Short answer: empty the drum and run your washer's cleaning cycle (Clean Washer, Tub Clean or Self Clean). Use one cleaner tablet or about 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach, not both. Then wipe the door gasket, rinse the detergent drawer, clear the drain pump filter on a front-loader, and leave the door open to dry. Most makers say once a month. None of the cleaners below uses chlorine bleach, and three of them are on EPA's Safer Choice list.

Our quick pick
affresh Washing Machine Cleaner, 6 tablets
Whirlpool and Maytag build their Clean Washer cycle around this tablet, and it's on EPA's Safer Choice list. Use one a month in the empty drum, never in the dispenser.
See affresh on AmazonThe drawback: it is lightly scented (fragrance under 1 percent on its safety data sheet). If you want no scent at all, the Seventh Generation pick below is fragrance free.
How we put this together: on October 21 and 22, 2026, we read the manuals and support pages of six washer makers, the safety data sheets of the cleaners and EPA's Safer Choice list. We did not test these products in our own washers. Cupindy is not affiliated with these brands.

Clean Washer, Tub Clean or Self Clean: What Each Maker Says
Each brand names the cycle differently and wants different things in it. Where a maker's manual and support page disagree, we show both. Your model's manual wins.
| Maker | Cycle name | How often | Bleach | Cleaner tablets | Vinegar |

Whirlpool, Maytag front-load guide · top-load guide |
Clean Washer with affresh | Monthly or every 30 cycles | Yes. Front-loader: to the MAX line in the bleach and softener compartments. HE top-loader: 1 cup in the bleach compartment | Yes: affresh in the drum, never the dispenser | Manuals silent. Whirlpool and Maytag blogs: not in the drum |
|
LG front-load manual · top-load manual |
Tub Clean | Monthly, or when tcL shows | Yes in the manuals (no more than 1 cup). One LG support page says avoid chlorine cleaners | Yes, straight into the drum | Not for Tub Clean. Never mixed with bleach |
|
Samsung front-load manual · top-load manual |
Self Clean+ (front), Self Clean (top) | Monthly, or every 40 cycles (front) or 20 (top) | Only if there is residue or a mold smell | Manuals: add nothing during Self Clean | Manuals: none. Support page: up to 6 cups on Sanitize |
|
GE front-load manual · Profile top-load |
Self Clean (front). Top-load: Bulky in the Profile manual, Basket Clean on GE support | Monthly, or about every 40 cycles (front) | Yes, 1 cup straight into the basket | Tide Washing Machine Cleaner named | Manuals silent. Support pages: 1 cup |
|
Electrolux, Frigidaire Electrolux front-load · Frigidaire top-load |
Clean Washer or Tub Clean | Monthly | Yes, 1 cup. Front-loader: main wash detergent chamber. Top-loader: empty tub | Tide pouch named, not with bleach | Never with bleach |
|
Speed Queen front-load guide · top-load guide |
Tub Clean (front-load). TC5 top-load: no cycle | As needed | Yes, bleach compartment and washtub | Yes, straight into the washtub | Allowed in the front-load guide |
The biggest split is Samsung. Its front-load manual says “Do not use or mix any other detergent or chemicals during the Self Clean+ cycle” (the top-load manual says the same for Self Clean), and both add bleach only when there is residue. Its top-load manual puts that bleach in the bleach compartment. Its US support page says the detergent compartment, and “Do NOT use the bleach compartment” (Samsung support). Whirlpool builds its cycle around a tablet.

The cleaner GE, Electrolux and Frigidaire name
Tide Washing Machine Cleaner with Oxi
GE's front-load manual names “Tide® Washing Machine Cleaner” as an option. Electrolux and Frigidaire say one pouch “OR” 1 cup of bleach, and “DO NOT use both” (Electrolux guide). The Amazon listing says “Made by Nehemiah Manufacturing. Certain trademarks used under license from The P&G Company or its affiliates”.
Good for: GE, Electrolux and Frigidaire owners who want to follow the manual to the letter
The drawback: it's scented and dyed. The Amazon ingredient line lists fragrance and Pigment Blue 15, and it isn't on the Safer Choice list.
See Tide Washing Machine Cleaner on AmazonHow to Clean a Front-Load Washer, Step by Step
Run the cleaning cycle first. Do the gasket, drawer and drain filter once it ends.
- Empty the drum and check the gasket fold. LG asks you to remove anything caught “in the groove inside the door gasket at the six o'clock position” (LG). Socks and coins end up there.
- Add one cleaning agent, not two. A tablet goes straight into the drum; liquid bleach goes where your manual says (table above). On a Samsung, add nothing unless there is residue or a mold smell.
- Start the cycle and let it finish. Whirlpool and GE both say not to interrupt it. GE's front-load Self Clean runs about 90 minutes, and GE suggests a Rinse & Spin or a light-colored load afterward.
- Wipe the door gasket. Pull back the folds, wipe inside them and dry them. Full method below.
- Rinse the detergent drawer. Pull it out and rinse it. LG says “Use water only when cleaning the drawer and inserts”; Whirlpool says the dispensers are not dishwasher safe (Whirlpool).
- Clear the drain pump filter if your washer has one (most front-loaders). Steps below.
- Leave the door and drawer open. “Always leave the washer door slightly ajar between uses to help dry out the washer” (Whirlpool).

How to Clean a Top-Load Washer
If your top-loader has a cleaning cycle
- Empty the tub. Samsung adds one step: run a Spin Only cycle first to remove any water left in the tub (Samsung top-load manual).
- Add what your manual names: one tablet in the empty tub, or 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach where the manual says (see the maker table).
- Run the cleaning cycle (its name is in the maker table).
- Rinse if bleach was used. Frigidaire says to “Immediately follow up with a Rinse & Spin cycle” (Frigidaire).
- Wipe the lid and lid seal, then leave the lid open. LG asks you to wipe “the inside of the lid seal to remove any moisture”.
If it has no cleaning cycle
Speed Queen's TC5 guide has a monthly job instead: “Clean upper 2-3 inches of wash tub” with “an all-purpose cleaner or a steel wool soap pad” (Speed Queen top-load guide). GE's agitator top-load manual says to clean the basket with a soft cloth dampened with liquid detergent, then rinse (GE). Neither manual mentions running bleach or vinegar through an empty tub.
HE washers: the Whirlpool, LG, Samsung and GE manuals all say HE detergent only, and no more than the dose on the bottle. Whirlpool also asks for “warm or hot water washes sometimes (not exclusively cold water washes)”.
How to Clean a Front-Load Washer Gasket (and Get Mold Off It)
Wipe inside the folds with warm water and a mild detergent. For mold, use a dilute bleach solution: 3/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of warm water. Whirlpool, LG and Samsung give that same ratio in their front-load manuals. Wear rubber gloves, and dry the folds when you're done.
- Pull back the lip of the gasket and look all the way around. LG says to “Pull the lip of the gasket back and clean under that as well” (LG).
- For routine cleaning, use warm water with a mild detergent. Whirlpool's support page suggests “Use a toothbrush to scrub away the dirt, paying close attention to the crevices of the seal” (Whirlpool).
- For black spots, use the dilute bleach mix above and let it stand 5 minutes (Whirlpool). Never use straight bleach: LG warns it “can cause the gasket to deteriorate over time”.
- Clear the small drain holes in the gasket. Speed Queen suggests a paper clip; GE says make sure nothing is blocking the holes behind the gasket.
- Dry the folds with a towel and leave the door open.
Skipping bleach? LG's support page allows vinegar on the gasket instead, just not both together. GE says you may wipe it with “mild detergent, diluted bleach or diluted vinegar” (GE).

For the folds and drawer slots
OXO Good Grips Deep Clean Brush Set
A large brush and a small brush with a wiper blade, nylon bristles. The small one reaches into gasket folds and the slots of a detergent drawer. Keep it to soft bristles: LG says “Do not use steel wool or abrasive cleaners”.
Good for: Black spots in the gasket fold and crusted detergent in the drawer
The drawback: it is a general household brush, not a washer tool. Whirlpool only asks for a toothbrush, so if you have an old one, you may not need this.
See the OXO brush set on AmazonMold in the gasket comes back if the gasket stays wet. Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Electrolux and Speed Queen all tell you to leave the door open after washing. Electrolux and Frigidaire add one caution: not when small children or pets are around.

Keeps the door open for you
eHuangTools Magnetic Washer Door Prop
A magnetic base and a bendable hose that hold a front-load door partly open, so the gasket can dry between loads.
Good for: Front-loaders in a hallway or small laundry room where a wide-open door gets in the way
The drawback: it only works on a washer with a magnetic metal frame. The listing says it isn't for stainless steel or plastic washers. And an open door is still an open door around small children and pets.
See the magnetic door prop on AmazonHow to Clean the Drain Pump Filter
Most front-loaders have a small door at the bottom front. Put a shallow pan and towels underneath and drain the water through the little hose. Then twist the filter out counterclockwise, rinse it and screw it back in. Top-loaders usually have no pump filter; Samsung says so outright (Samsung).
- Let hot water cool. Samsung says to wait an hour after a hot or Self Clean cycle, because the water inside “will be very hot”. Unplug the washer (LG).
- Open the access door. GE says to use a small flathead screwdriver or a coin. LG's is on the bottom left corner.
- Drain first. Pull out the small drain hose or pour spout and let the water run into a shallow pan. GE notes “It is normal to catch about a cup of water when the filter is removed”.
- Unscrew the filter slowly counterclockwise, controlling the flow of water.
- Clean it. Pick out lint, hair, coins and pins, and rinse the filter under the tap. LG says not to put it in the dishwasher.
- Screw it back in clockwise until it is snug. Electrolux says check that the O-ring is in place and “DO NOT overtighten”.
A washer that drains slowly or shows a drain error (Samsung shows 5C) needs this now. Otherwise, see How Often below.

If water backs up somewhere other than the washer, the clog may be in the house drain line rather than the machine. Our guide to natural drain cleaning covers what you can try before calling a plumber.
Why Does My Washing Machine Smell?
Usually it's residue plus moisture. Detergent, fabric softener and lint build up where you can't see them. Then the door stays shut and the damp drum grows mildew. A cleaning cycle, a gasket wipe and a dry drum fix it.
| The smell | Likely cause (maker source) | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Musty or mildew | Residue left in the drum. LG runs Tub Clean monthly “to remove detergent buildup and other residue” | Clean the gasket, run the cleaning cycle, leave the door open. If the smell is already there, LG says run Tub Clean once a week for three weeks |
| Sour or stale | Detergent buildup. Samsung: not using HE detergent causes excessive buildup | Cut the dose to the line on the cap, use HE detergent, and run a warm or hot wash now and then (Whirlpool) |
| Strong mold smell | Samsung reserves bleach for this case: “we do recommend using bleach if you already have an existing mold smell” | Bleach in a cleaning cycle (where your manual says), then the gasket bleach wipe |
| Sewage or rotten egg | Not covered in the manuals we read | Front-loader: clear the pump filter first. Top-loader (no filter): have the drain hose and house drain line checked if a cleaning cycle does not fix it |
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

One affresh tablet on the cleaning cycle (or a normal hot cycle) is the simplest fix for a smelly drum. Want no scent at all? The Seventh Generation cleaner is fragrance free.
See affresh on AmazonLeftover detergent in the drawer feeds the smell too. Samsung says “Using too much detergent can gunk up the detergent drawer” (Samsung). Our guide to non-toxic laundry detergent covers which detergents rinse clean.
Using Bleach to Clean a Washer (and Never With Vinegar)
Liquid chlorine bleach is the cleaning agent most manuals list, usually 1 cup on the cleaning cycle. For severe odor, mold or residue buildup, Electrolux goes further: “Pour eight (8) cups of bleach into the main wash detergent compartment” (Electrolux). Whirlpool warns that more than the amount it gives “could cause washer damage over time”, and its front-load guide says not to use thickened, easy-pour or no-splash bleach because of excess suds.
Never mix bleach with vinegar, citric acid or ammonia. Washington State's Department of Health: “When chlorine bleach is mixed with an acid, chlorine gas is given off”, and it lists vinegar among the acids (WA DOH). Speed Queen's manual says “Mixing bleach and vinegar creates toxic chlorine gas”. Use one agent per cycle, and rinse the bleach compartment before anything else goes in it.
How to disinfect a washing machine
The makers' way: a bleach cleaning cycle at your manual's dose, then a rinse. On a front-loader, add the 3/4 cup per gallon bleach wipe on the gasket. Samsung also has a Sanitize cycle; its support page says bleach or white vinegar can go into the tub on it (Samsung). Do not leave bleach sitting in the drum: Samsung warns that left too long, it can cause rust.
Can You Clean a Washing Machine With Vinegar and Baking Soda?
Makers disagree. Speed Queen and GE allow white vinegar. Whirlpool and Maytag say not in the drum, because “vinegar's acidity can cause damage to washing machine components, particularly rubber seals and hoses” (Whirlpool). Whirlpool also sells affresh, so weigh that.
| Washer | Speed Queen's routine (its blog) | Who says no |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load | 2 cups white vinegar in the detergent dispenser (Speed Queen) | Whirlpool, Maytag (Maytag) |
| Top-load | 4 cups white vinegar straight into the drum. Once it fills and starts, pause it for an hour, then let it finish. Second cycle: 1/2 cup baking soda in the drum | Whirlpool, Maytag |
Speed Queen's blog says not to put vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle, because “they'll react and cancel each other out”. Samsung's support page allows up to 6 cups of distilled white vinegar on Sanitize; its manuals do not mention it for cleaning.
Hard water instead of odor? White, chalky film is mineral scale, and LG's top-load manual says “Use a descaler to remove visible mineral buildup on the washer tub” (LG). Citric acid is the usual descaler.
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
For mineral buildup
Lemi Shine Washing Machine Cleaner plus Machine Wipes
Mostly citric acid (85 to 95 percent on its safety data sheet) with a little washing soda. Machine wipes are included. It's Safer Choice listed.
Good for: Homes with hard water and chalky film in the drum or drawer
The drawback: it's an acid. Samsung's manual says “Do not use a strong acidic cleaning agent”, and an LG support page says to avoid acidic washer cleaners. So it may not suit those two brands. It also contains fragrance (Lemi Shine).
See Lemi Shine on AmazonWasher Cleaning Methods Compared
| Method | What the makers say | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaner tablet (oxygen bleach) | Whirlpool, LG, Speed Queen: straight into the drum. Samsung manuals: nothing during Self Clean | Never in the detergent drawer |
| Liquid chlorine bleach | Listed by every maker we read (Samsung: only for residue or mold) | Where it goes differs by model. Never with vinegar, acids or ammonia |
| White vinegar | Speed Queen and GE allow it; Whirlpool and Maytag say not in the drum | Rubber seals and hoses (Whirlpool); never with bleach |
| Citric acid, CLR and other acid descalers | Not named in the manuals we read. Samsung says no strong acids | An acid: never with bleach |
| Baking soda | Speed Queen's blog: second cycle after vinegar. Maytag calls it safe “in most washing machines” (Maytag) | Not in the same cycle as vinegar |
| Hydrogen peroxide | Speed Queen's blog, for the door seal only | Not a drum method in any manual we read |
| Borax | No manual we read names it for the drum | Stick to a tablet or bleach for the cycle |
Non-Toxic Washing Machine Cleaners: What Is Actually Inside
Most washer cleaners share a base: sodium percarbonate (an oxygen bleach that releases hydrogen peroxide in water) and sodium carbonate (washing soda). The differences are in what else goes in: fragrance, dye, enzymes, or an acid instead. None of these five uses chlorine bleach. affresh, Seventh Generation and Lemi Shine are on EPA's Safer Choice list; Seventh Generation is the one with no fragrance and the one with enzymes. Septic claims are in the FAQ.
| Cleaner | Main ingredients (maker documents) | Fragrance or dye | Safety sheet | Safer Choice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| affresh SDS 2025 |
Sodium percarbonate, sodium carbonate, glucono-delta-lactone, polyethylene glycol, sodium acetate | Fragrance under 1% | Warning: harmful if swallowed, eye irritation | Yes |
| Seventh Generation SDS 2025 |
Sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium percarbonate, enzymes, PVA film | None | Warning: serious eye irritation | Yes |
| Lemi Shine SDS 2025 |
Citric acid 85-95%, sodium carbonate | Fragrance (maker page) | Warning: skin, eye and breathing irritation | Yes |
| OxiClean ingredients · SDS |
Sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, surfactants, salt, acrylic polymer | Fragrance and a blue pigment | Danger: serious eye damage | No |
| Tide maker page · SDS 2021 |
Surfactants, oxygen bleach (percarbonate), sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate; TAED on the Amazon list | Perfume; Pigment Blue 15 on the Amazon list | Warning: serious eye irritation | No |
OxiClean's own ingredient disclosure lists hexamethylindanopyran (galaxolide) and butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial) among its fragrance parts. It flags lilial under “EU CMRs”, the EU list of substances classed as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (Church & Dwight). All five safety sheets carry an eye warning, so store these out of children's reach. OxiClean's says to keep rinsing an exposed eye for at least 60 minutes.

The fragrance-free pick
Seventh Generation Washing Machine Cleaner, Fragrance Free, 6 packs
Seventh Generation's safety data sheet says the company “discloses all intentionally added ingredients”, and its odor line reads “Unfragranced” (SDS, January 2025). Seventh Generation lists washing soda, oxygen bleach and two enzyme blends as its cleaning agents, and it's Safer Choice listed.
Good for: Fragrance-free homes and anyone who wants the full ingredient list
The drawback: the packs are a dissolving film, so keep them dry. Seventh Generation's product page warns “DO NOT handle pack with wet hands” (Seventh Generation).
See Seventh Generation on AmazonA widely sold oxygen cleaner
OxiClean Washing Machine Cleaner with Odor Blasters, 4 pouches
Washing soda and oxygen bleach in a pouch. The listing says to pour one pouch into the empty drum, run hot water, and wipe any leftover residue with a towel after the cycle.
Good for: Anyone who wants a common supermarket brand and doesn't mind fragrance
The drawback: it's the only cleaner here with a Danger label on its safety data sheet (“Causes serious eye damage”). It's also scented and colored, and not Safer Choice listed.
See OxiClean on AmazonHow Often Should You Clean Your Washing Machine?
Once a month for most washers, or when the reminder light or code comes on (LG shows tcL). Samsung counts cycles: every 40 on front-loaders, 20 on top-loaders. Speed Queen says as needed.
The rest runs on its own clock: the detergent drawer weekly (LG) or once or twice a month (GE, Electrolux), the gasket monthly (LG). For the pump filter, Samsung's manual says every 2 months, Samsung's support page monthly or about every 40 washes, and Maytag “every few months or as needed” (Maytag).
Do Washing Machine Cleaners Work (and What to Use Without affresh)
Yes, for residue and odor. They're just not the only way. A cleaner tablet is oxygen bleach plus washing soda in a measured dose. Most manuals accept 1 cup of chlorine bleach instead, and GE says “It is not required that you use a washing machine cleaner” (GE). Whirlpool's own blog says “If you don't have affresh® tablets you may be able to use liquid chlorine bleach, but check your use and care guide first” (Whirlpool), and LG asks for any “oxygen-based washing machine cleaner”. A tablet won't clean the gasket folds or the pump filter. You still do those by hand.
Washing Machine Cleaning FAQ
Is affresh, Tide or OxiClean better for cleaning a washing machine?
All three are oxygen-bleach cleaners. affresh is on EPA's Safer Choice list and lightly scented; Tide and OxiClean are scented, colored and not on the list, and OxiClean's safety sheet carries the Danger label. If your manual names one, use that one: Whirlpool and Maytag name affresh; GE, Electrolux and Frigidaire name Tide. We did not review Uproot Clean.
Can I use Dawn or dish soap to clean my washer?
Whirlpool says no: “It is not recommended to use dish soap to clean your washing machine.” (Whirlpool). The HE manuals we read ask for low-sudsing HE detergent only.
Is bleach or vinegar better for mold in a washer?
The manuals use bleach: 3/4 cup in 1 gallon of warm water for a moldy front-load gasket (Whirlpool, LG, Samsung). LG's support page allows vinegar on the gasket instead.
Do all front-load washers get moldy?
Any front-loader can if the door stays shut and the gasket stays wet. So every maker we read says to keep the door open and dry the gasket.
Is cleaning vinegar the same as white vinegar?
Not always. Cleaning vinegar is sold for cleaning, not food, so check the acidity on the label. No manual we read asks for it in the drum; Frigidaire mentions it only as a fabric softener substitute.
What is the best washing machine cleaner for pet hair and odor?
Clear the pump filter first, since hair collects there, then run a cleaning cycle. The affresh listing says it removes residues that can trap pet odors.
Are washing machine cleaners septic safe?
affresh, Seventh Generation, OxiClean and Tide say so on their listings. Ask your septic installer about chlorine bleach.
Clean the dryer while you're at it. Our guide to cleaning a dryer vent covers the lint trap and vent. wool dryer balls vs dryer sheets compares what goes in with the clothes. For the dishwasher, see how to clean a dishwasher.
