“Non-toxic” on a dish soap is the maker's own word. What you can check is the maker's ingredient list and EPA's Safer Choice product list, so on October 18, 2026, we read both for Amazon's top dish soaps, Dawn included. Our pick, Seventh Generation Free & Clear, is on EPA's list by name, though it still uses isothiazolinone preservatives.

Our quick pick
Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dish Soap, 19 oz, Pack of 6
On EPA's Safer Choice list by name, flagged fragrance-free (checked October 18, 2026). Amazon's top unsponsored result for “non toxic dish soap” that day was a scented Seventh Generation; this is the same line without fragrance.
See Seventh Generation Free & Clear on AmazonThe drawback: it uses isothiazolinone preservatives, which EPA's Safer Choice ingredient list accepts but marks yellow for “some hazard profile issues”.

Is Dawn Dish Soap Toxic?
If you mean poisoning, Poison Control says “Drinking dish soap water or dish soap alone will usually result in minor effects.” It adds that dish soap “can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea” if swallowed and “can cause eye irritation” if splashed in the eyes (Poison Control).
If you mean ingredients, read the lists. A Dawn Ultra Original refill jug was #1 in Amazon's Dish Soap best-sellers on October 18, 2026. Its Amazon ingredient list includes “COLORANTS”, “FRAGRANCES” and the preservative “METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE”, and it ends with “Contains fragrance allergen(s).” Dawn Free & Clear drops the scent and color: Dawn says it is “crafted with 0% fragrance, dyes, phthalates, or chlorine added”. P&G's ingredient label for it still lists methylisothiazolinone and phenoxyethanol (P&G SmartLabel). No Dawn product was on EPA's Safer Choice list when we searched it on October 18, 2026.
Dawn's position: “The safety of the perfume, along with all other materials in our liquid dish soap, has been thoroughly assessed to ensure safe use as instructed.” On using Dawn as a hand soap, Dawn says it “is formulated to wash dishes, so if you suffer from dry or cracked skin or any redness, avoid using the product” (Dawn FAQ).
Are Dawn's Ingredients “Safer Choice Approved”?
You may see this in search answers. EPA's Safer Chemical Ingredients List does give a green circle to sodium lauryl sulfate, the first cleaner on Dawn Free & Clear's label. But that list rates single chemicals. EPA says it “includes many of the chemicals evaluated through the Safer Choice Program”. The Safer Choice label is for whole products, and for those “EPA reviews all chemical ingredients, regardless of their percentage in the product.” A green ingredient does not certify the bottle.

If you want to stay with Dawn
Dawn Free & Clear EZ-Squeeze Dish Soap, Unscented, 24.3 fl oz
P&G's label lists water, sodium lauryl sulfate, C10-16 alkyldimethylamine oxide, deceth-8, C9-11 pareth-8, sodium chloride, a PEG/PPG polymer, phenoxyethanol and methylisothiazolinone. Amazon's list matches. The listing title calls it “Unscented”.
Good for: Dawn users who want to drop fragrance and dye
The drawback: it keeps methylisothiazolinone, a preservative EPA flags yellow (more below).
See Dawn Free & Clear on AmazonWho Certifies What: Safer Choice, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE
EPA Safer Choice is the U.S. government's label. “Every ingredient must meet strict safety criteria for both human health and the environment”. EPA also runs a fragrance-free label “to help consumers who prefer products without fragrance.” EPA adds: “Participation in the Safer Choice program is voluntary” (EPA). A bottle without the label may never have applied.
On October 18, 2026, EPA's product list held 54 home dish soaps. From our picks, only Seventh Generation's Free & Clear bottle and its refill were on it, both flagged fragrance-free. Dawn, Dapple, ATTITUDE, Dr. Bronner's and Meliora were not. Fragrance-free dish soaps on the list that we did not pick include Ultra Palmolive Pure + Clear Fragrance Free, ECOS Free & Clear and Biokleen Free & Clear (EPA Safer Choice products).
EWG Verified and MADE SAFE are private programs, not government ones. We report them as the maker's claim.
If you follow EWG
ATTITUDE Dish Soap, Citrus Zest, 23.7 fl oz
ATTITUDE calls the formula “EWG VERIFIED” and lists percentages: “5-15% anionic surfactants” (sodium coco-sulfate) and under 5% of three glucosides. It is preserved with sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, and the listing says it is “Free from bleach, SLS, SLES, colorants, alcohol, formaldehyde, and MIT/CMIT preservatives.”
Good for: cooks who want no isothiazolinone preservative
The drawback: it is scented. ATTITUDE names the scent ingredients: terpineol acetate, terpineol, tetrahydrolinalool and triethyl citrate.

| Product | Cleaners / preservative / scent (maker's words) | On EPA's list (October 18, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Seventh Generation Free & Clear | Sodium lauryl sulfate (10% to 20% per the safety data sheet), lauramine oxide, decyl glucoside / benzisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone / no fragrance or dye | Yes, by name, fragrance-free |
| Dapple Baby Fragrance Free | C9-11 alkyl polyglucoside, sodium lauroamphoacetate / benzisothiazolinone / no fragrance | No |
| ATTITUDE Citrus Zest | Sodium coco-sulfate (5-15%), three glucosides (under 5%) / sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate / named fragrance | No |
| Dawn Free & Clear | Sodium lauryl sulfate, an amine oxide, deceth-8, C9-11 pareth-8 / phenoxyethanol, methylisothiazolinone / no fragrance or dye added | No |
| Dawn Ultra Original (for comparison) | Sodium lauryl sulfate, an amine oxide, deceth-8, C9-11 alketh-8 / methylisothiazolinone, phenoxyethanol / fragrances and colorants | No |
| Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds | Sodium lauryl sulfate (10 to 20%), lauryl glucoside, sodium coco sulfate / sodium benzoate / fir and spruce oils, limonene | No |
| Meliora bar, Lemon | Soap made from coconut and sunflower oils / none listed / lemon peel oil | No |
One Brand, Four Ingredient Lists
Seventh Generation's product page and the 6-pack's Amazon listing both name benzisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. Its safety data sheet (issued February 17, 2026) lists methylisothiazolinone and octylisothiazolinone instead, each at “<0.01%”, and no benzisothiazolinone (Seventh Generation SDS). The 6-pack's Amazon list also adds tetrasodium glutamate diacetate and sodium citrate. The data sheet adds propylene glycol (0.1% to 1%). The refill's Amazon list names caprylyl/myristyl glucoside where the bottle lists decyl glucoside. Formulas change, so read the label on the bottle you receive.
The Preservatives EPA Flags Yellow
Methylisothiazolinone (MIT), benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and octylisothiazolinone are allowed in Safer Choice products, but EPA codes all three with a yellow triangle: “The chemical has met Safer Choice Criteria for its functional ingredient-class, but has some hazard profile issues.” (EPA ingredient list). Among our picks, Seventh Generation uses two, Dawn Free & Clear uses MIT and Dapple uses BIT. ATTITUDE, Sal Suds and the Meliora bar list none.
What About 1,4-Dioxane?
EPA says “1,4-Dioxane may be found as a contaminant in consumer products such as soaps and detergents.” New York's limit for household cleansing products, dish soap included, has been 1 ppm since December 31, 2023, and the law allows waivers (NYSDEC). 1,4-Dioxane is not added on purpose; it can be left over from making some ingredients (EPA). FDA, writing about cosmetics, says those ingredients can be spotted by names such as “PEG” or the syllable “-eth-” (FDA). On our list, that means deceth-8 and C9-11 pareth-8 on Dawn Free & Clear's label (C9-11 alketh-8 on Ultra Original), plus the PEI-14 PEG-24/PPG-16 copolymer in both. That tells you where to look, not what is in a given bottle: none of the makers we read publishes a 1,4-dioxane figure.
Best Overall: Seventh Generation Free & Clear
Best overall
Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dish Soap, 19 oz, Pack of 6
On EPA's Safer Choice list by name, flagged fragrance-free (October 18, 2026). Seventh Generation says the formula “does not have fragrances and dyes” and calls it a “USDA Certified Biobased Product 95% made with renewable, plant-based ingredients”. The main cleaner is sodium lauryl sulfate, which EPA codes green. For parents: “All Seventh Generation dishwashing products can be used to effectively clean baby bottles.”
Good for: everyday hand dishwashing in a fragrance-free kitchen
The drawback: the label lists two isothiazolinone preservatives, methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone, which EPA flags yellow.
See Seventh Generation Free & Clear on AmazonRefilling? The 50 oz refill is on EPA's list too, as “Dish Liquid Refill, Free & Clear”.
See the refill 3-pack on AmazonThe scented Seventh Generation that was Amazon's top unsponsored result for “non toxic dish soap” on October 18, 2026 adds “PLANT-DERIVED FRAGRANCES”; it has its own EPA entry, without the fragrance-free flag.
Fragrance-Free Dish Soap for Sensitive Skin and Baby Bottles
Three of our picks add no fragrance: Seventh Generation Free & Clear, Dapple and Dawn Free & Clear. Seventh Generation says Free & Clear is “made for your sensitive skin”. If your hands react, ATTITUDE gives this advice for its own soap: “If you have very sensitive skin, we recommend avoiding prolonged contact or wearing gloves.” Poison Control: “Some people have also reported having allergic reactions to dish soap.”

Baby bottles
Dapple Baby Fragrance Free Bottle & Dish Soap, 16.9 fl oz, 3 Pack
Made for “fat, protein, and carbohydrate residue left behind by breast milk and formula”. Dapple lists “C9-11 alkyl polyglucoside (cleaner derived from tree oils and sugar)”, “sodium lauroamphoacetate (cleaner derived from coconut)”, baking soda and one preservative, benzisothiazolinone. The listing says it is “Made without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic dyes or fragrances, SLS, MEA, DEA, or TEA”.
Good for: bottles, nipples, pump parts and sippy cups
The drawback: it uses one isothiazolinone preservative, benzisothiazolinone, which EPA flags yellow.
See Dapple on AmazonFor Greasy Pans: Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds
Sal Suds is a concentrate, and Dr. Bronner's is clear that it “is not a soap but instead is a concentrated hard-surface all-purpose cleaner.” Its Amazon listing calls it a “heavy-duty nontoxic degreaser when used as directed for tough buildup”, and for dishes the maker's line is “One small squirt washes a sinkful.” For coated pans, see how to wash a nonstick pan.

Greasy pans
Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds All-Purpose Cleaner, Fir & Spruce, 32 oz 2-Pack
Dr. Bronner's ingredient disclosure lists water, sodium lauryl sulfate, lauryl glucoside, sodium coco sulfate and sodium benzoate, scented with fir needle and spruce oils, and it marks limonene as a “Fragrance allergen* from Essential Oil”. The Amazon listing has no ingredient list, so these facts come from the maker's disclosure for the same 32 oz bottle.
Good for: roasting pans, greasy sheet pans, and one bottle for dishes and counters
The drawback: the concentrate's safety data sheet uses the signal word “Danger” and says “Causes serious eye damage”, so dilute it and keep it away from eyes.
See Sal Suds on AmazonNo Plastic Bottle: A Solid Dish Soap Bar
A bar skips the plastic bottle. Meliora's care tip: “We recommend storing it in a draining soap dish.” If you would rather mix your own cleaner, our non-toxic kitchen cleaning guide covers castile soap and simple mixes.

No plastic bottle
Meliora Dish Soap Bar, Lemon
True soap. Meliora lists “Vegetable soap [sodium cocoate, sodium sunflowerate, glycerin, water, organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, organic helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil]”, and the Lemon bar adds “organic citrus limon (lemon) peel oil”. Meliora says “All of our ingredients are MADE SAFE® Certified” and “We list every ingredient, including scents, on the front label”. The Amazon list for this bar matches but leaves out water.
Good for: skipping plastic bottles at the sink
The drawback: Amazon sells the lemon bar, and Meliora marks it “Contains fragrance allergens.” We did not find the unscented bar on Amazon; Meliora sells it on its own site.
See the Meliora bar on AmazonHow We Chose
We started with Amazon's results and Dish Soap best-sellers on October 18, 2026, with a U.S. address. We read each maker's ingredient pages and, where published, safety data sheets and California disclosures; searched every brand on EPA's product list; looked up key ingredients on EPA's ingredient list; and checked who sells each listing. Each drawback comes from the maker's words or EPA's codes. Some popular candidates are mentions, not picks: Mrs. Meyer's is scented, No Tox Life's dish block publishes no ingredient list we could find, ECOS Free & Clear (on EPA's list) was low on stock from Amazon, and Biokleen rated below our liquid picks on Amazon. Palmolive Pure + Clear is in the FAQ; we chose Seventh Generation because its line came first in Amazon's search. We did not test these dish soaps.
Questions People Ask
Is Dawn Free & Clear non-toxic?
It has no fragrance or dye added, and P&G's label lists methylisothiazolinone and phenoxyethanol. It was not on EPA's Safer Choice list on October 18, 2026. Whether that fits your idea of non-toxic depends on which ingredients you avoid.
Is Seventh Generation dish soap non-toxic?
EPA's Safer Choice list on October 18, 2026 included these Seventh Generation dish liquids: Free & Clear, its refill, and Fresh Lime & Ginger. The Free & Clear label also lists two isothiazolinone preservatives, which EPA flags yellow.
Is Mrs. Meyer's dish soap non-toxic?
Mrs. Meyer's lists “Fragrance” on its Lemon Verbena dish soap, names fragrance components such as citral, geraniol and linalool, and lists “Benzisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Contains Fragrance Allergens” (Mrs. Meyer's). No Mrs. Meyer's product was on EPA's Safer Choice list on October 18, 2026.
Is Palmolive non-toxic?
EPA's list on October 18, 2026 included “Ultra Palmolive Pure + Clear Fragrance Free Dish Liquid”, flagged fragrance-free. Its Amazon list starts with water and sodium laureth sulfate. We did not check other Palmolive lines.
What ingredients should I avoid in dish soap?
It depends on what worries you. If you want no scent or color, skip fragrance and dyes. To avoid isothiazolinones, look for MIT, BIT and octylisothiazolinone, which EPA flags yellow. If 1,4-dioxane is the worry, FDA's cosmetics page points to names with “PEG” or the syllable “-eth-” (as in deceth-8). A bottle on EPA's Safer Choice list has had every ingredient reviewed by EPA.
Is dish soap toxic if swallowed?
Poison Control says it “will usually result in minor effects” and advises: “If someone swallows dish soap, rinse the mouth with water and take small sips of water. Then, seek expert guidance immediately.” In the U.S., call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Can I wash baby bottles with regular dish soap?
Two makers we read say yes. Seventh Generation says all its dishwashing products “can be used to effectively clean baby bottles”. ATTITUDE says yes, “as long as they are thoroughly rinsed with potable water after washing.” Dapple is made for bottles.
Can you use castile soap or Sal Suds for dishes?
Sal Suds, yes: Dr. Bronner's says “One small squirt washes a sinkful.” It is a concentrated all-purpose cleaner, not a soap. For castile soap and homemade mixes, see our non-toxic kitchen cleaning guide.
