An air fryer is a small, fast convection oven with a basket. Its real benefits are speed, crisp results with a spoonful of oil instead of a pot of it, and low energy use for small meals. Its real downsides are a small basket, a coated cooking surface on most models, and health claims that are stronger on the box than in the research. We go through each benefit and drawback with its source, look at what the health studies found (including one that disagrees with the headlines), and help you decide whether one belongs in your kitchen and which size to get.
Quick answer
- Biggest benefits: crisp food with about a tablespoon of oil, preheats in minutes, uses less energy than heating a full oven for a small batch, reheats leftovers without making them soggy.
- Biggest disadvantages: small capacity (cooking in batches for 4+ people), counter space, most baskets are coated, food dries out if you overcook it.
- Healthier? Healthier than deep frying for fat and calories. Not automatically lower in acrylamide: one 2024 study found air-fried potatoes averaged the highest level of the three methods it tested (the differences were not statistically significant).
- Worth it? Yes if you cook for 1 to 4 people and eat a lot of frozen, roasted or reheated food. Probably not if you already have a convection oven you use daily, or you cook for 6 in one go.
| Air fryer pros | Air fryer cons |
|---|---|
| Far less oil than deep frying | Small basket, batch cooking for families |
| Preheats in about 3 to 5 minutes | Takes counter space |
| Low energy use for small meals | Most baskets are nonstick-coated |
| Crisp reheating of leftovers | Lean food dries out if overcooked |
| No pot of hot oil to spill or store | Not less acrylamide by default |
| Roasts, bakes and dehydrates too | Fan noise, and wet batters do not work |

If you are buying one now
Cosori TurboBlaze 6 Qt
The top-selling air fryer on Amazon when we checked in September 2026. It holds 6 quarts, enough for 2 to 4 people, and Cosori describes the basket coating as PFAS-free ceramic. This model is not on the 2023 Cosori recall list (details below).
How an air fryer works
A heating element sits above the food and a fan blows the hot air down and around it at high speed. The basket has holes or a raised crisper plate, so air reaches the underside too. That fast, dry, circulating heat browns the surface the way hot oil does, which is why a thin coat of oil is enough to get a crust. Technically it is a small convection oven. The difference from a full-size convection oven is the small space and the stronger fan relative to that space, so it heats up faster and crisps more aggressively.
Benefits of an air fryer
1. Much less oil and fat than deep frying
This is the benefit people buy an air fryer for, and it holds up against deep frying. Cleveland Clinic says air frying can cut the calories you would get from deep frying by up to 80%, using around a tablespoon of oil instead of a pot. The bigger numbers on the boxes come from the makers' own testing. Ninja says "up to 75% less fat", measured against hand-cut, deep-fried French fries, and Instant says "95% less oil" than deep frying. Those are useful as a rough guide, but they are the brands' figures rather than independent studies. Keep in mind the comparison is with deep frying. Against oven roasting with the same spoonful of oil, the fat difference is small.
2. Fast preheat and shorter cooking
Prudent Reviews timed air fryers reaching 400°F in five minutes or less, against about 13 minutes for a gas oven and 17 to 19 minutes for an electric one. For a weeknight tray of wings or vegetables, that preheat gap is most of the time saved.
3. Low energy use for small meals
The same tests put most air fryers at 1.4 to 1.7 kWh per hour of use. Because an air fryer heats a few quarts instead of a whole oven cavity and runs for less time, a small batch usually costs less energy. The advantage shrinks when you have to cook three batches back to back to feed a family.
4. Leftovers come back crisp
Pizza, fries, roast potatoes and fried chicken reheat far better than in a microwave, which steams them. Three to five minutes at around 350°F is usually enough. We list times for pizza, chicken, steak and rice in our guide to reheating leftovers without drying them out.
5. More than frying
Most models roast, bake and reheat, and many dehydrate. Vegetables, salmon, chicken thighs, frozen snacks, small batches of cookies and even hard-boiled eggs work well.
6. Less mess and smell than a fryer
No oil to heat, splatter, strain or throw away, and less of the frying smell that hangs around a kitchen. You still get some cooking smell and some grease in the drawer.
7. Safer than a pot of hot oil
No open pot of oil means no oil fire from an overheated pan and no spills. Air fryers have their own risks, covered in the safety section below, but the everyday burn and spill risk is lower.
Disadvantages of an air fryer
1. Limited capacity
This is the complaint that matters most. A 4-quart basket holds about 2 lb of fries, which Ninja lists for its AF101. Food has to sit in one loose layer to crisp, so the usable capacity is smaller than the quart number suggests. For four or more people you will cook in batches, and the first batch goes cold while the second one cooks. The fix is a bigger basket or a two-basket model, which costs more and takes more counter.
If you cook for a family
Ninja Foodi DZ201 8 Qt DualZone
Two separate 4-quart baskets with their own heat, so a main and a side finish at the same time instead of one after the other. It was one of the highest-rated two-basket models on Amazon when we checked in September 2026.
Worth knowing: it costs well above a single-basket model and takes a wide strip of counter. Each basket is only 4 quarts, so a single large item has to fit in one of them. The Amazon listing mentions nonstick crisper plates but does not say what kind of coating they use, so check Ninja's manual or product page if that matters to you.

2. It takes counter space
A 6-quart basket model like the Cosori TurboBlaze measures about 14.4 by 11.8 inches and 11.9 inches tall, and it needs clear space around the vent while it runs. In a small kitchen it often ends up living on the counter because it is awkward to lift in and out of a cabinet.
A 6-quart basket model needs roughly a 12 by 15 inch patch of counter.
3. Most baskets are coated
Nearly every basket air fryer uses a nonstick coating on the basket and crisper plate, either traditional PTFE-type nonstick or a ceramic (sol-gel) coating. Coatings wear with scrubbing and metal tools, and labels like "PFAS-free" and "PTFE-free" do not mean the same thing. We explain the difference in what those two labels actually promise, and whether ceramic is the better choice in our look at ceramic-coated baskets.
4. Food can dry out
The same fast, dry air that crisps a surface pulls moisture out of lean meat. Chicken breast, pork chops and fish fillets go from done to dry in a couple of minutes. A light coat of oil, a lower temperature and checking early all help.
5. Some foods do not work
Wet batters drip through the basket before they set. Light, loose food such as leafy greens or unweighted parchment can get blown into the fan. Large roasts may not fit or will brown on top before the middle is done. Plain cheese melts through the holes unless it is breaded or frozen first.
6. Fan noise
The fan runs the whole time. Prudent Reviews compared some models at around 65 decibels, a little under a hair dryer. Newer models are often quieter, and quiet operation is one of the things reviewers mention most on the Cosori TurboBlaze listing.
7. Texture is close to fried, not identical
Air-fried fries and wings are crisp, but the crust is drier and thinner than a deep-fried one. If restaurant-style fried chicken is what you are after, an air fryer gets you close, but it will not fool anyone.
Health: air fryer benefits vs side effects
The health case is real, but it is narrower than the marketing suggests. Here are the main findings side by side.
The benefit: fat and calories
Compared with deep frying, the reduction in oil, fat and calories is large and well supported (see above). If air frying replaces deep-fried food in your week, that is a real improvement. If it replaces steamed or oven-roasted food, it is not.
The disputed one: acrylamide
Acrylamide forms when starchy foods like potatoes brown at high heat. Cleveland Clinic cites one study finding that an air fryer can reduce acrylamide by 90%. A 2024 study in Frontiers in Nutrition (Navruz-Varlı and Mortaş) found something different: air-fried potatoes averaged 12.19 µg/kg of acrylamide, against 8.94 for deep-fried and 7.43 for oven-fried. The differences were not statistically significant, so the fair takeaway is that no method clearly won, rather than that air fryers are worse. The same study found that soaking cut potatoes in water for 10 minutes before cooking lowered acrylamide. Two practical takeaways: soak cut potatoes, and cook to golden rather than dark brown.
Other side effects to know
- Fish: Cleveland Clinic notes air frying may increase cholesterol oxidation products in fish, compounds linked to heart disease. Lower temperatures and not overcooking help.
- High-heat compounds: any high-heat cooking forms polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and the same source says air frying forms fewer than deep frying.
- Fumes and new-appliance smell: a plastic-like smell on the first few uses is common. What comes off a hot appliance, and when to worry, is covered in our breakdown of air fryer fumes and off-gassing.
- The coating question: if you are asking whether the air fryer itself is toxic, that is a separate question from how healthy the food is. We cover it in our guide to the materials inside an air fryer.
Is an air fryer worth it?
That depends more on how you cook than on the machine. An air fryer is at its best making small, crisp meals quickly without heating the whole oven. If that sounds like most of your week, it will earn its spot on the counter.
Buy one if you
- cook for 1 to 4 people
- eat frozen foods, roast vegetables or wings often
- deep fry now and want to stop
- reheat leftovers most days
- want dinner without heating the kitchen in summer
Skip it if you
- regularly cook for 6 or more at once
- already use a convection or air-fry oven daily
- have almost no free counter
- want to avoid coated cooking surfaces entirely
- mostly cook soups, stews and pasta
If you do buy one, size matters more than brand, and the most common regret is buying too small. Here is how the best-selling models line up by household.

If you cook for one to three
Ninja AF101 4 Qt
A long-running favorite with one of the largest review counts of any air fryer on Amazon when we checked in September 2026. Ninja's listing describes the basket and crisper plate as aluminum with a nonstick ceramic coating, and both go in the dishwasher.
Worth knowing: 4 quarts means cooking in batches for four people, and it tops out at 400°F, while newer models such as the TurboBlaze reach 450°F.

Air fryer features that actually matter
Most spec sheets list a dozen presets. These are the features that change what you get out of it.
- Capacity for your household. The single most important feature. Use the table above, and when in doubt, size up.
- A named basket coating. "Nonstick" alone tells you nothing. Prefer listings that say what the coating is, then check what that claim covers.
- Temperature range. 400°F is enough for most food, and 450°F helps finish fries and wings. A low end near 100°F lets it dehydrate and proof dough.
- Auto shut-off and overheat protection. The basket should stop the heat when pulled out, and the unit should shut off at the end of the timer. Check the listing's safety features rather than assuming.
- Dishwasher-safe basket and plate. You will clean the basket after nearly every use. Hand-washing is gentler on coatings, but dishwasher-safe parts get cleaned more often.
- A shake reminder or window. Small, but it improves results because shaking halfway is the step people forget.
- A model number you can check against recalls. See the safety section for how.
The one that ticks most of the list
Cosori TurboBlaze 6 Qt (model CAF-DC601)
6 quarts, 90°F to 450°F, five fan speeds, automatic shut-off, and a basket and crisper tray Cosori describes as having a "PFAS-free, nonstick ceramic coating". It was the top-selling air fryer on Amazon when we checked in September 2026, and easy cleaning and quiet running come up again and again in owner reviews.
Worth knowing: Cosori's PFAS-free wording refers to the basket and crisper tray, and the listing does not go into what the ceramic coating is made of. Most reviews are too recent to show how the coating holds up over years. It is also a single basket, so a family still cooks mains and sides one after the other.

Best practices for cooking with an air fryer
Preheat for 3 to 5 minutes
Food that goes into a hot basket starts browning immediately. Some newer models do not need it, and your manual will say so.
Keep food in one loose layer
This one habit decides crisp or soggy. When food is piled up, the pieces on top block the air and everything underneath steams. Two small batches beat one crowded one.
Piled three deep: the top layer steams instead of crisping.
One loose layer: hot air reaches every side.
Use a little oil, the right way
Toss food in about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of a high smoke point oil such as avocado or canola. Several manufacturers' manuals advise against aerosol cooking sprays on the basket, because the propellants can build up on the coating. Too much oil pools in the drawer and can smoke.
Shake or flip halfway
Give small pieces a good shake, and turn larger ones with silicone-tipped tongs so you do not scratch the coating.
Convert oven recipes
A common rule of thumb, used by Prudent Reviews among others: lower the oven temperature by 25°F and cut the time by about 20%, then check a few minutes early.
Use liners carefully
Perforated parchment or a silicone liner makes cleanup easier, but a liner must never go in without food on it, or the fan can lift it into the heating element. Which liners are safe, and whether they change cooking results, is covered in our liner guide. If you go with silicone, check its temperature rating first: some air fryers reach 450°F, and our silicone safety guide explains what the ratings mean and which grades to trust. Thinking of foil instead? Here is what air fryer makers say about foil.
Air fryer safety: recalls and everyday habits
Several large air fryer recalls in recent years make it worth checking the model you own or are buying. Two of the largest recent recalls, as published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:
- Cosori, February 2023 (recall 23-130): about 2 million units in the U.S. The CPSC notice says "a wire connection in the air fryers can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards", with 205 reports of fire, burning, melting, overheating and smoking and 10 minor burn injuries. It covers models sold June 2018 to December 2022, including CP158-AF, CP137-AF, CS158-AF, CAF-P581 and CAF-P581S, CO137-AF, CO158-AF and CP258-AF, plus versions of those with extra letters after the model number. The TurboBlaze we recommend is model CAF-DC601, which is not on that list.
- Insignia (Best Buy), March 2024 (recall 24-159): about 187,400 air fryers and air fryer ovens in the U.S. The notice says the air fryers can overheat, causing handles to melt or break, and the air fryer ovens' glass doors can shatter. It lists 24 reports, including six fires, and no injuries.
To check yours, find the model number on the label under or behind the unit and search it on cpsc.gov. Everyday habits matter as much:
- Use it on a flat, heat-resistant counter with the clearance your manual lists around the vent, away from cabinets and curtains.
- Plug it straight into a wall outlet. Full-size models draw about 1,500 to 1,800 watts, which is too much for a light extension cord or a crowded power strip.
- Stay in the kitchen while it runs, especially at high temperatures.
- Do not put plastic containers or dishes that are not oven-safe in the basket.
- Unplug it and let it cool before cleaning.
How to clean an air fryer
- Unplug and let it cool completely.
- Take out the basket and crisper plate and soak them in hot, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes if anything is stuck.
- Wash with a soft sponge or brush. Skip steel wool and abrasive pads, which damage the coating.
- Wipe the inside of the housing with a damp cloth, and check the heating element above the basket for grease with the unit cool.
- Dry every part fully before putting it back.
Ten to fifteen minutes in hot soapy water loosens most baked-on grease.
For burnt-on grease, the heating element and the mistakes that ruin a basket, see our full cleaning walkthrough. If you are choosing between a basket model and an oven-style one, our air fryer toaster oven guide covers the larger format.
Frequently asked questions
Do air fryers use a lot of electricity?
They draw a lot of power while running, around 1,500 to 1,800 watts, but for short periods. Tests put most models at 1.4 to 1.7 kWh per hour of use, and a typical batch runs well under an hour, so for small meals they usually use less energy than heating a full oven.
Is air frying healthier than baking in the oven?
Not meaningfully, if you use the same amount of oil. Both are dry-heat methods. The large health gain is against deep frying, not against oven roasting.
Is an air fryer the same as a convection oven?
It works the same way, with a fan circulating hot air. An air fryer is smaller, with a stronger fan for its size and a perforated basket, so it heats faster and crisps more. Many ovens now have an air-fry setting that gets closer, though usually with a less intense result.
Do you need oil in an air fryer?
Not for foods that already contain fat, such as frozen fries, chicken wings or sausages. Fresh vegetables and breaded foods crisp better with a light coat, about a teaspoon to a tablespoon.
What should you not cook in an air fryer?
Wet batters, loose leafy greens, plain cheese, large roasts that will not fit with space around them, and anything in a container that is not oven-safe.
What size air fryer do I need?
About 2 quarts for one person, 4 quarts for one to three, 5 to 6 quarts for two to four, and 8 quarts or a two-basket model for families who want a main and a side at the same time.
The bottom line
An air fryer will not transform your health on its own, but for a lot of households it makes a quick home-cooked dinner easier on a busy weeknight. It heats fast, cleans up quickly, and makes leftovers worth eating again. Buy one sized for your household, keep the basket coating in good shape, and soak your potatoes. If you want one pick for a typical home of two to four, the Cosori TurboBlaze 6 Qt is where we would start.
