Do you need special pans for a glass top stove?
No special type, but the bottom should be flat, smooth and about the size of the burner. GE suggests medium or heavy-weight pans.
Can you use a Dutch oven on a glass top stove?
Maytag: “Yes, dutch ovens can be used on glass stovetops.” Lift it. For enameled ones, GE asks that the enamel cover the pot completely. See our enameled Dutch oven picks.
How do you know if a pan is flat?
GE's ruler test: “Turn the pan upside down and place a ruler or other object with a straight edge across the bottom of the pan.” The edge should touch evenly. GE's second test: boil 1 inch of water on high; bubbles clustered to one side or bunched in the middle mean the pan is not flat.
Can you use a heat diffuser or a mat on a glass top?
GE says no: “Do not use any kind of diffuser or similar product on any cooktop burner, including an electric coil, induction or radiant/halogen surface.” GE does not recommend silicone mats or wire trivets on the cooktop either.
Are all glass top stoves induction?
No. Radiant glass tops heat with elements under the glass and work with most flat pans. Induction looks similar but needs magnetic cookware. See what an induction cooktop is.
