Carote sells some of the best-selling pans on Amazon. When we checked in late September 2026, its 8 and 10 inch granite skillets were ranked number one in Amazon's Skillets category, and one of its detachable-handle sets was number one in Cookware Sets. So "is Carote cookware safe?" is a question a lot of kitchens are asking, and most of the answers online are guesses.
We skipped the guessing. We read what Carote itself publishes: its official website, its Amazon listings, and the 704-page prospectus it filed when it listed its shares in Hong Kong in 2024. Then we checked what the coating maker, the FDA and state regulators say. We did not cook with these pans ourselves. Everything below is what the documents say, including where they go quiet.
The short answer
- Carote's "granite" pans are not stone. They are aluminum pans with a speckled nonstick coating. The granite is the look, not the material.
- Carote never calls its granite line PTFE-free. Those listings say "PFOA free" and "PFOS free". A page on Carote's own website reads, in full: "This product contains PTFE." Every PTFE-free or PFAS-free claim we found from Carote is on its ceramic line.
- Used the way Carote says, they are ordinary nonstick pans. Medium heat, never heated empty, wooden or silicone tools. The FDA says only negligible amounts of this kind of coating move into food.
- If you want to avoid PTFE, buy Carote's ceramic set, not the granite pans. Our pick is below.

The Carote set we would buy
CAROTE Ceramic Cookware Set, 14 pieces
Carote's ceramic line is the one it sells as PFAS-free, and this set has its own review history rather than one borrowed from a granite version (more on that below). Two frying pans, a saucepan, a sauté pan and a stockpot, all with lids.
See the ceramic set on AmazonWhat Carote cookware is actually made of
The "granite" is a speckle pattern in the coating. Underneath is aluminum.
Every Carote pan we looked at has the same basic build: a die-cast aluminum body, a nonstick coating sprayed on the inside, and a stainless steel plate on the base so it works on induction. What changes between ranges is the coating and the handle.
- The granite ranges (Classic Granite, the white and cream "granite" sets, most detachable-handle sets) use a dark or light nonstick coating flecked with speckles. Amazon's material field for these pans reads "Aluminum, Non Stick Granite". There is no stone in it.
- The ceramic ranges use a mineral-based ceramic nonstick coating. This is the line Carote sells as PFAS-free.
- Handles are either fixed Bakelite, a heat-resistant plastic, or a removable clip-on handle on the detachable sets.
Where does the coating come from? In a 2021 post on its own blog, Carote credited its granite pans' performance to "The Swiss ILAG 5 layers ILAG granite coating". ILAG is a Swiss company that makes nonstick coatings for cookware brands. Carote's 2024 prospectus is more general: "We directly source our cookware coatings from manufacturers in the PRC," it says, and the pans themselves are made by contract manufacturers (Business section, p. 205). The two statements do not have to conflict, since coating makers run factories in China, but no current Carote page names the coating on the pan you are buying.
For a wider look at speckled nonstick from every brand, see our guide to whether granite cookware is safe.
Does Carote contain PTFE or PFAS?
PTFE is the classic nonstick coating, best known as Teflon. It belongs to the PFAS family of "forever chemicals". PFOA is a different chemical that was once used to make PTFE. Under an EPA program, the eight major companies that made it committed to eliminating it by 2015. That is why almost every nonstick pan sold today can say "PFOA-free", and why that label on its own tells you very little. We explain it in full in what PFOA-free really means.
Here is what Carote says, source by source.
| Where | What it says |
|---|---|
| Carote's website, page titled "All you need to know about PTFE" | The whole page reads: "This product contains PTFE. For more information, please refer to:" Nothing follows, and no product is named. |
| Amazon listings for the granite pans and sets | "PFOA Free", "PFOS Free", "Non-Toxic". None of the nine granite listings we read says PTFE-free or PFAS-free. One skillet banner says "100% Healthy & Non-Toxic". |
| Amazon listings for the ceramic sets | "PFAS Free". Several, including the 25-piece set, add "Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Free". |
| Carote's website, Sakura ceramic set | "no PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead, or cadmium". It is the only product copy on Carote's own store that mentions PTFE at all. |
| Carote's website, page titled "Carote Cookware Chemicals Disclosure" | The page exists, but when we checked on September 29, 2026 it showed a title and nothing else: no chemical list and no links. |
| Carote's Hong Kong filings (2024 prospectus, 2024 annual report, 2025 interim report) | We searched the full text of all three. PTFE, PFAS and PFOA are not mentioned once. |
Put together, the pattern is clear. Carote says "PTFE-free" and "PFAS-free" about its ceramic pans, and says neither about its granite pans. Some reviews online describe Carote's coating as PTFE-free; on the granite line, Carote itself does not. The most direct statement on its website is the one that says a product contains PTFE.
Carote's own blog set the test years ago. A 2021 post on its website said granite cookware is "considered safe unless there are PFOA and PTFE on the cookwares," adding: "These are the same chemicals used in Teflon." By that yardstick, the question for any Carote granite pan is the PTFE one, and Carote has not answered it on the product.
A note on the empty disclosure page: California's cookware law, AB 1200, requires makers to list certain chemicals on the product's website. We are reporting what the page showed on the day we looked. It is not a finding about Carote's compliance with that law or any other.
If avoiding PTFE is your reason for reading this, the answer is Carote's ceramic line. This is the set we would pick from it.
Best Carote pick if you want to avoid PTFE
CAROTE Ceramic Cookware Set, 14 pieces
A 9.5 inch and an 11 inch frying pan, a 2 quart saucepan, a 3 quart sauté pan and a 5 quart stockpot, with lids, a ladle, a slotted spatula and four pan protectors. The listing's material field says "PFAS Free". Sold by Carote's own Amazon store and shipped by Amazon. It was Amazon's "Overall Pick" in its search results for Carote ceramic sets when we checked.
Main drawbackCarote says "Hand washing is highly recommended", and no oven temperature is given for this set. Like every ceramic nonstick, the coating wears with use, so treat it gently from day one.

Is PTFE actually a problem?
Not in the way many headlines suggest, as long as you respect the heat limit. The FDA's position is that nonstick coatings are bonded to the pan at very high temperatures, and that "studies show negligible amounts of PFAS in this coating can migrate to food." A PTFE pan used on normal heat is not the same thing as PFAS in drinking water.
The real line is temperature. ILAG, the coating maker Carote named in 2021, says on its website that PTFE pans "can be heated up to 230 °C in continuous use and up to 250 °C for short periods". That is about 446°F and 482°F. Carote's Amazon listings give the same ceiling: the 8 inch Classic Granite skillet lists a "Maximum Temperature" of 482°F, and two other granite pans list 250°C. An empty pan on a high burner can pass that in a few minutes, which is why Carote's care line on those listings reads "Avoid Dry Heating".
Carote's own care line: avoid dry heating. Add oil or food before the pan gets hot.
- Put oil or food in before the pan heats up. Never preheat a nonstick pan empty.
- Cook on low to medium. Carote says its pans heat up quickly, so high heat is rarely needed.
- Use the extractor fan whenever you sear, and do not leave an empty pan on a lit burner.
- Replace a pan when the coating chips or flakes. Carote's warranty treats scratches as normal wear; loose coating is not something to keep cooking on.
The legal picture is moving faster than the science. Since January 1, 2025, Minnesota has prohibited the sale of cookware with intentionally added PFAS, and its Pollution Control Agency says plainly: "As a PFAS, Teflon™ will be prohibited from use in cookware." In Minnesota law, PTFE is treated as a PFAS. That does not make a PTFE pan dangerous on your stove tonight. It does mean "non-toxic" on a PTFE pan is a marketing word, not a regulatory one.
Is Carote cookware dishwasher safe?
It depends on which Carote you own, and Carote does not give one answer. Here is what it says for each range.
Carote says "Hand Wash Only" on its fixed-handle pans. Its detachable sets are sold as dishwasher safe.
| Carote range | What Carote says | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Granite skillets and deep frying pans (fixed handle) | "Hand Wash Only" on the 10 inch skillet and the 12 inch deep pan | Hand wash |
| Fixed-handle granite sets (10 and 14 pieces) | "Recommend to hand wash the cookware" | Hand wash |
| Ceramic sets (fixed handle) | "Hand washing is highly recommended" | Hand wash |
| Detachable-handle sets (granite and ceramic) | "Dishwasher & Oven Safe" on Amazon; "fully dishwasher safe" on Carote's own store | Allowed, but hand washing keeps the coating longer |
Even the detachable sets are not a clean yes. The Kitchn's reviewer, who cooked with a 15-piece detachable Carote set for a month (review published January 2026), reports that "Carote advises against putting any part of this set in the dishwasher." Carote's own blog made the same point in 2021: "Avoid washing it in the dishwasher," because "the heat from the dishwasher with detergents will cause the cookware coating to degrade over time." ILAG, the coating maker, says the same about its granite-look coating: dishwasher cleaning is possible, "although this is not recommended due to the aggressive cleaning agents."
Our rule: fixed-handle Carote pans go in the sink, never the dishwasher. Detachable sets can go in when you are short of time, but hand washing is what keeps them nonstick. Carote's warranty on its own store excludes coating damage caused by "improper cleaning", so the dishwasher is a risk you carry, not Carote.
If a dishwasher and oven-friendly set is still what you want, this is the Carote best-seller built for it.
Best Carote set for the dishwasher and oven
CAROTE 21-Piece Detachable Handle Set, black
8 and 10 inch frying pans, 1.5 and 3 quart saucepans and a 4 quart sauté pan, with two clip-on handles, lids, storage lids, utensils and pan protectors. With the handles off, the pans stack, go in the oven and go on the table. It was Amazon's number one cookware set when we checked. A closely related set is also sold in green as a 19-piece version.
Main drawbackThis is a granite-line set: the listing says PFOA and PFOS free, not PTFE-free. And although it is sold as oven safe, Carote does not print an oven temperature on the listing.
See the 21-piece set on AmazonAs an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Can Carote pans go in the oven?
The detachable-handle sets can, with the handle clipped off. Carote says the removable handle is there for moving "from all kinds of stoves to the oven", and The Kitchn's reviewer reports the set she tested as "oven-safe to 480°F". The fixed-handle Classic Granite skillets are a different story: we found no oven-safe claim for them on any Carote listing or page, and their handles are Bakelite.
Two cautions. The 482°F "Maximum Temperature" on the skillet listings matches the coating maker's short-term PTFE limit. It reads as a limit for the pan and its coating, not an oven rating, so do not treat it as permission to bake. And no Carote lid we looked at is rated for the oven. The safe move is to go by the number printed on your own pan or box, and take the lid and handle off.
We compared what Carote, T-fal, SENSARTE and Granitestone each publish, handle and lid ratings included, in our full guide to oven-safe cookware.
How long does a Carote pan last?
Carote answered this one itself, in its prospectus. Under its research plans, the company wrote: "Our market research has indicated that customers perceive the limited lifespan–approximately one year–of non-stick pans as a major disadvantage compared to traditional iron cookware." Its stated goal is to "double the durability of these coatings" (Future Plans section, p. 426). The same filing says quality problems such as "blistering of the coating after use" happened "rarely" (Business section, p. 203).
Carote's own IPO filing: buyers see a nonstick pan's roughly one-year life as its main drawback.
That matches what hands-on reviewers see. The Kitchn's reviewer found "an easily scratched coating inside and out". So plan on a Carote pan as a light, cheap, easy pan that you will replace, not an heirloom. The warranty points the same way:
- 12 months from purchase, according to the Amazon listings.
- Carote's own-store warranty covers only orders placed on Carote's website. Amazon purchases follow the Amazon seller's policy.
- Not covered: overheating or heating an empty pan, metal or sharp utensils, abrasive cleaners, and coating wear "caused by misuse, overheating, improper cleaning".
To get the most from any Carote pan: medium heat, a little oil, wooden or silicone tools, hand washing with a soft sponge, and the felt pan protectors between pans when you stack them. Our guide to cleaning nonstick pans without ruining them covers stuck-on food and stains.
If you accept that trade, and just want the pan everyone is buying, this is it.
The Carote best-seller, if you accept a PTFE-type coating
CAROTE 10-Inch Classic Granite Frying Pan
The pan most people mean when they say "Carote": light, sold as quick to heat and easy to clean, and it works on induction. It was number one in Amazon's Skillets category when we checked, and it costs little enough that replacing it after a year or two will not sting. Also sold as an 8 inch pan.
Main drawback"Hand Wash Only", no oven claim for the fixed Bakelite handle, and the listing says PFOA-free, not PTFE-free.

What we could not verify
- Which products the PTFE page covers. It says "This product contains PTFE" without naming one.
- The full chemical list for any Carote pan. The disclosure page was empty when we checked.
- Which coating is on the granite pans today. Carote named ILAG in 2021; its 2024 filing says only that coatings come from manufacturers in China.
- An oven temperature from Carote itself. We found none on Carote's pages or listings; the 480°F figure comes from a reviewer's set.
- Lawsuits. We searched for class actions naming Carote and found none. That is not proof there are none.
What Carote told us
We emailed Carote's customer care team on September 29, 2026 with these questions: which products the PTFE page covers, where the chemical list is, what the ceramic coating is, the oven limits for the fixed-handle pans and the detachable sets, what the 482°F figure refers to, and its dishwasher advice. We will add Carote's answers here when it replies.
So should you buy Carote?
Carote makes light, inexpensive pans that are pleasant to cook with while they are new. Whether it is the right buy depends on what you want to avoid.
If you want the best-seller and will look after it
Buy the 10 inch Classic Granite skillet, or the 21-piece detachable set if you want a full kitchen that stacks and goes in the oven. Keep the heat moderate, and expect to replace pans as the coating wears.
If you want to avoid PTFE
Buy from Carote's ceramic line, and check the listing's material field says "PFAS Free" before you order. Our pick is the 14-piece ceramic set. Ceramic coatings wear too, so the care rules above still apply.
If you want no coating at all
Then no Carote pan fits. Cast iron and stainless steel have nothing to wear off. Start with our guides to cast iron cookware and stainless steel grades, or our shortlist of PFAS-free cookware.
Why the star ratings on a Carote ceramic set can mislead
On Amazon, Carote groups many sets under one listing family, and the family shares one rating score and one review count. When we checked, a 21-piece ceramic set showed exactly the same review count and the same sales rank as a 21-piece granite set, and a 19-piece ceramic detachable set shared its reviews with a granite detachable set. So the stars you see on a Carote ceramic listing may mostly come from buyers of the granite version. Before you trust the rating, open the reviews and check which version each one is about. As far as we could see, the 14-piece ceramic set we recommend has its own review count and its own rank.
Here is how the four Carote products we link compare on the claims that matter.

Questions people ask
Is Carote cookware non-toxic?
"Non-toxic" has no legal definition on cookware. Carote's ceramic pans are sold as PFAS-free. Its granite pans are sold as PFOA-free and PFOS-free, never as PTFE-free, and a page on Carote's own website says "This product contains PTFE." Used on low to medium heat, the FDA says only negligible amounts of nonstick coating migrate to food.
Does Carote contain PTFE?
Carote does not say which products contain it. Its website has a page that reads "This product contains PTFE", and its granite listings never claim to be PTFE-free, while its ceramic listings do. If you want to be sure a Carote pan has no PTFE, buy from the ceramic line.
What is Carote cookware made of?
A die-cast aluminum body, a nonstick coating on the inside (speckled "granite" or ceramic, depending on the range), a stainless steel base plate for induction, and Bakelite or detachable handles.
Is Carote real granite?
No. "Granite" describes the speckled look of the nonstick coating. There is no stone in the pan.
Where is Carote cookware made?
Carote is a cookware company based in China; its shares have been listed in Hong Kong since 2024. Its prospectus says it outsources production to contract manufacturers and buys its coatings from manufacturers in China.
Is Carote a good brand?
For light, inexpensive, easy-release pans, it is one of the most popular on Amazon. The trade-off is lifespan: Carote's own market research says buyers see about a year of life from a nonstick pan as the main drawback, and reviewers find the coating scratches easily.
Does Carote work on induction?
Yes. The pans we checked have a magnetic stainless steel plate on the base, and Carote lists them as compatible with all stovetops, induction included.
