Pouring descaling solution into a coffee maker's water reservoir before descaling

Short cups, a slow brew or a glowing descale light usually mean scale inside your Keurig. The fix is simple, but it isn't the same on every model, so this guide follows Keurig's own manuals, one model at a time.

The short answer

  • Use: Keurig Descaling Solution. Every Keurig guide we read names it, and none mentions vinegar.
  • How much: the whole bottle plus one bottle of water on full-size brewers; a third of the bottle on a K-Mini or Mini Plus.
  • Then: older models rest 30 minutes and take at least 12 plain-water brews; newer ones rinse in descale mode until the light goes off.
  • How often: every 3 to 6 months, or every 3 months on newer models.

Keurig 6-Month Brewer Maintenance Kit with descaling solution, rinse pods and water filters

Our quick pick

Keurig 6-Month Brewer Maintenance Kit

Two bottles of Keurig Descaling Solution, 10 rinse pods and 3 water filters: Keurig's whole care schedule in one box.

See the Keurig 6-Month kit on Amazon

K-Mini, Mini Plus or K-Slim? Their guides list no water filter, so buy just the descaler.

Keurig Descaling Solution, 1 bottle

How we put this together: on October 10, 2026 we read 11 Keurig Use & Care Guides, Keurig's descaling sheet, the descaler's safety data sheet and Keurig's pack wording. Keurig's website didn't load from our location, so where a guide is silent, we say so. We haven't tested these products.

Descaling, rinse pods and the water filter do three different jobs

Keurig's own care kit splits the work three ways: a rinse pod weekly for leftover flavors, a fresh filter every 2 months, and descaling every 3 months for mineral buildup. Only descaling touches scale, and “Scale is non-toxic, but left unattended, can hinder brewer performance,” Keurig's descaling sheet says.

How to descale a Keurig (full-size brewers)

Pour the whole bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution and one bottle of water into the empty reservoir, brew it through without a pod until it runs dry, then rinse with fresh water. Only the rest time and the rinses vary by model.

  1. Empty the reservoir and remove any water filter. Use a large ceramic mug: “Do not use a paper cup.” The K-Express and K-Iced want one of at least 14 oz.
  2. Pour in the whole bottle, then refill the bottle with water and add that too. Leave the pod holder empty.
  3. Start the descale. Newer models: plugged in and powered off, hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons for 3 seconds to enter Descale Mode. Older models: brew the largest size.
  4. Brew until the Add Water light comes on, pouring each mug into the sink.
  5. Rest only if your model says so. The K-Classic, K-Elite and K-Café stand at least 30 minutes while on; then tip out what's left and rinse the reservoir. The K-Supreme, K-Express, K-Iced and K-Slim list no rest.
  6. Rinse with fresh water. Fill to MAX and brew until the descale light goes off (newer models) or for at least 12 largest-size brews, refilling once (K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café).

Foam is normal, Keurig says. If a badly scaled brewer stops filling, unplug it, pour out the solution, refill with water and rerun the rinse. Still stuck? Leave it unplugged for 30 minutes.

Keurig 6-Month Brewer Maintenance Kit

Our pick

Keurig 6-Month Brewer Maintenance Care Kit

Two descales, 10 rinse pods and 3 filter refills: about six months of Keurig's schedule on a full-size brewer.

Good for: full-size Keurigs that use a Keurig water filter

The drawback: the filters need Keurig's filter handle, which the filter pack says is sold separately, and the K-Mini, Mini Plus and K-Slim guides don't mention a filter at all, so on those you pay for parts you can't use.

Bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution

Just the descaler

Keurig Descaling Solution

The descaler every Keurig guide we read names. One bottle is one descale on a full-size brewer, or three on a K-Mini.

Good for: K-Mini, Mini Plus and K-Slim owners

The drawback: its safety data sheet lists one hazard, “Causes serious eye irritation”, and advises eye protection, so pour slowly.

Keurig descaling steps by model

Swipe the table sideways on a phone.

Model Descaling solution Rest Fresh-water rinses
K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café Whole bottle + 1 bottle of water At least 30 min, brewer on At least 12 large brews
K-Supreme, Supreme Plus Whole bottle + 1 bottle of water, in Descale Mode None listed Until the DESCALE light goes off
K-Express, K-Iced Same, brewing at 12oz None listed 12oz brews until the DESCALE light goes off
K-Slim Whole bottle + 1 bottle of water, in Descale Mode None listed A full reservoir
K-Mini A third (4.6 oz) + just under 3/4 cup of water At least 30 min 3 brews of 10 oz
K-Mini Plus A third (4.6 oz), water to the 10 oz line At least 30 min 3 brews of 12 oz

Allow about 45 minutes, or 15 to 20 on the K-Supreme and K-Slim. For Mini Plus rinses, Keurig's descaling sheet says 10 oz and the Mini Plus guide says 12 oz.

K-Mini and K-Mini Plus

Brew a third of the bottle with water into a large mug. On the second brew, switch the brewer off as it starts to pour, wait at least 30 minutes, then finish it. End with three fresh-water brews.

The descale light: what it means and how to turn it off

  • K-Classic: “You should promptly descale if the red Descale Light is illuminated.” Repeat the procedure if it stays lit.
  • K-Supreme, Supreme Plus, K-Express, K-Iced, K-Slim: enter Descale Mode as above and keep rinsing until the light goes off. The K-Express guide is blunt: “the full descaling procedure must be completed to turn off the Descale light.” It and the K-Iced also flag it after every 250 brews.
  • K-Supreme Plus SMART: tap Continue on the screen notice, or pick Descale Mode in Settings.
  • K-Elite and K-Café: the guides give no separate reset; run the full procedure.
  • K-Mini and Mini Plus: no descale light, so go by the calendar.

Can you descale a Keurig with vinegar?

Not in anything Keurig printed that we could read. All 11 guides and the descaling sheet use Keurig Descaling Solution, and none mentions vinegar for descaling. Many sites say Keurig allows white vinegar. Keurig's own site didn't load for us, so we can't confirm that.

The only vinegar line points the other way: the K-Supreme Plus guide says to “clean the metal areas with a paper towel and a non-vinegar glass cleaner”. Keurig's warranty also backs its own accessories: “Only the use of Keurig® K-Cup® brand pods and accessories will guarantee the proper functioning and lifetime of your Keurig® brewer.” For a drip machine, see how to clean a coffee maker with vinegar.

How often to descale a Keurig

Every 3 to 6 months on the Minis, K-Classic, K-Elite and K-Café. Newer guides say: “You should descale your brewer every 3 months, or when the descale notification turns on.” With hard water, go sooner: “Calcium deposits may build up faster, making it necessary to descale more often.”

And every guide says “Do not use distilled water.” If your coffee tastes of chlorine or minerals, the K-Mini and K-Classic guides suggest bottled or filtered water.

Is Keurig Descaling Solution safe? What's in it

Its 2019 safety data sheet (listed manufacturer: Urnex Brands) doesn't class it as acutely toxic. It names one ingredient, citric acid, at 7 to 13%, and one hazard under the signal word Warning: “Causes serious eye irritation.” Its pH is 1.86 undiluted. It wasn't on EPA's Safer Choice list when we checked on October 9, 2026.

Rinse pods are for flavor, not scale

Keurig's box says to use one weekly, or after a flavored coffee, cocoa or tea: brew it at 8 oz, then “Perform a fresh water cleansing brew using the 8oz brew size”.

Box of Keurig Rinse Pods

For flavor carry-over

Keurig Rinse Pods, 10 count

Keurig's own rinse pods, used like a K-Cup pod, then one water-only brew.

Good for: anyone who switches between flavored coffee, cocoa and tea

The drawback: they don't descale, so you still need the descaler every few months.

See Keurig Rinse Pods on Amazon

The water filter: which Keurigs take one

The K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café, K-Supreme, Supreme Plus, K-Express and K-Iced guides mention a Keurig water filter; the Mini, Mini Plus and K-Slim guides don't. Replace it every 2 months, the pack says, and take it out before you descale.

Box of Keurig water filter refill cartridges

For filter models

Keurig Water Filter Refill Cartridges, 6 count

Keurig's own cartridges for its filter handle. At one every 2 months, six last a year.

Good for: the seven filter models above

The drawback: the pack notes “Water filter handle sold separately”, so check your brewer came with one; the Minis and K-Slim have nowhere to put it.

How to clean the needles, pod holder, drip tray and reservoir

Grounds in your cup or short brews often mean a clogged needle. Lift out the pod holder, pull off the funnel, then, per the K-Mini guide: “Insert a straightened paper clip into the exit needle to loosen the clog and push it out.” Under the lid, work the clip into each hole of the entrance needle. Then “Lower the handle completely and run two water-only brew cycles.”

A pod holder, funnel and drip tray drying on a towel next to a paper clip

Dishwasher or not depends on the model:

  • K-Classic: pod holder on the top shelf on a low-temperature cycle; the funnel is dishwasher safe; the reservoir and lid are not.
  • K-Elite: “The water reservoir lid and water reservoir should not be put into the dishwasher.”
  • K-Café: reservoir and lid: “Clean in a dishwasher (top rack only) or hand wash.”
  • K-Express and K-Iced: “Parts are not dishwasher safe.”
  • K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Mini: the guides only describe a damp, soapy, non-abrasive cloth.

Let the reservoir air-dry: “Do not dry the inside of the water reservoir with a cloth as lint may remain.”

What not to do

  • No distilled water, no paper cups, no dishwasher unless your guide names the part.
  • Never put the brewer in water. Wipe the outside with a damp, soapy cloth.
  • Skip bleach and vinegar glass cleaner. None of the 11 guides calls for bleach, and the K-Supreme Plus rules out vinegar cleaner on its metal trim.

Questions people ask

Why is my Keurig descale light still on?

On the K-Express and K-Iced it only clears once the whole procedure, rinses included, is done. The K-Classic guide says to repeat the descaling if the red light stays on.

Can Keurig parts go in the dishwasher?

Only some. The K-Classic pod holder can go on the top shelf on a low-temperature cycle, and the K-Café reservoir on the top rack. K-Express and K-Iced parts and the K-Elite reservoir can't.

What can I use instead of Keurig Descaling Solution?

Keurig's guides name only its own solution, plus a Keurig Descale Pouch in the K-Express and K-Iced guides. Keurig warns that damage from non-Keurig accessories may not be covered.

How do I descale a K-Duo?

We couldn't find a readable copy of Keurig's K-Duo guide, so follow the Use and Care Guide that came in the box.
