Best Cast Iron Griddle: 7 Uncoated Picks Matched to Your Stove

Rectangular cast iron griddle across two gas burners with pancakes cooking on the flat side

A cast iron griddle has no coating to wear out, and the same slab of iron that cooks Saturday pancakes can go on a grill or a campfire. Shape matters more than brand, though. A griddle that bridges two gas burners can be the wrong buy for a glass top.

Our quick pick

Lodge Double Play Reversible Grill/Griddle, 16.75 x 9.5 in

Amazon's #1 best seller in Griddles on October 23, 2026, with more than 27,000 ratings. Flat on one side, ridged on the other, sized to sit across two burners. Lodge says it is “Seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil” and made without PFAS.

The drawback: 9.35 lb, hand wash only, and it rusts if you put it away wet.

The Short Answer

For most kitchens, buy the Lodge Double Play: a reversible two-burner griddle with nothing on it but iron and baked-on vegetable oil. Cooking on one burner or a glass top? Get Lodge's round or square griddle, and lift it instead of sliding it.

How we put this together: we did not cook on these griddles. On October 23, 2026 we read Amazon's griddle best sellers and each pick's listing, Lodge's product pages and its PFAS statement, the product pages of the electric griddles we compare against, and stove makers' advice on cast iron. Cupindy is not affiliated with Lodge or any brand here.

Is a Cast Iron Griddle PFAS-Free?

Plain seasoned cast iron is PFAS-free, provided the seasoning oil is the only thing added to the iron. There is no nonstick layer. Food releases because of seasoning, which is oil heated until it bonds to the metal.

What Lodge says, and what it does not

Lodge's PFAS page says “Lodge Cast Iron has always been made without PFAS” and that its pans are “made with just iron and 100% natural vegetable oil” (Lodge). The griddle pages carry the same line: “Nontoxic cookware made without PFAS” on the Double Play, “Nontoxic and made without PFAS” on the Blacklock.

There are limits to that promise. Lodge says it relies on “vetted, third-party labs” to verify its cookware is free of PFAS and “dangerous levels of Lead and Cadmium”, but it names no lab and publishes no results. The “PFAS-Free” in its Amazon titles is the company's own wording, not a certification. We found nothing that contradicts it. We also found no public test report to show you.

PTFE, ceramic and “PFOA-free” on coated griddles

Coated griddles use one of two surfaces. Classic nonstick is PTFE, which is built from fully fluorinated carbon units, so it meets the OECD's 2021 PFAS definition (OECD). A “PFOA-free” label only tells you one processing chemical was not used. Our guide to what PFOA-free really means explains the gap between the labels.

The newer option is ceramic, a silica-based coating. Presto's 22-inch electric griddle page, for example, says “Ceramic nonstick surface provides stick-free cooking and easy cleaning. PFAS free.” (Presto). Either way, a coating wears out, and once it is gone the griddle is done. Worn seasoning comes back with oil and heat.

Best Cast Iron Griddles Compared

Sizes are overall, handles included, as each maker lists them; Hamilton Beach gives the cooking surface. Weights are from the makers' pages, except the round (retailer spec) and square (Amazon listing). Ratings were read on Amazon on October 23, 2026.

Cast Iron vs a Coated Electric Griddle

An electric griddle wins on convenience. It gives you one large, even surface with a thermostat, and it frees up the stove. Most best sellers are coated, though. The Chefman XL, Amazon's best-selling electric griddle on October 23, 2026, calls its surface nonstick in its listing, and we could not find a Chefman page that names the coating. Presto's 22-inch model is sold as ceramic.

Cast iron asks more of you. It is heavy, and it needs drying and a wipe of oil after every wash. In return nothing on it can flake off, it goes in the oven or on a grill, and you can use a metal spatula on it. Lodge says “any utensil is welcome — silicone, wooden, and even metal” (Lodge).

If you want electric anyway, Hamilton Beach makes one with a cast iron plate.

Hamilton Beach says “The grill surface is made of durable cast iron that is preseasoned to reduce sticking”, with a 10 x 16 inch cooking area that heats “from warm up to 450° F”. The cooktop lifts off the base for cleaning, and the page says it “works with metal utensils”. The page lists no coating, only preseasoning, and makes no PFAS statement either way. It is rated 4.6 stars by more than 400 Amazon buyers.

Good for: Pancakes and burgers on the counter when the stove is full

The drawback: It needs an outlet and a stretch of free counter, and only the drip tray is listed as dishwasher safe; the plate still needs hand washing and oil.

Which Cast Iron Griddle for Your Stove?

Gas

On gas, each burner under a two-burner griddle has its own knob, so you can run one end hotter for bacon and keep the other lower for eggs. Lodge rates the Double Play and Pro-Grid for “any stovetop (including induction), oven, grill, or campfire”. The Pro-Grid is the heavier of the two; read its cooking area below before you pick it over the Double Play.

Lodge Pro-Grid long reversible cast iron grill and griddle with handles at both ends

Heavier reversible for gas and grills

Lodge Pro-Grid Reversible Grill/Griddle, 20 x 10.5 in

Lodge's longest reversible, flat on one side and ridged on the other, with the same vegetable-oil seasoning and made-without-PFAS line as the Double Play. It has more than 16,000 ratings on Amazon.

Good for: Bridging two gas burners, and grills or campfires

The drawback: At 13.5 lb it is the heaviest pick, and Lodge's drawing puts the griddle itself at 16.56 x 7.93 inches without the handles, much less than the 20 x 10.5 in the name.

Electric coil

Coil burners heat a ring under the pan, so a griddle is hottest right above the coil and cooler at the ends. A single-burner round or square griddle avoids the cold-end problem. If you use a two-burner griddle on coils, preheat it longer on medium, and expect a cooler strip between the two burners.

Glass top

Stove makers disagree about glass tops. Whirlpool says cast iron “can be used on a ceramic glass-top stove without causing damage”, as long as you lift instead of slide (Whirlpool). Lodge says its cast iron is “safe for use on various heat sources, including glass-top stoves”, but adds “do not slide, and always remove from the stovetop after cooking.” A GE cooktop manual says cast iron is “not recommended” unless it is designed for glass cooktops, because it “Will scratch the cooktop surface” (GE). Our glass top cookware guide lists what each stove brand says.

The same GE manual covers GE's own griddle accessory over its linked burners and says to place and remove it only when it is cool and the burners are off. We found no stove maker guidance for a cast iron griddle across two separate glass burners. If your range has a bridge element, use that. If not, a single-burner round or square griddle is the safer choice. Skip Lodge's carbon steel griddle here; Lodge says it is “Not intended for smooth-top stoves”.

Induction

Cast iron is magnetic, so it works on induction. Lodge lists induction on its Double Play and Pro-Grid pages. Induction zones are round, though, so a long griddle heats where it touches a zone. A square griddle on one zone, or a griddle over a bridge zone, gives the most even result. Induction cooktops are glass too, so lift the griddle on and off rather than sliding it.

Single Burner or Double Burner?

Pick by how many people you feed and how your burners are laid out. A one-burner griddle heats evenly, is light enough to flip with one hand, and fits a glass top without straddling two zones. A two-burner griddle feeds a family in one round but needs two working burners under it.

Lodge round flat cast iron griddle with a skillet-style handle

Best single-burner griddle

Lodge Round Cast Iron Griddle, 10.5 in

A shallow, flat round with a skillet-style handle and an assist handle. It has more than 45,000 Amazon ratings, and its listing carries Lodge's “PFAS-Free” wording. The retailer spec puts it at 4 lb, light enough to tilt with one hand.

Good for: Eggs, tortillas, quesadillas and a few pancakes at a time

The drawback: A 10.5 inch circle holds about as much as a 10 inch skillet, so pancakes for four take several rounds.

Lodge square cast iron griddle with low sides and a teardrop handle

Square corners, more room

Lodge Square Cast Iron Griddle, 11 in

Square corners give you more flat surface than a round of the same width. Lodge's Amazon listing describes “low, spatula-friendly sidewalls” and a teardrop handle with an assist handle, and says “Made without PFOA or PTFE”.

Good for: Bacon, French toast and grilled cheese on one burner

The drawback: Low sides give hot fat little to stop it, so bacon spatters past the edge more than in a skillet, and at 5.9 lb it is heavier than the round griddle.

For two burners at less weight, the Blacklock line is cast thinner than Lodge's classic pans.

Lodge Blacklock lightweight double burner cast iron griddle

Lighter two-burner griddle

Lodge Blacklock Double Burner Griddle, 20.2 x 10 in

Lodge says it is “Cast in a thin, lightweight design” and “Triple seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil”. It weighs 7.86 lb, more than 5 lb less than the Pro-Grid, and Lodge says it “fits over two stovetop burners”.

Good for: Two-burner cooking if lifting a heavy griddle is the problem

The drawback: It is rated 4.0 stars on fewer than 100 Amazon ratings, far fewer than the classic Lodge griddles, and thinner iron stores less heat, so the surface cools more when cold food goes on.

Reversible Grill/Griddle or Flat Only?

A reversible griddle gives you a flat side for pancakes and eggs and a ridged side for grill marks on burgers and vegetables. The ridged side takes longer to scrub clean, and if you mainly want sear marks on steak, a dedicated grill pan with higher sides holds more grease. Our grill pan guide covers ridged pans.

Lodge Double Play reversible cast iron griddle, ridged side facing up

Best overall

Lodge Double Play Reversible Grill/Griddle, 16.75 x 9.5 in

Lodge's page lists 16.75 x 9.5 inches, 9.35 lb, “Made in the USA” and “Compatible with any stovetop (including induction), oven, grill, or campfire”. It was Amazon's #1 best seller in Griddles on October 23, 2026, with more than 27,000 ratings.

Good for: Pancakes on the flat side, burgers and vegetables on the ridged side

The drawback: It weighs 9.35 lb and Lodge's care line is “Hand wash, dry, oil.” Leave it wet in the rack and it will rust.

Lighter Than Cast Iron: Carbon Steel and Enameled Griddles

Carbon steel is iron with a little carbon, rolled thin instead of cast. It seasons the same way, has no coating, and heats up faster, which also means it cools faster when cold food hits it. Our carbon steel vs cast iron guide compares the two metals in detail.

Lighter, for gas and grills

Lodge Seasoned Carbon Steel Griddle, 18 x 10 in

The product page lists 8.13 lb, “Seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil” and “Nontoxic cookware made without PFAS”, and rates it for “any gas stove, oven, grill, or campfire”.

Good for: Gas burners, outdoor grills and camping where weight matters

The drawback: Lodge says it is “Not intended for smooth-top stoves”, and it holds 4.0 stars on Amazon, lower than the cast iron griddles here.

Enameled cast iron skips seasoning: the iron is covered in a glass-based enamel, which is a different thing from PTFE. Enamel can chip, though, and we kept this list to bare, seasoned metal. Our enameled cast iron guide covers what the enamel brands say about lead and cadmium.

Seasoning, Cleaning and Rust

Wiping a thin coat of oil onto a dry cast iron griddle after washing

Every pick arrives pre-seasoned, so you can cook on it the first day. Looking after it comes down to this:

  • Wash by hand. Lodge says “you can use mild dish soap to clean cast iron” (Lodge). Do not soak it.
  • Dry it right away, on a warm burner if you can, then rub in a thin film of oil.
  • Go easy on long, acidic simmers. Lodge says “large amounts of very acidic or alkaline foods can break down the seasoning when cooked for extended periods of time.”

Cast iron takes a metal turner, and a thin steel edge is the easiest way to scrape up stuck bits; the steel picks are in our spatula guide. For rust, sticky spots and re-seasoning, follow our cast iron cleaning guide.

So Which One Should You Buy?

  • Most kitchens, two burners: Lodge Double Play.
  • A big family breakfast on gas: Lodge Pro-Grid.
  • One burner or a glass top: Lodge round griddle, or the square one for bacon and sandwiches.
  • Lighter two-burner griddle: Lodge Blacklock.
  • Gas, grill or camping, lighter still: Lodge carbon steel.
  • You want electric without a coating: Hamilton Beach cast iron electric griddle.

For the bigger picture on pans, our non-toxic cookware guide covers the rest of the kitchen.

Questions People Ask

Is there such a thing as nonstick cast iron?

Cast iron has no nonstick coating. It releases food through seasoning, a layer of baked-on oil that Lodge says “forms a natural, easy-release cooking surface and helps prevent rust.” If the seasoning wears, oil and heat rebuild it.

Is a Lodge cast iron griddle PFAS-free?

Lodge says its cast iron “has always been made without PFAS” and is made of iron and vegetable oil. It says third-party labs check this but does not publish the results, so treat it as the maker's statement.

Is there a flat cast iron griddle?

Yes. Lodge's round and square griddles are flat on the cooking side, and the reversible models have one flat side and one ridged side.

What should you not do with a cast iron griddle?

Do not soak it, put it away wet or run it through the dishwasher. On a glass top, never slide it. Avoid long simmers of very acidic food, which Lodge says can break down the seasoning.

Do you put oil on a cast iron griddle?

Yes. Wipe on a thin layer before cooking and another after you wash and dry it. Lodge sums up its care as “Hand wash, dry, oil.”

Is carbon steel or cast iron better for a griddle?

Cast iron holds heat longer and works on more stoves; Lodge rates its classic cast iron for induction and glass tops. Carbon steel is lighter and heats faster, but Lodge says its carbon steel griddle is not intended for smooth-top stoves.

Can you use a cast iron griddle on a glass top stove?

Lodge and Whirlpool say yes if you lift it rather than slide it; some GE manuals say cast iron is not recommended. Check your stove's manual, and prefer a single-burner griddle if your range has no bridge element.

What is the difference between a griddle and a grill pan?

A griddle is flat, for pancakes, eggs and smash burgers. A grill pan has raised ridges for sear marks and lets fat drain away. Reversible griddles give you both in one piece.
